View Full Version : For formal shy men and the women who love them

So often, I hear men complaining about "dressing for formal night." Likewise, I hear women saying how they love to dress formally but settle for less formal attire because DH only wants to wear a sport coat. Do you really want to settle for casual dining on formal nights? Fact is, some of the best meals are served in the dining rooms on formal nights. You are entitled to enjoy these meals because, after all, you worked hard all year for this vacation and you PAID for these meals.
My solution is this: RENT A TUX FROM THE CRUISE LINE!
For a fee of about $100, (less than you paid for you son's prom) many of these anxieties and hesitations can be alleviated. For those who don't own a tux or dark suit, you will have two nights of formal appropriate clothing waiting for you in your cabin. Most of the time, the tux rental includes two shirts, one for each formal night. (Translates into less packing.) Shoes can be rented as well. (Great for the guy who only wants to pack one pair.) The tuxedos are nicely pressed (no worry about wrinkles here.) Ladies, you can wear the dress you have been dreaming of and DH will match perfectly. (After all, black goes with everything.) The waistband on the pants adjusts. (Especially helpful on sencond formal night!) Bottom Line: Packing DH for two formal nights = two pairs of black socks, period!
My only warning - you WILL be buying that formal night photo!

Agreed! Did it twice, and loved it. We went as a large group, and all the guys wore rented tuxes. Not one complaint, and it was funny to see the different angles a cumberbund can be worn.
Lately, I'm back to wearing a suit, which I put in my suitcase, and send immediately to be dry cleaned and pressed once on board, avoiding the carrying of an extra garment bag.

Thanks for this post! I convinced DH to get a new suit, he looks stunning. I was wondering how to handle the packing issue.

Renting a tux won't solve the problem as it is not the hassle of bringing the clothes, it's the hassle of wearing the clothes. Men that don't want to dress up don't care if the fancy clothes are available locally or not, they just don't want to wear them. Besides, a woman in an evening gown alongside a man in coverall sounds perfectly acceptable to me..... http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Sea-soned, Wow....you put that so....poetically!
You seem to have great salesperson qualites. If you were selling that tux, most likely, I'd have bought it!
My husband went and bought new suits (he needed them desperately anyway) but now I wish we had thought about the tux rental. Maybe next cruise.

Thanks for the post, Sea-soned. I had suggested to DH that he buy a dark suit for formal night (he only owns sports coats) but he said that he would rather rent a tux. It's good to know that this works well. Can you tell me how you go about getting fitted?

Pat K,
I believe you can download the order form from the Carnival website. The order forms will also come with your docs when you receive them. Usually, they ask for a list of measurements, inseam, outseam, waist, chest, etc. Of course they reccomend you go to a formalwear shop to have the measurements taken, however, I have always measured him myself with no problems. My DH is a pretty standard 42Long so fit hasn't been that difficult. I also noticed on the Carnival site that it may be possible to rent a dark suit instead of a tux if desired.

We rented a tux for DH online, and this online rental place is FANTASTIC! The tux arrived in a timely manner, pressed, all pieces accounted for.
The total price? $78.
They also send you all you need to return it via UPS.

Highly recommend them!

Hey
Did you go to a local shop and have him measured for a tux, and was it a reasonable charge. We are thinking about doing the onboard rental through the cruise line but need to be measured. I am thinking about going and buying a suit and ask them to measure me, and explain the situation to them.

Hey...the first cruise made my DH get a suit (probably since he was just a child) and real 'Big Boy' shoes (living in Lake Tahoe tends to bring about hiking boots for all occasions). My DH didn't even marry me in a suit so guess I know what pushes his buttons...But twice a year we don our best (me with lots of dieting in between to stay in size for formals)..again Tahoe does not require much formal wear....and he looks leading man handsome and really seems to enjoy the affect on me!...

any reputable tux rental place will measure your SO free of charge. they do it as a courtesy. I just bought mine a tux and suprised him tonight. I got it off ebay for under 100 brand new, and it is nice. Figured since I am booking all these cruises http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Dawn, tell him it is not an option. Get him a tux and beat it on him like a rag doll. Hope this helps.
