I'm just wondering what you guys do. Do you eat in the main dining room every night? I'm trying to figure out how many pairs of slacks to pack for my husband. Thanks, Julie

I always have, but I've never sailed on a ship that has a specialty (extra $$) restaruant and the buffet doesn't appeal to me for dinner. I like the whole get dressed up, even a little if not formal nights, and getting to know our tablemates.

On the last cruise, yes. On the one prior, only five of seven nights (was in port in Cozumel for one, ate at the lido buffet for the other). On all cruises prior to that, there was no such thing as "alternative dining" so the only option was the dining room (yes, I am OLD).

We generally have always eaten in the dining room with the exception of this last cruise when the food just didn't seem to be that great and I didn't care for our waiter at all. We went to the buffet one night...eww... it was awful. Should've just stayed in our cabin and ordered the nummy sandwiches from room service.

That is really a tough question to answer without more information. Which ship are you sailing on, how long are you cruising, etc.
We eat in the dining room most nights. My husband on a 7 night cruise will take 4 pair of dockers, 1 suit and his tux. Some pants he can mix with other shirts if he changes after dinner.
Keep in mind, if your ship is in port at night, you may eat in port or choose to go back to the ship and eat. You have to take several things into consideration when packing.

I've only cruised once, so far. That was on the Conquest last summer. Not being much for "formal" anything, I was skeptical about eating in the dining room. Turned out to be one of my favorite things that I looked forward to every day. Wore Dockers except on the two formal nights, wore a dark suit then. Noticed several men still dressed "business casual" even on the formal nights, but I actually LIKED dressing up for dinner. I made a pair of Dockers last a couple of nights at least. Didn't do much onboard at night to get them dirty.

We like to eat at the buffet since we don't have to change to go to dinner. I really wish they would post in the Capers what the main dishes are in the dining room and on the buffet so you could decide without having to actually go and check it out! I hate having to change and then going to the dining room to find out they have nothing that really excites me!!!

I have a feeling we'll be eating there all but two nights. One night we'll be in Cozumel until midnight, so probably end up eating somewhere there, and we may opt for something else while on board another night. We'll just play it by ear.
On previous cruises, I've always eaten in the dining room exclusively, though.

On the Elation there aren't any specialty restaurants and we didn't like the buffet at Tiffany's very much. We really enjoyed the 24-hour pizza, and the grill was pretty good but wasn't open very long. You could go to the restaurant early in the day and see the menu posted outside to see what you want for lunch and dinner.

ALWAYS! I have never had a meal at the buffet on Lido Deck. Just me - I love being pampered PLUS having gourmet food, so the dining room's for me - all three meals! (Hey, I was a Food & Beverage director and caterer for too many year - Let somebody wait on me for a change!) http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
Besides, I truly enjoy Carnival's food and presentation, and I like having the many different courses - very relaxing with a little vino. The atmosphere's not quite the same on Lido Deck. (I've passed through there, so no thank you.)

On our last cruise, we ate in the dining room 3 out of 8 nights. We do not cruise for the food. I dont like to sit through a long meal. I like to grab a quick bite up on the Lido. We did do the 2 formal nights. We do love to dress up.

On the Triumph in March, I did not eat in the dining room once during the entire cruise. We either ate upstairs(not good food at all) or grabbed something ashore if we had time. I just did not feel like being on a time schedule at all. I really wish that Carnival could convert one dining room to a Freestyle or Anytime Dining like NCL and Princess.

Unless I am too sick to get dressed for dinner, I'm with Cotton. At sea days, all 3 meals in the dining room. At port days, at least dinner. Luckily, we haven't had a really bad dining team yet.
We figure that we can eat buffet meals at home and when visiting Vegas. We associate cruising with the complete dining experience. You are pampered and there is new menu selections for every lunch and dinner. If you get friendly wait team, it is like going to a favorite restaurant where the staff is attentive and know your preferences. On our cruise two weeks ago, our Conquest dining staff of Ari and Ni had one diet coke drink on the table already, no wine glasses, no knives set where my son sits, and brings hot bread as soon as we sit down. Now that is service! Also, you get to try new foods without guilt or feeling that you got ripped off. My 4 year old eats every meal with us, and he is not allowed to order from the kiddy menu. If we are paying for him as a 3rd person on this trip, he can have chicken Mcnuggets and fries somewhere else!! Actually, he really likes the formal dining experience and is quite adventurous.

I just LOVE eating in the dining room. Every night for us unless there is specialty dining. I agree that we can do a buffet here at home any time, and with 3 kids, we don't often take in the more "fine" dining establishments. Maybe that is why even our kids have liked the dining room experience while onboard(especially on CCL, where the wait staff are entertaining!). On 7 night cruise, DH takes 1 suit for formal nites and 3 pairs of Dockers for the more resort casual nites (but could maybe get by with 2 since he changes out of them after dinner).

We pack as though we will eat in the dining room every night although we usually don't make it that often. Our last cruise was an 8 nighter so my DH packed his suit for two nights, 3 pairs of nice slacks to be worn twice each (covering the other 6 nights)and various shirts to match. We ended up in the specialty restaurant once, the Lido buffet area once or twice, and the dining room the other nights, including both formal nights. We've never had breakfast or lunch in the dining room although I would like to give it a try sometime.

On a four night cruise, we eat in the dining room every night...and wish there were more, as it's fabulous! My SO wears a tux or dark suir on formal night, wears a pair of dockers or khakis and brings another..I wear a gown for formal night, then wear capris for travel and first night dinner, pack another pair as well as a great black skirt to wear (TWICE)with different tops for casual nights. Find I can wear the same black strappy sandals for all dinners, including formals...tho I'm looking for some great silver sandals to add in for formal night. http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

We eat every night in the dining room. Love the atmosphere, the food, the service, etc, etc. We rarely eat out at home, so this is IT for us.
Bruce usually brings three pair of slacks. One pair goes with his dress jacket and the other 2 pair are Dockers/khaki. He puts them on for supper and has them off within two minutes upon return to the cabin. Then he's back into shorts. I think three pair will do it, your tablemates will not be looking to see if you have different slacks each night. I do suggest a different shirt each night. This is more noticeable. Enjoy your cruise. Cathy
P.S. Lunch menus are posted outside the dining rooms early in the a.m. and Dinner menus are posted as soon as lunch is finished.

We love the food in the dining room as well as the staff, so yes every night we eat there. Even if we are in port we make our way back to the ship, I can't miss any of the great desserts since I have my favorites.
Why not just pack a couple pairs of slacks for your husband and different shirts to go with that is what I do. You don't need 7 slacks because it's 7 days. I myself do the mix and match thing and then you don't need as much luggage either.

We usually eat in the main dinningroom every night. There has been a couple of exceptions when the ship stayed in port longer and we went to the beach or shopping-then we ate on the lido.
I have only once been on a Carnival ship that had the Nick and Nora's-it was booked so we did not get to eat there but hope we will soon.
We are planning on booking Sensation is Sept. We plan to eat in Cozumel for dinner that night at a great pizza place as Sensation stays in Cozumel to 10 p.m.

jfritz126-normally the dinningroom has the menu posted by around 11a.m. for dinner. This is especially easy on the Fanasty ships-I stop and check and then go up 2 flights to the Lido for the pool.
On the Spirit ships you go down to deck 2 but still not too bad an elevator ride and if you are checking before going to port you usually go out on deck 2 anyway.

Just returned from the Elation and our first cruise. We ate every night in the dining room and only one night did the wife not find something she was interested in having for dinner. So she ordered a grilled chicken breast that night. You can always order a steak or chicken if nothing catches your fancy on the menu.
The dining room menus for each day are posted outside each dining room. The breakfast stayed the same each day, lunch was different each day and so was the dinner menu. The buffet had theme menus each day, Greek, Italian, USA, Mexican, ect.
We ate every night in the dining room, twice in the dining room for breakfast, and twice in the dining room for lunch. The rest of the time we ate in the buffet. GREAT PIZZA!!

Dining room for us....although this cruise we may try David's once. Dining late allows us to take a short nap after a day in the sun. DH takes a dark suit, sport coat and 3 pair of slacks. Several shirts. I take gowns for the formal nights and one pair of nice black slacks and several tops.

Every night, you can count on us being in the dining room at our appointed table. That's one of the best parts of the cruise. I love the leisurely dining process. Great food, great conversation, witty servers and I barely have to lift a finger. My DH, like many others who have responded, takes a couple of pairs of Dockers and 4 or 5 shirts. On formal nights, he wears his tux (to keep me happy). For a 7 or 8 night cruise, we each only take 1 piece of luggage. Don't miss out on all the pampering in the dining room just to save room in your suitcase. http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

My experience might be a little different on this cruise. The Destiny has 3 nighs where you are in port until 10-11pm. When we leave San Juan on the first night, it is 10pm. We leave Barbados 10pm, and Aruba 11pm. Knowing me, if my friends are out, I will be too. How have other cruisers navigated around these times? I don't want to be out at a club, have to come back to late dinner, then back out again to the club. Oh, the problems we have http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gifWe always eat in the dining room at night! It is really one of the highlights. We have enjoyed our table mates as well as getting to know our waitstaff. WE like to try an dlinger a bit after dinner and if they have time get to talk with them a little more. We always get our family 's picture taken with our waiter and busboy . We have required our 2 sons now 18 and 19 to meet us for dinner and they would not miss it! They sometimes beat us there! We usually do room service or buffet or pizza for breakfast or lunch .
The clothes My husband bring 2 or 3 slacks and his suit. He just changes into the slacks for dinner and usually, unless we are going to a show ,changes back after dinner. I think the boys waer the same dockers or cargos the whole time they just wear them to the dining room. Then we rent them a tux for formal nights. They have gotten by with the dockers and jacket on formal night when they were younger but now feel the need to dress up more. Could be the girls onboard?! Have fun!!

We usually eat every night in the dining room. Unless we are in port and find something more exciting than going back to the ship. Never eat breakfast or lunch. Usually too busy doing other things and prefer to run through the lido buffet!!!

I concur with Penny. I've only been on 7 day trips, and only took 3 pair of Dockers the first time and 2 the second. I think we ate in the dining room every night but one - but we had SUPER tablemates that we still talk to today - and that night was solely because none of the options sounded appetizing to us. I think that 1 suit and 2 pairs of dockers will square him away.

My husband and I just returned from the "Pride" Mexican Riviera cruise.
Everyone's opinions are different. We did not eat one meal in the dining room. The food that was on the lido deck was great!! A lot of variety. We were very happy eating at the buffet every night, with a table looking at the sunset!! There is something for everyone on the cruise. We didn't feel the need to dress up and go in the dining room. We did have room service every morning for coffee and toast and every evening for sweets and hot tea. We stayed in a category 11 suite and didn't miss the dining room. I read a lot of people's opinions about the dining options and how you must eat at david's or you must eat in the dining room, not until I got on board and had the first night dinner on the lido deck and we both said "boy, this food is good". The main dining room menu was not as appetizing to us as the lido deck variety. I am sure there will be people to contradict but this is our opinion. Let me know if you need any information. I will be happy to help you.

On our short Miracle cruise we ate 2 of 3 nights, skipping the formal night. We missed the dinner, wished we had brought some clothes for that night. Although the Lido does server good food, it wasn't the same. We also skipped the breakfast in the dining room, and next time we won't.

If you eat in the Lido buffet, can you sit where you want and by yourself? Or do you have to share a table?
Also, for breakfast and lunch, do you have to share a table in the main dining room?
I've only sailed with NCL, so I'm familiar with freestyle, not traditional.

We enjoyed our tablemates so much we wanted to dine with them every nite. We overpacked so much!! 1 suit(saw very few tuxes) and 2 pairs of slacks for your hubby should be good - if he's anything like mine he's out of them immediately after anyway!! A pair of palazzo pants and 2 different evening blouses would get you thru both formal nites!! We found we were in our bathing suits most of the time (pack 3 - they don't dry very well in the bathrooms).

4 days! Can't wait to spend (hopefully) every night in the dining room. I'm going on the Destiny, so there is that problem of the ship leaving from port really late, so we might not eat there when we're in Barbados or Aruba. But it is so nice to be eating food like that. I couldn't afford to go into Boston for a meal like that, so I really enjoy the dining experience. Plus, my boyfriend and I are avid fans of food. lol we love watching the Food Network, and I'm really looking forward to the Galley tour! http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

When you eat at the lido buffet, you sit where you want to. You eat whatever you want to for breakfast, lunch http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gif and dinner and that is what I enjoyed about it. The food on the Carnival Pride May 2-9 lido deck was great.
