Wow this is news to me. I had always thought Pools on cruiseships are pumped straight from the ocean (I often see them empty out the pools throughout the cruise.

If HAL's pools are freshwater, that would mean we have to contend with the other elements - Chlorine!!

I actually prefer sea water as it won't discolor my bathing suits.

Once upon a time it was sea water used to fill the pools. Problem with that, though, is the salt is corrosive to the pipes.
Fresh water is made onboard via a reverse osmosis process and is used in the pools.

I just called HAL today and asked this very same question about our Zuiderdam cruise on Saturday. The rep told me that there are two pools. One is fresh water, one is salt water. But, they couldn't tell me if they were heated for Alaska. Does anyone know the answer to that one?

Thanks,

Tracey

Mary, forgive me, forgive me.:o (Mutters to self: I do love children, I do, I do, I do......)

Tracey, when we went to Alaska on Zaandam last month, the pools were heated (although we never used the aft pool, brrrrr, too cold and windy out there....)

Fresh water in both - the hot tubs are emptied and cleaned each night. What a treat to soak in a jacuzzi while riding the waves and having the water slosh abit around you. What a treat to swim in the outdoor pool while docked in Sitka Alaska looking up and around at the snow capped mountains and watching the eagles flying overhead. I was not in the Lido pool but I understand it was heated. The pool areas were kept very very clean.

Salt water was in the aft pool on Prinsendam last month. I prefer salt water, but I don't think they did it just to please me.
