The ships aren't back in the Caribbean yet from Alaska, Canada/New England, Europe, etc.

Rev. Neil has so many great pictures available to see and copy. I used several of his while making a scrapbook for DD last Feb for Valentines from our Christmas cruise.
I use one as a screen saver....it makes me go AHHHHHHHh, each morning.

The earliest an HAL ship will be in the Caribbean is mid October.

Maybe someone on the Carnival Board might have posted pictures from their stop at HMC this summer.

Well, from those pix I am totally impressed. We have only been to one private island, NCLs. We had a blast, the food was good and I felt like I was back in high school and going to a beach party picnic, but it certainly wasn't anything like what these pictures show. I really can hardly wait for the next 2 plus months to pass. NMnita

I'd also be interested to see Pics of those "New" Tendering Boats that they have now at HMC for taking you to and from the ship.

You'll really love Half Moon Cay, it's an absolutely great beach, the water is beautiful, and as widely told it's the best private Island of all the cruiselines.

For those of you who have beeen to HMC before: How much shade is there on the island? From pictures I have seen, it looks like trees are scarce.

There is some shade along the beach but not a lot. You can sit up in the main area, away from the beach, under covered patio areas at picnic tables but that's not very interesting. There are also a couple of bars that are covered and you can sit there. One is on the beach and the other (maybe others?) are up in the main area. I realize, for lots of reasons, some folks don't want to or can't be out in the sun but it is an island in the Caribbean and lots of sun just kind of comes with it. If you want to be on the island but in shade I'd recommend getting one of the cabanas. That way you'd be on the beach but could get out of the sun.

There are some trees with shade, and if the huricanes would leave them alone, there would be more shade. You can also rent a clam shell (halfmoon shaped blue tarps in the photos) or rent a cabana :)

If you get the shaded tree spots, just remember the shade moves and you may not be able to move with it.

Looks pretty shady here. I hope so anyway, because I'm renting one in November.

Thank you for your answers on the shade. Because we are both fair-skinned, we try to stay in the shade. MY BIL, who is traveling with us, is on medication that makes him sensitive to the sun.

I don't like the clamshells because they may block any breeze that is blowing.

Luckily, we will be driving to port so I think I will just bring two light weight beach umbrellas that I have. That way, we will also have them for other island beaches that we may decide to do.

Before I get any comments, I will be leaving home the ice chest, 2 cases of beer, 4 cases of soda, 5 liters of booze, crock pot, blender, coffee pot, blow up baby pool, travel iron, curling iron, hair dryer, scented candles, power strip, over the door shoe holder, duct tape, and bubba cups. :D

A tip:Take along and use the Baby 's sunscreen 50. You will still tan but not burn, best to apply when your getting dressed so you dont miss any spots :)

Great idea!!! Lucky you driving to port, if it were me I would be bringing everything but the kitchen sink LOL j/k

I know this is pretty basic, but we will be going to HMC for the first time (third HAL cruise) in April.

Is there food available on HMC? I assume that there is; you can't expect people to spend half a day there and not eat. But is it "free" (as in, included in your cruise fare, as the onboard food is)? What kind of food is it?

What else, if anything, besides sand and seawater, is "free"? I'm not being cheap. We will probably do one or more of the activities on the island. I'm just trying to find out if I need to bring any cash with me.

Paul NobleYes, there is a free BarBQ lunch, served from 11:30 - 1pm. Free punch or ice tea.

All other drinks on the island there is a charge for. You dont need cash, your sign & sail cabin card is all you need. Only place that uses cash on the island is the post office, payphones, and tips for the hair braiders.

Lounge chairs are free, cabanas and clam shells are not. All other activities there is a charge for.

Yes, Paul, there will be food. The kitchen staff sends the food and beverages to the island before the passengers go over there.
There is a tasty barbeque lunch set up with burgers, hot dogs, chicken, veggie burgers, fish filets, and all the trimmings. Those delicious cookies will be available along with cold ice tea and such.
You do need to pay for sodas or alcohol, but you charge that to your shipboard account. So, no need to take currency if you don't want to.
I don't remember if there's a charge for ice cream in a little ice cream stand in the central courtyard. I think so.
You can check the excursions page or the excursions book for activities and their cost. I can recommend a long casual walk along the water's edge. The sand is soft. The view is spectacular. By the time I have done that for 75 minutes or so I like to hitch a ride back to the ship.
