View Full Version : The best seasickness patches/pills????

What is the best seasickness patches/pills to bring on the ship? My aunt got a special patch from her doctor when she went on her cruise and said these worked wonders. My cousin overdosed just a wee bit and started to hallusinate (spell?). She took the patch off and then put it back on later in the trip. This caused an overdose reaction. Is Dramamine better than Bonine or is there something even better than those. I would like to stay away from the drowsy kind. Any suggestions?

I have used the patches for 9 years except for one year they were off the market and swear by them. I also take some meclizine (Bonine, but cheaper) for especially rocky times. The patches do cause some people problems though but I have never heard about overdosing on them.

I prefer Bonine over Dramamine (easier on my system) http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif. I also bought the seaband pair and they work wonder.

Good luck and have a nice trip http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

I used the stuff from the purser's desk. Worked great. My so had the patches behind his ear. Seemed to work for him, but he doesn't drink. If you drink with them, it makes you sick.

Boy,
You are not kidding!
My first cruise, I borrowed someone else's (then, prescription) patch after getting woozy from rocky seas (I was young and dumb) and drank like a fish....not good.
It got to the point where I couldn't see. When my eyes were open it was as if I had vaseline over my corneas...everything was so blurry!!
So...it was the patch, or the Pina Colada's....guess which won??? http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

The best seasickness prevention I have found is ginger ale. I had an unusual reaction with a non-drowsy sea sickness med. I searched the net and found info that recommended ginger ale. I have been using it since.......the one time I didn't, I got sea sick. Ginger ale works for me. Just drink a can before leaving port or when seas get rough. It works for me.

Bomine or the non-drowsey Dramimine are the same products. They work great for me. The first day out on our last cruise my friend and I were still feeling a little woozy (forgot to take the Bomine until the ship was moving) so our waiters gave us some cut-up green apples. It worked!!! They said thats what the staff eats if they hit heavy seas! Never had a problem taking the Bomine and drinking!

The problem that I have is, I'm okay during the cruise, its when I get off the ship that I rock n roll for nearly a week. Makes it very difficult go to work. I own a Jazzercise center and teach several times a day. I also suffer from migranes as well. My neurlogist suggested wearig the patch (Transderm Scop) prior to boarding the ship and wear it all week. I had no problems with the patch and I am a petite woman. However, once I came home and removed the patch, boy was I rock n rolling. Now I'm on Meclizine and it's starting to help. We came off the Destiny on April the 25th.

Anyone else have this problem?

Yes, I wore the patch on our 12/04 cruise. The patch worked great. I was even able to have a few drinks in the evening time. However, the rock and roll was worse once I got home and removed the patch. I guess I would rather it be that way, than sick on the cruise. Took a good 5 to 7 days to stop the rocking.

I have used Sea Bands for the last 5 cruises...they work wonderful. However, you need to use then from the first day. I wear them 2 days then try without them. If seas are rough I put them on. Make sure you are wearing them correctly. Follow directions. They do work and no side effects. I even sleep in them!

Thanks guys.. your post are wonderful, I'm especially interested in the ones that I can take with liquor. http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif That ginger ale thing seems to be a great idea. How do you take Bomine?? Is it a pill or a patch?? Can I get this at my local Wally World and how much do they run? How often do you take it? http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_confused.gif

Thanks guys and Happy Cruisin' to you all!!!

I used to use the patch and had no problems with it, even when drinking. But it did make tired by the end of the day. So I switched to Bonnine and it's great- you can drink and drink and drink lol. It's cheap too, about 5.00 per box- I think 10 to a box. I got mine at winn Dixie.

My husband gets very seasick and the only thing that works is the patch. He has tried, bonine, draminine and the sea bands. The rest of us just take dramine (non drowsy) kind the first day and are fine the rest of the cruise, no matter how rough it gets so I guess it depends on how sensitive to seasickness you are. He never tried starting off the cruise with the seabands though!

Bonine is on sale in the gift shop. The generic name is Meclizine and it is NOT Dramamine. They are 2 different drugs. As a rule Bonine should cause less drowsiness than Dramamine. There may be a "non-drowsy" form of Dramamine that is in fact the same drug as Bonine (Meclizine) but read the label closely as "regular" Dramamine is dimenhydramine and is more sedating than meclizine for most people. I would try Bonine before the cruise and see what side effects, if any, you have. Also would go easy on the alcohol the first time you take it for the same reason.

I used the patch on our last cruise and suffered blurred vision. It lasted about 2 weeks after I took the patch off. Even with the patch we had one night that was very rough and I took a Bonine and it worked like a charm. If you get the ginger don’t buy the candy form because it tastes really awful. Capsules work better.
