We will be in LA enroute to Auckland early October, probably only got six hours ashore, but I would just love to be able to find a few nice pieces of clothing. Can anyone tell me where we should head for from the cruise terminal. My thinking is that we jump a cab from the ship and head straight there. I would really appreciate some help on this one.

This one is hard because LA is very big! Are you wanting bargins or the fancy hollywood clothes ????

Rodeo Drive for fancy clothes and the Garment District for bargins :)

Taxi's should know where both are :)

Just becareful in the garment district, there are a few crooks around. Also dont wander of the main roads!

I'm not trying to scare you but you need to use caution. If you stay on the main streets you will be ok:)

There are also a few shops close to the port in Ports of Call, if you just want to stay close to the ship :)

Not that I do a lot of shopping for women's clothes;) but we have a pretty good size Mall here in Torrance, called Del Amo Fashion Center run by the Mills Corporation. http://www.delamofashioncenter.com/static/node399.jsp;jsessionid=awlB83Ms4XlaMUbQ02
Yesterday was the grand opening of a brand new revision of that Mall. From the L.A. Cruise Terminal/San Pedro in a cab will take you 15-20 minutes tops to get to Del Amo Fashion Center. If you decide to do it, get lost and/or need assistance, feel free to call me at my work at the Torrance Police Department at (310) 618-2300. I'm working Day Shift so, depending on what date, I could even be on duty that day. Good luck to you!

How about South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa? www.southcoastplaza.com (http://www.southcoastplaza.com), or Fashion Island in Newport beach, www.shopfashionisland.com (http://www.shopfashionisland.com). Both have some great stores. They're a bit of a drive from the port, but probably no farther than Beverly Hills.

Thats quite helpful thanks everyone. John your offer of assistance is amazing, thanks so much.
We have been to LA before usually passing through on our way to the UK to visit DH family. So a stop in Long Beach is unique for us. I would like to look at some nice shops and do a bit of sightseeing near the ship so we don't get left behind. Certainly don't want to go to Beverley Hills, been there done that. We are just looking for something that might have reasonable prices not too far from the ship.

How practical is it for someone with no more than 6 hours of shore time to "hop in a cab" and head out to Beverly Hills or the OC, shop, find a taxi and return to port in time?

I have taken too many taxies from LAX to NPB and the trip took almost 2 hours, due to traffic. John Wayne Airport is far more convenient but may not be a good connection.

So you're coming into the Port of Long Beach as opposed to L.A./San Pedro?

We are in LA on October 3. Thanks for your help John, who knows we might even need to take you up on your most generous offer.

Actually JOhn, good point, I think I was guessing, does anybody know where HAL ties up. My ticket dosen't actually say, I just searched the internet and then made a presumption, I could be miles out. I am sure glad I have found you John xox

HAL has been to both ports here in LA but that's no biggie! Long Beach' port is adjacent San Pedro. Adds maybe 10-15 minutes to the ride to Del Amo Fashion Center, depending on which way the cabbie goes. 03 OCT is a Tuesday - chances are I'll be working. Just let me know when you make a decision;)

John, hooray, as we say down here, it has taken me an age but I finally found it. We are down for the Carnival terminal, the only ship in port on that day. We didnt show on the San Pedro list. It says Long Beach Terminal, Long Beach, CA.
SO what are we looking at, at least 30 to 40 mins each way, that will chew up a bit of our time. Don't suppose you could send a car, that is a joke. lol One of the highway ones that have the cool siren lol :)

ChivalryGirl, your ship docks in San Pedro (Los Angeles), but like John said, both ports are within a few miles of each other.

John, I can't count the number of times I've been to Del Amo! It was my favorite place to shop when I lived in the South Bay, about 15 years ago. I didn't know they remodeled it, I'll have to take a ride up there.

Long Beach port is about a 30 minute drive from Torrance. Here's the deal. The stores in Del Amo do not open until 10:00 in the morning as do most Mall stores here. I think you'll be fine depending on what time you have to be back on board. Can't promise you lights and siren since that might make the news;) If you decide that it is what you want to do that day, we'll talk about details when it gets a little closer or shoot me an e-mail at jmprins@sbcglobal.net !

Sorry, by the time I found the website I wanted, you had posted. I found the info on www.cruisecal.com/dnn (http://www.cruisecal.com/dnn). It shows where all the ships will be on any given date.

Thanks so much for taking the trouble. I think i have spent so much time researching this trip my mind has become bogged down. I think I probably worked out some time ago that we would be berthing at Long Beach. Thanks again
