I was watching tv last night and a commercial for the news came on saying something about a scary collision with a cruise ship (here in San Francisco). So, of course I had to watch the news to find out what this was all about. Finally, the story came on (this news comes on at 11). I think it was a Holland America ship, but could be wrong. Not much else comes here than HA. Any way, they played a recorded phone interview from one of the ship's guests. He reports that when heading out of the SF bay, they whole ship shuddered and vibrated. At this time, everyone looked over the side of the ship to check it out and they say they saw a whale flopping around in a pool of blood- flippers splashing around, etc. They guy also said there is a massive cover up onboard with the crew, deneying hitting anything (strange). Any how, just wondering if anyone else saw this story last night. Poor whale. http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif That also sounds like a bad way to start a cruise.

Oh No! http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif How horrible for that poor whale. I'll be looking for further info on this. Surely somebody has it on the internet. I'll check out the SF newspapers. I'm a longtime member of Greenpeace and Save the Whales. This is awful!

With all that fancy schmancy electonic/sonar equipment they have how the heck did that happen, in the bay when they probably weren't going too fast????

I forgot Celebrity comes here, too, so I'm not sure which company it was. I'd bet when the passengers disembark at the end of the cruise, they'll have more interviews to share with the news.

Someone posted an article on the RCCL boards about a similar incident that has happened before in the SF bay. The other whale was too sick to move out of the way. I wonder if this whale was sick, too. Otherwise, why wouldn't it move if it heard the ship coming?

There's also a post about this on Princess boards. They think it might have been the Coral Princess or the Regal (not sure who the Regal is).

I am a BIG animal fan, so that is sad,but you really cant move a big ship to avoid such a collision.

Awww... man, that would just wreck the whole Bon Voyage thing! I, too, feel awful for the whale.

And I agree, the ship, even with fancy equipment, can't stop or turn on a dime - especially if the whale just meanders into its path. If the whale was stationary, perhaps the ship could have avoided it, but we presume a whale to be a "moving (and unpredictable) target".

If this story is true, I'm positive we can't blame the ship's navigational crew. They would, I'm sure, do all they could to avoid this tragedy, but likely just couldn't.

Poor whale! http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif
