DH and I are leaving next week for our first cruise on HAL. We are SO looking forward to it! With the talk in another thread about music onboard, it got me to wondering.... I know (from the brochure) that there is a DVD player in the cabin, and that there are "music channels" available - I assume on the TV, but is it possible to play your own music CD's? Thanks in advance....

Just left the Amsterdam, D class cabin had a CD/DVD player mounted under the tv. I purchased a CD from an entertainer and played it in the cabin player. Nice addition. They rent DVDs in the library. Acornk

Hi Mizsuzee,

As mentioned before, the cabins have flatscreen T.V.s with a combination DVD/CD player attached. No problem whatsoever watching your own DVD's (or you can rent them for $3.00 a day, unless you are in a suite and then they are free) or listening to your own CD's. I do it all the time - bring my own DVD's and CD's.

Have a great cruise and enjoy your music.

Valerie:)

p.s. the available music channels you have heard about are not on the TV per se but are available on the radio situated in the headboard behind the bed. Mostly "easy listening" or "boring old stuff" for want of a better explanation. Bring your own CD's/DVD's and you will enjoy that so much more.

But are these on all ships? The Oosterdam?

There was no radio on the Noordam; don't know about the other Vista ships. The music selections were on different TV channels.

On the ships with radios there are several channels; not all of them are of the "easy listening" or "boring old stuff" variety, either. There's some that is definitely not "easy" to listen to (and I'm not talking about the classical staion).
The Volendam also had the TV music channels as well as the radio.

You can definately play a music CD in the DVD player - but keep in mind though that the TV has to be on to hear it. Not a problem in the daytime, but if it's something you like to listen to at night, the glow from the TV will keep you up!

Well Ruth, you certainly got me there since I have yet to set foot aboard a Vista class ship (and have no plans to do so) and so would have no idea about whether or not there was a radio on those ships. I still always think of HAL as S and R class ships now.

When I referred to "easy listening" that is apparently a type of music that I would call elevator music but "easy listening" is the term used on the radio channels here. Personally I think that all the music, even on the classical station aboard the ships is awful and that's why I bring my own CD's to listen to.

Frank: from what Ruth has posted I doubt that the Oosterdam would have a radio so bring your own CDs and DVDs since you will have the DVD/CD player at your disposal. I'm pretty sure that all the ships now have the DVD/CD players.

On the Statendam, they have a state of the art DVD player that not only will play music CDs, it will also play music in the MP3 format. This will allow one to leave most cds at home and bring a whole bunch of music on a single disk.

I enjoy audio books, and we brought along two entire books on one CD in MP3 format. The machine worked fine.

I believe that they are adding the stand that raises the TV and the DVD/CD player sits underneath. On Oosterdam and some of the other vistas they may not be replacing the TV's as they are new. However a smaller LCD TV uses less power and would result in cost savings. Thats how my company justified upgrading many computer monitors from big old 21" CRTs. This would result in less power need and possibly less fuel which would help defer some of the cost.

four weeks from today I'll be sitting in our rom checking it out myself
