Hurricane season officially runs from June 1 to Nov 30 BUT it is rare to see a June or early July huricane in the western Atlantic. Also I don't think Mother Nature listens to our arbitrary seasons http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gif (a Tampa TV meteorologist)

That's what makes Aruba the perfect caribbean island. Never a hurricane, no matter what time of year. Too far south.

Kanda, Florida diver is correct - June 1 - Nov. 30.

But - not to worry. You're safer on a cruise ship than you would be at home (my home), believe me.

With tropical depressions and hurricanes (unlike tornados), there's SO much warning. The captain will take the ship out of harm's way should there be a threat.

Cotton you are soo right. In my 12 cruises over the past 10 years the only times it was rough was the 2 winter cruises. My wife almost swore off cruising after those two!! I have never been diverted or threatened during the summer.

Thanks everyone, we've just booked another cruise for mid-August. It will be a short one so hopefully the weather will cooperate. Thanks again!

Florida Diver:

I am a long time fan of Roy Leep... Weather is my life... Thanks for addressing the hurricane questions. I am sure most Florida folks take Hurricane's in stride because we haven't been hit in a long while. I remember when Elena hit here, I didn't quite realize all the damage, until after.. I just knew that I couldn't get to the stables to feed my horses and the roads were closed. Welcome aboard!

I worked with Roy for 20yrs before he retired. We spent 3 days with Roy in this office during Elena. Longest 3 days of my life..ha ha ha.

After going through Andrew in Kendall in 1992...I don't take hurricanes lightly. I'm still shell shocked when we get bad storms!

Being on a cruise ship is the safest place to be though...the captain can move that baby out of the way pretty fast!

When hurricanes are headed for the shore, the ships are headed out to sea.

Sail Time!!!

Reading this thread has been somewhat of a comfort to me. The main reason why some of my gal pals are hesitant to book & cruise with me on the 2005 Halloween cruise is because it is during hurricane season. Heck, I wasn't even aware of it until a few mentioned it. http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif Oh, well. If it's gonna happen, it's gonna happen. No need in stressing over it. http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Happy sailing!

Don't sweat the Halloween cruise..peak of the hurrican season is the firsst two weeks of September with a big drop off after the first week of October. You have a better chance of seeing the Loch Ness Monster than running into a hurricane. http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
