...It's funny you mention those items. On our last two out of three cruises we found a free "boarding gift." Both items were found in the open safe when we arrived. The ($50 value)ladies watch was found in the inside corner of the safe where the door hinges are. There's a little spot where "stuff' can hide. The next cruise, I ran jokingly to the safe when we boarded and found nothing. For whatever reason, I lifted up the little carpet pad that lined the floor of the safe and... viola! a $25 casino chip!
On our last cruise, it must have been quite a picture, watching the four of us running into the cabin and diving for the safe!
The moral of the story, check the safe real well twice! Once upon boarding for your special gift, and upon leaving, trying not to leave a "parting gift!" ...Hope this helps...

Last month I found a camera in the corner of the safe. It was in a plastic bag. I turned it in to the purser's office. I found it on the last morning of the cruise while I was checking the safe to make sure we got all of our stuff out of it, the camera was tucked away in the front right corner where you could not see it because of the door.

On Miracle April 9 I found a CZ sterling dinner ring and a hair clip. Since neither was expensive I turned it into the steward if I had found something like a video camera I would have taken it to the purser's office.
I would never keep anything I found like that (except for maybe the casino chip since it was no good to someone who is no longer on ship) Keeping stuff like that is stealing and even though who knows if the steward or purser is honest at least I know I did not take anything that was not mine.

...OMG! I'M A BAD PARENT!
...I better go round up my children (both of 'em) and tell them the sins of my ways! With all due respect, I strongly disagree. Since when is finding something stealing?! Finding a coin in the pay phone? A dollar bill in the street? An extra munchkin in the Dunkin' Donuts box? All stealing?? Something was taken that wasn't yours. If the extra munchkin' isn't returned, that's stealing? http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif
...Now, it goes without saying, if a watch, camera or anything of value is found during your cruise, say on the Lido Deck or in the Showroom, of course you turn it into the Purser's Office. Someone is going to be looking for that item and IMHO, it is your responsibility as a good person (and a good parent) to return that item. Any honest person would do this.
...In regards to my finding a watch in my above post, who knows how long that watch was there. Does anyone else happen to check the front right corner of the safe, behind the door hinge, for any "boarding gifts?" That watch could have been there from the last cabin tenants, from three cruises ago or the inaugural cruise three years ago! Sorry, but unless it has a name/address on it, or I witness someone losing/dropping an item, or I find something that someone on the present cruise obviously lost, it's "finders/keepers."

I have to disagree.... Do the right thing and turn it in. The ship has records of who has stayed in those rooms, they might contact Carnival with their room # and inquire about their lost belongings. This is different than finding a dollar bill laying on the floor - it cannot be traced.
Here is a story - Once, at my place of work I found a wad of $80 laying on the floor. Nobody else saw it, nobody was around, so I picked it up. I went to my boss and told her about it. We put it in an envelope and left it in the safe to wait for the owner to claim it. The next day, a migrant worker came in looking really sad, and asked if by any chance the money had been turned in. When he was given his hard earned money back, he was about to cry. He wanted to give me half of it for my honesty - But I couldn't. My reward was seeing how my honesty paid off. This money probably fed his family for a couple of weeks. Keeping things that don't belong to you is just not right. I would never have felt right if I would have kept it. That's how I was raised, and I would hope that is how you all raise your kids.

KARMA........ Do the right thing, it'll help you out in the end.
This post reminds me, I misplaced some jewelry on my last cruise, I bet it was in that corner! It wasn't the good stuff, so I really don't care, but had it been, I would hope somebody would have had the decency to turn it in, in case I really wanted it back - maybe some of this stuff that doesn't look so great to you might have sentimental value to the owner - don't be selfish and rude. Turn it in.

doug910-nope it would do no good to turn in a dollar bill or even a $20 as everyone would say it is their's. But if you found a billfold even if there is no ID you could ask them to describe it and that is the decent thing to do. I lost an earring-CZ no real value in money- but it was something my mother now deseased gave me. No value except sentimental as it was one of the last gifts she had given me-it would have been nice if someone had turned that in.
Anyway I was referring to the camcorder. That is several hundred dollars and I can't believe someone would keep that and not turn it in. Well I say what goes around comes around-folks like that will get what they deserve.

Well, nothing exciting found for us, just a really cute pair of rhinestone flip-flops! (in my size, no less!) Who knew you could "go formal" in flip-flops! I found them under our bed on the first night of our cruise (while looking for my OWN shoes! http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif) I gave them to the cabin steward! (I hope they were rhinestones and not diamonds!!! http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif) LOL!
Finders Keepers??? Maybe when you're in grade school and find a cool pencil, but in my world now, it's just tempting bad karma! JMHO

You can call me naive, but I would think that the cabin steward would find these things when preparing the cabin for the boarding passengers.
If they miss these things, I can only imagine what they find.

I strongly disagree with the Finders Keepers - As a parent whose child left behind her CD case - I wish the Finder would have returned to the Purser. As soon as we hit the airport she realized she left it behind and we called Carnival, the ship and lost and found. It was never returned. Too bad either the cabin steward or the people who came into the cabin next weren't honest enough to return.
Another time my husband left his digital camera on the table in the lounge. We had been there for a few hours and had a few drinks (with another couple) - we were all very friendly with our waitress. The next morning he realized he left it behind. Went to the lounge we were in to see if it was there. Went to purser who told us it had not been returned to them (which he said she should have done immediately. We didn't know the server's name so we went back to lounge that night to see if she was there - she was. We asked her if she had seen our camera and she hesitated and then said yes - she had taken it back to her room for safekeeping. Made plans to meet her when she got off duty to get it. She never showed up. (:< . Went to pursers and they had to get it from her - not sure what ever happened to her.

Wow! AT least you got your camera back. Thank goodness. I remember when I waitressed in college - When someone tipped me well and left something behind, I would run out to the parking lot, chase them down and give them their sunglasses, or whatever else they left behind. If they stiffed me, I would just turn it in to the manager. Either way, I would never keep anything that didn't belong to me, I'm just not going to run out to the parking lot to give something to somebody if they didn't have the courtesy to tip me what I deserved. I know I strayed a little off topic there, but to get back on track..... if you wouldn't want people to keep your stuff that you leave behind, don't keep their stuff.

When Carnival did the private island stop on the Pride we were swimming in the little lagoon area and I found someones S&S card in the water and when we got back to the ship we were waiting in the line to be checked for reboarding and I overheard some cat saying he lost his ID and card so right away I asked what his name was and he matched the name on the S&S card. Talk about timing though I think he would have rather had his Id back rather then the S&S. I told him that is all that I found and where I had found it and that I did not see his other ID.

This was funny to us-
On our Imagination cruise the previous guests left a pair of men's flip flops under the bed. We kept moving them from cabin to cabin as a joke between girls. When I got home and unpacked my luggage, there was those &^$#! men's flip flops which my sister in law had hidden in my luggage! Lucky for me- my hubby (who didn't get to cruise) did not see them! Next visit to my sister in laws house- I left them for her and her friend in their mailboxes!

I love the Pride, it is my favorite ship.
On our first Pride cruise we found a dirty sock under the bed...threw it away. On the second Pride cruise in a Cat.11 suite, we found a condom wrapper in the drawer. Picked it up with tissue and took it to the information desk. (yuck!) The room steward should never have missed that. I felt bad for him after I turned it in. I should have just thrown it away.
We did leave our camera in the dining room. We had first seating and did not realize it was gone until the dining room had been cleared. Our waiter turned it in to the maitre'd (sp?). We were so happy about that. We would hate to lose our camera with all of those memories on film!

My daughter left a stuffed bear behind at our pre-cruise hotel. This was very special to her because her best friend gave it to her. We didn't realize it was missing until after we sailed. When we got back to port, I called the hotel and sure enough, they still had it. We were going straight to the airport but a friend was going back to the hotel to get her car so she picked it up and mailed it to my daughter.

Thanks Grouchpuss for posting this. As I was reading it, I thought of my Sister-in-law on our recent cruise. We attended all the art auctions on board, in part to collect the complimentary print they give you at each one. Well, when she got home and unpacked, she realized that she left all of them in her cabin. I called the 800 number at Park West Gallery, and they are sending out new ones! Now I feel a little better about the money I spent on that print I bought!

I usually put my drink/photo/shop receipts under the mattress instead of a drawer. Once on the Inspiration, I was removing all those signed receipts to just check the balance, and pulled out two credit cards that weren't ours. Turned them in to the Purser's Desk, and it turned out that they belonged to the people in our cabin the week before. Seems that the guy had accused the steward of "stealing" his credit cards, and made a big stink about it. Sounds to me like he just forgot where he hid them.
