View Full Version : What would you like to throw overboard ?

On my very first cruise, a lady at our table told us she brought her cremated dog's ashes and she wanted to sprinkle them overboard. WEIRD in my opinion. I love my dog as much as a child, but that is going too far for me. It is not like my dog is an avid cruiser. he he
Anyhow.. I was reminiscing about freak lady with DH and I decided what I would like to throw overboard. I would like to throw my DH's blackberry, and laptop over board! Look out below......
Can you believe his place of employment (no names mentioned) asked him for information about how to contact him on the ship? And.. they would pay the premium to call. jeez!
What would you throw overboard?

MiamiVice-- if you are in IT then think of one of the BIG 3 service providers. Competes with IBM, and the like. I used to work for the jokers until I couldn't stand the enronesque corporate politics any longer. Fortunately DH works on another account and is treated better. I guess he thinks he should be loyal. I say "show me the money".
If you are looking for a nice laptop, and blackberry it will be flying from a GTY 8A balcony cabin on the triumph 5/22. http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Funny I guess, but as an employer, I see it in an entirely different light.
I would think most men and their wives would be ecstatic to be married to such a productive and valuable employee that an "emergency" number is requested in case their counsel is needed.
When I was informing ALL of my clients about my upcoming cruise on the PRIDE last week, I was delighted that several of them "asked" for the ship name and itinerary, and how I could be reached in the event of a "problem" so severe that they would be willing to pay $8-12 per minute for a shore-to-ship call to receive my "valuable" input. http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
I gloated. http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Sorry, but I don't see it that way. I know many people in the IT field and they have to wear beepers/phones 24/7. It's just a big intrusion on their personal lives being at the beck and call of their employers all the time. I think intruding on someone's vacation is terrible. Having people linked up 24/7 is just a polite way of saying we need to have this position staffed around the clock but don't want to spend the money so we will call you whenever we want. If you appreciate an employee give them a raise, don't ruin their vacation.

Technology has caused us to forget how to relax.
If my DH allowed himself to be bothered on vacation, when he is on call 24/7 all other days of the year (which he is) I would throw HIM overboard!

I've been an executive, a consultant and a regular worker. If I couldn't go on vacation without having to worry that the place was going to collapse, then I haven't done a good enough job training and working with those around me. The best advice I ever got was to train those under me so that they could replace me. By doing so you benenfit them (they get a promotion), the company (they get a better worker) and yourself (you get an even bigger promotion sooner). Of course, this only applies if you're good at your job! http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I will vote for the chair hogs. I leave this week and after all that I have heard about those chair saving books, shoes, towels, bags, containeres of sunscreen etc. I vote to throw these items overboard and then take the chair that they once were in. When their owners come back from lunch, the spa, the casino or where ever they were and ask where the item is I will simply say it was swallowed up by the sea and then pray I dont end up there as well.

The maitre 'd on the Legend. Each night, just as dessert was being served, he would aplologize for the interruption and proceed with his long list of announcements. This was followed with a request (translated as - order) for all wait staff to perform their nightly song and dance for those of us who were unfortunate enough to be trapped in the dining room. Very demeaning for everyone involved. http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif
I also agree with cell phones. Mine gets turned off the minute I cross the border. There is no job good enough to interrupt me while I'm on vacation. Anyone breaking that rule would incur the Wrath of Beth. They were well trained - deal with it. http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

The problem is the lack of resources and qualified help. You can only train someone who is "willing and ABLE" to learn. Oh I doubt the DH is worried that the place will collapse, it is more that they don't know their heads from a hole in their behind to figure out what to do without him.
The other part is that they are too low on funds to pay someone who is capable of carrying the same position. Finding someone who is willing and able to work 85 hours per week is also an interesting concept. Same situation in the rest of corporate America.
I just want to throw the blackberry over board so I don't have to hear another conference call :-) Oh... meetings, what a waste of time in my opinion. I sure hope Nextel has not figured out how to put towers out in the ocean http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Miami Vice-- then I bet you KNOW exactly who I am talking about http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif It falls 2nd to IBM every time. Of course there are a few interesting acronyms they use for IBM, but they have a few acronyms for their own name too-- he he http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
I am with you on the vacation thing-- give em' a break. I am not sure people realize how much work goes into being on call 24/7 for a computer/ server http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
At least a doctor gets to take a nap once in a while- hee hee.
Maybe we should pick up an alias so they cannot contact him while he is on vacation. This is his first vacation day since January, and he only took 3 days last year. Craziness, I tell you. Makes me wonder how this particular company is not doing so well financially?

nanc angel- You can throw over as much as you have room for, my list would be a mile longof things and people http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
I went shopping tonight at Lazarus/ Macy's, to look for 2 dresses for formal night. Anyhow -- I happened to be "just browsing" in the Jones New York casual section and I asked the clerk where the social dresses were. She snottily replied in one word, "upstairs", and then mumbled something under her breath. So... that set me off, I turned around and said, "what did you say?" she made no answer to me. I guess she thought I should not be looking in her Jones New York section. I deserve to shop in that store as much as anyone, and my money spends just as well as someone elses. I cannot understand it. Anyhow-- I think she needs to be thrown over board. Snotty woman! The only thing I can figure is that I must have looked like a scum bag tonight because the girl in Abercrombie was rude to me also. Needless to say I bought nothing at Lazarus, and NOTHING at Abercrombie. Other stores were more than willing to help. Forget them rest-- I am going on a cruise and they are not coming with me http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Okay, I hope I won't be in trouble for this one. I'm an elementary school teacher. My biggest problem student announced to me and my teaching partner last week that he would be out this week on a cruise. You can imagine that my teammate and I were scrambling to get him make up school work to take along.
Teachers in the staff room suggested that maybe he would be thrown overboard while on his cruise. (This guy has made his "mark" all over the school! I'm afraid to think of what he's doing on the cruise ship.)
The vice principal commented, "I'm glad he's cruising this week, because I don't want him on my first cruise in June!!"
Anyway, yesterday was great without him in the classroom. When he returns we only have 7 days of school left!! Cathy

What would I like to throw overboard?
In no particular order...
1. My ex. http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif
2. My drunk, belligerent tablemate from my last cruise.
3. All of the clothes that I so diligently ironed pre-cruise, but are wrinkled upon arrival.
4. My S&S bill

Well-- I don't have any ex's to speak of, the DH is the best ever. However I have 2 sets of friends going thru the big D right now. I checked to see where I could throw the worthless ex-wife, and a worthless ex-husband. Carnival said they have a "special" holding area for them free of charge. They will be discharged from the area during the evening and become shark bait. ha! If your ex racked up more than 40,000 in debt like the scum bag ex wife of a good friend then they get dealt with in a more unusual manner -- I will let you imagine.

Call it the Orkin Cruise, for EX-termination.

Think about it Tom... if you HAVE an "ex", you also ARE an "ex". If EVERYONE gets to throw an "ex" overboard, there will be no one left!!!
Do I have to explain EVERYTHING to you kids???? http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I would like to throw off all of those people who haven't paid their bill and won't go to the pursers desk to do so--thus keeping the rest of us on the ship (especially those who have an early flight!!). Of course, if we do have to stay on the ship, how about letting us just cruise for another week or so (free of course!!)
I would also like to get rid of anyone who says "This is the worse cruise that I have ever been on"!! What's the matter, did your steward forget your towel animal one night?????

My mother in law passed away last April. Her wish was to be cremated and have her ashes spread over the ocean in San Diego. We haven't been able to do that yet, so she is still sitting in our closet waiting to become one with the ocean. However, you have to get a permit to do this, so as much as I would like to do this while on a ship in San Diego, I want to do it the right way.

Littlegoo: I would think that tossing ashes overboard would be a messy endeavor. Better to wade into the ocean and do it that way. My mom did that with her DH when he died, but she, too, kept him around the house for quite a while before getting around to the ocean thing.
Tef: Wish I would have thought of that when MY loans came due!
