I would like to know if you can get by with shorts and sneakers for dinner on the frist night eating in the dinning room. Because i figure you may not have your bags by then. Also what do they serve for dinner the frist night is alot of the same stuff that you get through out the week or is more or less what you would get at the casaul dinning. thanks for any info.

First night is resort casual.

You can get away with sneakers.

They allow shorts the first evening, on the theory that your bags might not yet have been delivered to your stateroom.

It is still a full five-course meal in the dining room.

Perhaps something else as well. Watch this space.

The first and last nights are the most casual of the entire cruise, but you still get the great food typical of the dining room.

I know our room stewards have often told us that dinner the first night is very casual and you can wear shorts because everyone won't have their luggage. (Although we've ALWAYS gotten our luggage way before dinner on every one of our cruises.)

I always carry a change in my carryon of dockers and polo or sport shirt. In my 14 cruises, there has only been one instance of getting luggage later than 4PM. Of course I
do try to board early.

The Carnival Capers from our April cruise on the Legend says no shorts in the dining room, even on the first night. Of course we didn't go to the dining room the first night so I have no idea what people were wearing! http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif In any case, we either do as hdawson suggested above or wear something other than shorts or jeans on embarkation.

We do that too.

I usually walk on the ship in cargo shorts but have long pants in my carryon along with a polo shirt and all my other non-replaceable stuff (drugs, knives, hand guns) so that if all my checked luggage is lost I can still operate.

Chris! kg is new, and doesn't know you yet. http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

Hi kg. Welcome to the board. What I do is wear something comfy to board in, but not shorts...usually capris, casual top, and Keds. I just make sure I wear something that IS acceptable for the first night.

What has happened, I think, is because of Carnival's policy of "in case your luggage doesn't arrive in time to change for dinner"....folks DEFINITELY take advantage of it and wear shorts and tees, whatever, the first night - even though they probably DO have their luggage already!

Cyt> I think Carnival looks the other way almost every night too, not just on the first night. I have never seen anyone turned away from the dining room. but then I never seen anyone wear a bathing suit there.

Thanks so much for all your info. The mane reason I wanted to know was because me and DH are driving down on Fri and driving all night from Nc and it will be pretty warm so I wanted him to be able to wear shorts and want really have any where to change before boarding ship so I may need to put some docker slacks in the carry on bag. Which he will be waering probably casual docker type shorts so didn't know if these were exceptable or not. Thanks

My rule of thumb: Always wear the tightest outfit the first night because it won't fit after that!

I always tell my friends, I number my outfits 1-7. One being the smallest, seven being elastic waist and baggy shirt.

Sea-soned traveler: http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif good reply!

Back to original post: We only received our suitcases JUST as we were preparing to go up to early seating (we had the EARLIEST---5:45) and with 3 kids, there was no way I could quickly locate clothes for each person in the 5 different suitcases. So, much to my dismay, my kids did not look their "best" the 1st evening. Luckily, I had on khaki capris so I felt o.k. (can't remember what DH had on? http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif but hopefully no one else can either!!) We got no stares from others but I did feel obliged to explain to our tablemates that our luggage did not arrive early enough for us to change our clothing. Rest assured the rest of the evenings we were nicely & appropriately dressed!

So, I'm hear to say that yes, sometimes the luggage will not make it in time, especially if you have early seating. And in my case, my carryon would not accomodate a change of clothing for 5 people! (had to put the 2 wine bottles somewhere, now didn't I http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
