For those BTDT, are there places to buy 6 packs of soda either at the pier or close to the pier? We are flying an overnighter from the West coast and plan to go directly on the ship, won't have time to shop around, but would like to have some soda for the trip... Thanks Jan

I don't ever remember seeing anything at the pier nor any places nearby. You might do best picking some up at the airport and/or your first port of call, if possible.

Depending on what type of soda you want too.
Before you come look at the Chamber of Commerce Sites etc and tourism even calling prior that way you will get an exact location and tiome shedule for the stores.
The Mid Town (Borough of Manhatten Piers) passenger cruise ship terminal is very well located and near mass transit ..subway, buses, ferry service etc...

We usually bring our own Dr Pepper or Root Beer etc... aboard so we have what we like too.:D
If you like culinary treats, devices and coffee etc ...Zabars is wonderful they have an outlet in the NY Port of Authority Bus Terminal on 42/40th sts mostly just quick bites and wonderful fresh bread .
They are the Countrys largest Coffee retailer. Over 8,000 pounds a week!

What a wonderful selection of cheeses at there HQ store on Broadway.
They could probably tell you where soda is close to the piers even at there store in the Port Authority 40th/42nd st.or others .:D
NY and NYC does have can deposits too.
If your staying overnight for a lot less cost in New Jersey across the Hudson River NJ does not have a bottle or can deposit either.. we just recycle well.
Soda overseas is not the same. So obtaining it in the USA is vital to make sure you have the right taste/water and mixture rates.

We packed our SODA in zip-lock bags in our suitcase. But, we traveled by car/limo, no plane, it was fine. Also, bought more soda on the islands. Have a happy Fizzies Party! Enjoy! ;)

If you're taking a cab from the airport, ask the cabbie to stop at a deli or supermarket on the way to the pier. Depending on the route to the West Side, you'll certainly pass some delis and there are some supermarkets a few blocks north of the piers around Lincoln Center.

btdt = "Been there, done that".

Jan,
I believe you're on our December 6 Noordam sailing out of NY; there really aren't any supermarkets near the pier, as it's not a primarily residential area. Ask your cab driver to stop at CVS DRUGS, West 58th Street & Columbus Avenue. Also, Duane Reade at 49th and 9th. They'll have cheap soda by the 12-pack.

What about the Red Apple market on 823 11th Ave? Good neighborhood? Easily walkable from the pier??? Thanks for your help. We would like to drop off our luggage, go get some soda and a little breakfast at a nice little place. Any help from New York folks would be appreciated. Jan

I have been there many times and done business in there too.
I think it is on 42nd st or 41st. Near and just east of the Port of Authority Building Complex.

Going to be arriving in LGA and will be taking a cab to the pier to get on the Noordam on Oct 14. Anyone living in NYC can tell me if there are any street events that day? e.g. one that would close off 5th Ave, etc.? I hate to be stuck in traffic. I'll be arriving at LGA 10:30 and the boat leaves 4:45

This is a long walk if carrying a case of soda. I believe it's at 58th St. Anyway depending on your pier- subtract 50 from the number, then you have the street. I've sailed mostly from 98, which would be 48th St. Avenue blocks are twice as long as the street bocks, so you are looking at about 12 blocks, a little over 1/2 mile. (20=mile)
You are definately best to just have a cab stop along the way. Using public transportation will add $4 round trip pp, if 2 go, some mightly expensive soda. :) A good option however if you are doing a little sightseeing along the way.

Have your cab stop at the Duane-reade. It will have better prices than the grocery stores.

There are several small "mom and Pop" convenience stores within a few blocks of the pier, you should have no problem at all.

On the cab ride make sure you agree on the price before you get in the car as well ask a cop what is the Fixed rate to the Piers... some drivers do take advantage ...
Duane Reade (Large DRug Store Chain) has a web site so look them up in NYC ... you will probably take the midtown tunnel into Manhatten at that time but getting across town (Manhattan) may take longer than just from JFK... That time is still rush hour...

However you go, the trip from JFK to the west side will take more than an hour at that time of day. Not only is it rush hour, it is also the heaviest travel time of the year- between Thanksgiving and Christmas. You should book with a limo service such as AllState. It might actually cost less than taking a taxi and it will be a lot more comfortable. If the traffic is really bad you won't be stuck looking at the taxi meter go up will the car is not moving- there is a charge for wait times.
You probably won't be allowed to board the ship until after 11:00am and even with horrible traffic you'll get there before that. I suggest dropping your bags with the porters at the dock and going for a walk around midtown. Times Square is 4 long blocks away. You can always pick up some soda on the walk back. My advice is to take a taxi from the dock to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. What a great way to start your trip!

Thanks for the advice-we are frequent walkers and enjoy the exercise.... Sounds like it is a doable distance. There should be a drug store there somewhere.... I think I'll bring one of those rolling bags to put the soda in. We booked supershuttle for a flat rate-I think it is 34.00 for the both of us. You New Yorkers are fabulous! Jan

Jan - a cop most likely won't know (or care) the fare to the pier, specifically. There are generally fixed prices from the airports to the midtown & downtown areas of Manhattan, and those prices, as well as price-per-quarter-mile, toll policies, et al, are posted inside every NYC yellow cab. You line up for yellow cabs at the airports; the drivers pay big bucks for those medallions (livery licenses) so they won't gouge you - it's too much trouble if they get caught. At any rate, you got a better deal w/the shuttle...you'll be in rush hour traffic so loosen your jackets and sit back, it'll be awhile.
There's a Duane Reade on 49th and 9th (pier is on 12th). The area around the Port Authority (42nd/8th), while very busy, can be...icky. You should be able to drop your luggage off by 10:00, hoof it straight east to Rockefeller Center (49th/6th) and see the tree, which should be up by then. There are little restaurants right there, including one down at the skating rink (not sure if it's open for breakfast, but it'll be closer to lunchtime by the time you get there). Grab a bagel with a "schmear" (a huge blob of cream cheese!) at H&H Bagels, 46th/12th, for a typical New Yawk breakfast.
