I can't stand the thought of being away from my dog for 8 days! http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif Yes, I know it's a cruise and I should be extatic, but our family is so attached to our Boston Terrier (Daphney), I know we're going to be missing her bad.
I am leaving her at my Mom's house, she also has a Boston Terrier and I'm sure it will be like a vacation for her too.
I think only "fellow dog owners" can understand how I'm feeling right now.
It's going to kill me to leave her behind and drive away. Argh! I hate this part of vacation!
WE NEED TO ALL GET TOGETHER AND REQUEST A PET FRIENDLY CRUISE LINE!!!! LOL

Or you could just be sure you've got Daphne set up to have a nice vacation too!

Be sure her photo is posted along with all the other pets who's friends go cruising, against their will:

I have the same problem with my 'escape artist' kitties (2).

They emailed me every day while I was gone and my cell worked to talk to them a couple of times, too.

Email worked well so that every day, I could check in, send XOXO, and tell them what I was up to as well as make sure they didn't escape and were behaving with "Uncle Howard" in command.

I also took a framed photo of them snuggling up together and put it on my vanity in the cabin.

We really hate to kennel our chocolate Lab or leave the cat at home alone with someone to check in on him every day. Last cruise we were lucky that our youngest DD stayed home with them.

They all survived. http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Emme - I am also the proud mom of a Boston Terrier (Duchess) who I love and adore and I hate having to leave her. Both my daughter and brother also love her, so they tend to fight over who gets to keep her when I'm gone! I heard somewhere that the Queen Mary allows pets, but I have no idea if that's true. That ship is out of my price range, but if I could take her, Duchess would definitely be a cruising dog!

Glad to know that I'm not the only psycho out there! We hate leaving our babies, 2 adorable Shiba Inus behind when we selfishly travel. I make sure to always bring them back presents when we come back. On the last cruise we bought them squeaky states of Florida from the "Blue Cat" in Key West. They loved that toy.
I make sure to send them to a good kennel where they get plenty of attention. It's like a summer camp to them, and I think they don't mind it. This place has doggie swimming, and even arts and crafts where they can make you a plaster paw print! At least they have each other.
As for the cats, they are scared of people besides us, so we leave them at the house. Last time we put them in the "kitty Condo" they were petrified! As long as they're at home they can wander around and not worry about scary people they don't know. We just make sure to get the jumbo feeders for their food and water, and leave an extra jumbo litter box.

Even if I could bring Sven and Sumo along, I don't know if I would. I don't see them having too much fun being confined in a little cabin, and I would be afraid of them jumping overboard. I also wouldn't want them being in Mexico I don't know what kind of doggie diseases they have out there.
Unless there was a "Kennel Carnival" Then I would bring them!

I'm sure all animal lovers miss their pets while on vacations.

My 'baby' Ms Magnolia, will be 13 yrs. old tomorrow, and she's been my companion since she was 5 wks old. I will admit she's a VERY pampered cat.

I don't take cruises over 5 days in length because I won't leave her alone any longer than that. I don't trust anybody to come in and check on her, because she 'might' run out the door!

Cats are pretty much self-sufficient, whereas dogs are a completely other matter. I do miss her while I'm gone, but I don't carry a picture. http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

we always take a pic or two (or 3) haha...with us and post them in our cabin...

I feel the same about leaving my Golden, Max.
I found a wonderful woman who opened a kennel on her home property. She only takes 5 or 6 dogs at a time and she treats Max like he was one of hers. When I go to pick Max up, he doesn't want to leave her and the other dogs he's made friends with during the week...so I don't mind leaving him there because although I know he misses me, he is happy there and it's like a vacation for him.

Glad to know that I am not alone. http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gifI think it's a great idea to take a picture of her along on the ship, I will definately have to do that.
Okay, don't laugh at what I'm about to say http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_redface.gif but I've been thinking about making a video of us telling her that we miss her and we'll be back soon! I know if I ask my Mom to play it for her when we're gone, she'd laugh her head off!!
When we go on bike rides, our child is on the back of DH's bike and the dog sits on the back of my bike. Safely secured of course. The neighbors crack up laughing at her. When we go through the drive through for ice cream, all the employees know my dogs name but not ours!
She is a lot of fun to have around and we feel very lucky to have her in our family.

It's nice to know that there are so many others out there who feel as I do about their pets. http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Emme--

Right there with you... we, too, own a Boston Terrier-- his name is Buckner, and he's flat out the best pet we've ever had. We miss him when we're gone, and yes, my wife takes a picture of him with her in a tiny frame and she puts it on her bedside on the ship. We're all a little bit crazy, but aren't Bostons worth it? http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Canceled a cruise last year because I didn't want to leave our American Pitbull Terrier (same name as the dog in the post above but the key for the last letter in his name isn't working....geeez) behind. We just got him from the pound 6 months before and didn't want to make him feel abandoned again. When I started eckspressing(spelling, I know) doubts about the kennel we have booked for him, wife made it clear we are not canceling this year. So i'm spending today checking out kennels to make sure they look okay for my pup. The cat on the other hand loves the "kitty condo" we keep him at when we go away.

WOw! I love you people! Pets do deserve to be loved and pampered. I felt so bad when I left my little Sven behind when she was a few months old because we had to go across the country to get married. It ended up being alright because she was so spoiled there. ( if you have ever seen a Shiba Inu puppy, you would understand why) She got so much attention at the kennel, and loves everyone there. The kennel was also at the vets office, and she loved them so much that she would get excited over getting shots!

You are not crazy at all. I feel the same way about leaving our dogs, 1 Boston Terrier (Lilith) and Golden Retriever (Blaze). I don't think the video thing is a bad idea. Our Boston loves to watch TV.

Fortunately I do have family that stays at my home and takes care of all of the animals, but it doesn't stop us from missing them. I like the idea of taking a picture along.

Emme- I most DEFINITELY do not think you are mental, I on the other hand... am!
Last year on vacation I called to check on my golden (Anna) every day, and sometimes twice a day.
Fortunately, my baby stays with grandma. Grandma happens to be an animal lover, and is even on the board of directors at the Greater Dayton Humane Society. I don't care if people think I am nuts when it comes to my dog, because I will go ape sh** when it comes to mistreatment of animals. If you want to seem me get on a soapbox then that is the one! IE: my neighbors seem to think it is okay for their dog to be outside 24-7, 365 days a year. While on the other hand my dog is pampered and lives in the lap of luxury comparatively speaking.

My dog knows the tellers at the bank, and she always gets a snack. She gets 1-2 free french fries at Wendy's up the street. I am off of work on Friday, and that is our day to run errands so she can take rides in the car. There is not much that I would NOT do for her.

I don't think making a video is funny at all, hey -- I would much rather hear about someone like you than someone who just leaves there animals alone all of the time.
I even will call and leave Anna messages on the machine so she can hear me ... now who is nuts, but I admit it!

Last, and this is pretty darned funny... before we go away and leave her on vacation, I always go get 2 new toys, and some special treats for grandma to give to her while we are gone. ALWAYS!! Has your dog had greenies? My dog loves them so much we call them dog crack. http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
They are pricey, so she doesn't get them as often as she would like! But perfect treat for vacation time.

For all of you pet freaks out there. There is a company called Petedge - they have a websight. You can get "greenies" and other great dog and kitty stuff for dirt cheap - wholesale with no minimum purchase.
I have a ball toy that records your voice and then plays it when it rolls, and then treats fall out when it rolls, so your dog can hear your voice and get a treat.
Yeah, it also makes me sad when I see people leave their dogs outside all of the time. My doggies have slept with me on the bed since they were brought home at the age of 6 weeks. I couldn't bear to leave them in a crate all night. They never peed on the bed or anything. My boy, Sumo slept the whole night on my tummy the very first night I brought him home, and my husband wonders why he's such a Mamma's boy!

Littlegoo -- Totally got ya on that one! Anna sleeps wherever she pleases in our house :-) Although, we did get a new family room sofa 2 months ago so she is not allowed on that, and she cannot sleep on our living room sofa either. But -- I did buy her a slumber ball dog bed from Doctor fosters and smith, and she LOVES IT! She loves greenies and woobies. most of the pet stores around here carry greenies. I will check out that online place and see if they are any cheaper. Gotta keep my dog with her fix. The Eukanuba is reasonable, so she can have more greenies.
On the way home from getting Anna she slept with her head on my shoulder. She cried the first night, and then never again. She is a momma's girl! Although -- the harriest dog that ever lived. I am working on my second vacuum cleaner in 4 1/2 years because of her http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

HILARIOUS! http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif LOL!!!!

I call DBF's doggies and leave messages on his machine for them. He thinks I'm nuts, but I love them like they're mine after 7 years.

My kitties sleep with me all night, every night, too. But boy kitty, Samper, gets hungry around 3AM, no matter what is left out for them. He solves this by incessantly licking my face until I get up for the "good stuff" (wet food).

It was WEIRD on Destiny! I actually slept 8-10 hours straight through with no 'after feeding insomnia'!!!!

I have a 2 year old silky terrier name Abby. I will be bringing lots of pictures of her. She is our little girl and this is the first time I've left her with someone. I'm having a friend live at house while we're gone to take care of her. She is so spoiled that when I want to insult her I tell her to stop acting like a dog. You would not believe how we spoil her. We have had him for the past 2 years and we plan our vacations around his allergy seasons. We can only go in the winter.Last Feb he wouldnt eat for 1 day which for a bulldog is amazing! He was heartbroken. I keep having second thoughts about our upcoming vacation as we have to drop him off on the Friday before and then pick him up the Monday after the cruise...10 days!!!!! Only a pet lover can relate to this thread! We have an ex-racing Greyhound, Kayley, and and Italian Greyhound, Hunter, and leaving them is very traumatic for me! I think I could leave my son home when we go cruising easier than I do my hounds! I bet a dozen times a day one of us will say, "I wonder how the babies are?" Ralmyers,

We will be going on the Triumph 6/19. Are you doing eastern or western? Please fill me in when you return!

Anyway, my husband and I have 1 child, a 4 year old Basset Hound who is SPOILED ROTTEN! I mean, he sleeps in the bed with us and everything. Anyway, he will be spending the week with his grandparents (my parents) and their mixed breed Maggie, whom they rescued at the ripe old age of 4 weeks old from cars in a street! He and Maggie absolutely adore one another, however, we are not adoring the fact that we have to leave the baby for 8 days!! Talk about pampering before and after our trip, just to get him not to pout around the house with those sad eyes. He knows when we are going somewhere because he sits right at the suitcase with his chin resting on his paws with those sad, droopy eyes. Makes you want to stay home!

I have to hide the suitcase. My girls follow me from room to room, just staring at me, when they see me packing. It's pathetic.

We're the normal ones. People without them are just ...missing out.

I'd love to leave the kids at my sisters house and take the dog instead. Our lab is quieter, listens better, takes a bath without fuss, and makes much less mess.

Even if I could bring Sven and Sumo along, I don't know if I would. I don't see them having too much fun being confined in a little cabin, and I would be afraid of them jumping overboard. I also wouldn't want them being in Mexico I don't know what kind of doggie diseases they have out there.

Littlegoo had a good point though, Not much for our gal to do on the ship, and I'd hate to see the stuff she could get into or catch in port. I guess even given the chance to take her I'd opt to leave her with my sister, she is in heaven there, they spoil her rotten and she never wants to come home. http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gifTheresa

Cuevo girl,
You have two Shibas also?! Aren't they the best? I don't know if I could ever own another breed after having them. I love how they have no doggie stink and how they clean themselve like cats. I love their mentality that everything is theirs, and that we don't own them, they own us. I am going to have to put a picture of Sumo and Sven on here.

Does anyone else's cat wake them up by sticking their nose in their eyeball?

I think she likes it when were all gone she has the run of the house to herself!!!!!!! I wish they would have a pet cruise would be sort of neat..I have to say the pictures of the laid back animals was hillarious and cute!! Yes Laura, we'll have to hook up and exchange dog pictures.

I think people who do not have a pet in their life really do not know what they are missing.
They don't judge you, are always there for you, don't care what you wear, how you look or how much money you make. They only want some love and belly scratches in return.

I love my Boston, now if you'll excuse me, I gotta go rub her noggin!

What color is your Basset? Mine is red and white, he's 4 years old. He has this thing about anyone or anything touching his paws...does yours? They say Bassets are funny about them because a lot of them have allergies. He constantly licks and chews between his paws!

ABout people not knowing what they are missing if they don't have a dog.....
People tell my husband and I the same thing about kids, when we say we don't plan on having any. It drives me crazy! http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif
I have been tellling my parents over and over that they need to get a dog ( they haven't had once since our family Cocker Spaniel died 7 years ago) but they have 5 or 6 cats - Ilost count! Every time I tell her that, she starts in on the " You need to have a baybeeeee" routine.
We just don't have the time it takes to raise a kid - our careers are way busy. Our 2 dogs are our kids and you can leave the two of them alone, and they keep each other company and all is fine. I don't need to save all my money for a college education for them, and I'll never have to worry about them crashing my car or getting into drugs...now the cats with their cat-nip are a different thing.
I read somebody joking about their dogs drinking foo-foo water....my boy, Sumo always tries to drink out of my foo foo drinks - Sven on the other hand is scared of alcohol, but Sumo will eat or drink anything - he even eats jalepenos.

Glad I'm not the only one. Hubby and I will miss our kitty so much. Yes, even hubby. We are so attached to her. It was difficult when we went on our first cruise 2 years ago. But I have a couple of friends who take really good care of her, one even stays in the house for a few nights to keep her company. I LOVE the miniature donkey who thinks he's a Clydesdale commercial from the Super Bowl. That's a classic.

Maybe I love it because it reminds me of my older Shih Tzu, who tries to take on every Lab, Rottie and Golden she sees. She doesn't realize that she's an appetizer for them, and guess what? They don't either, because they run the other direction when she starts in.

Oh, I'm going to miss them. If I offer an extra tip, do you think my steward will lick my face and scratch on the door for me in the morning? http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

Little goo -- We always get the blah blah blah, gotta have a baby speech also! My Golden is my baby!
Even though the grandparents love their granddog, they always give us that talk. I start to entertain the idea of a baby, and then I realize how much work it is! I guess they think that Since I am getting closer to 30, the time is near. I just want to be a 20 something DINK.
Although, I think Anna would be fantastic with a baby. She would be so protective and mothering. I could just see her pacing near the crib, and I would not even need a monitor because she would notify me of every little noise!

I am with ya, puppies over babies!
Don't know much about afghans except for they are seriously high maintenance. Check out AKC online -- they have some good info.

Does anyone elses town have a Furry Skurry walk? We are members of the Humane Society here, and every year they have a charity walk where all of the money raised from sponsors of the walk goes to Humane Society. Same sort of idea as a march of dimes walk or something like that. Everyone brings their dog, and yuo walk them. Believe it or not they are all very well behaved and mostly restrained. Last weekend was the walk, and it is always a riot to see all of the different dogs. They have these stations along the way where they have baby pools for the dogs and water stations. It is only a 1.5 mile walk, but very funny. I think I have seen about one of every breed there. You can have pictures taken with your dog and our minor league baseball teams mascot, have your dog micro chipped, plenty of vendors, best doggie costume contest, contest for the dog who looks most like their owner. It is such a good cause I think last year they raised over $30,000 . I am anxious to see the figures this year. Humane Society here is not gov't funded and is also a no-kill facility unlike some of our shelters, so they need all of the help they can get!

I'd love to participate in that walk - I'm right outside of D.C. so I'm sure they would have something like that out here. I'm not sure if I could take my girl Shiba, Sven. She is such an alpha that she get's Doggie anxiety attacks whenever she is around other dogs that are bigger than her. It's sad, we can't take her to dog parks anymore because she starts vomiting, and gets an erratic heart beat. Sumo, the boy is alright, he doesn't have that problem.
I too enjoy the dink life. The husband and I just turned 29, and our 20's are almost over! The kind of jobs we have are very time consuming and can require a lot of relocating. I don't think it's the kind of life for a kid to have to be uprooted all of the time, leaving behind friends, changing schools, etc. Society ( and parents!) put a lot of pressure on couples to have kids. Not everyone is in the position to have them, also, I would be an over-protective Mom and my kids would suffocate. I am such a worry-wart. Everytime one of the dogs eats a bug or an M & M, I freak out thinking they are going to die, and rush them to the vets. ( last time I went to California, I brought back a dried up starfish, and Sven ate it!)
Luckily for my parents, my sister just had a baby, and is planning on another one, now they can leave me alone!!!!!!
