There are those that have been blessed and didn't need travel insurance, as for me I am glad I have purchased the insurance. Before a booked insured cruise I thought I was going to have a simple ear surgery and it ended up being a major deal and I was not able to fly or cruise. We had to cancel the cruise and was able to get our money back without any penalties..Then this last New years we had a cruise booked, flew down the day before sailing only to end up in the emergency room with our toddler that had seemed perfectly normal. We were told that he was not to be going anywhere and was admitted the next day since he seemed to get worse. We had to scramble to get hotel rooms, car rental and change our flights twice. Along with meals all these expenses were reimbursed to us with the medical bills that our medical insurance didn't pay. Its not only about medical bill. I am a travel insurance buyer.

In 1997 I booked my first cruise. Sadly, two days before it was to depart, my younger sister unexpectedly passed away at the age of 37. Needless to say, my mother and I did not go on this cruise. We had the insurance and received a refund on the price of our cruise. Insurance is obtained to protect yourself from the unexpected and unforeseen loss. Each cruiser needs to make the decision that is best for them. Do you choose to accept the risk yourself if there is a cancellation, injury, etc or do you choose to purchase the insurance and transfer the risk to the insurance company? I choose to transfer the risk but that is what is best for me.

January, 2004 I ended up in the er with tia symptoms. After further testing, it was discovered that I had a large brain tumor and emergent surgery was scheduled. We were to cruise on the Legend in March. We got all of our money back except our $600 deposit. We sent Carnival a letter explaining the circumstances...we did not have insurance. They could not refund our cash because of this, however they did give us a $600 credit towards a future cruise! Lucky for us. Even luckier, the surgeon says he got all the tumor!
My point is this...what if this had happened while we were on the ship..at sea? To be evacuated from the ship to a hospital can cost anywhere between $20,000 and $35,000! We usually don't buy the insurance because we figured with all the money we would save, we could pay for another cruise! We did not even think about maybe having to be evacuated due to a health emergency!
We have another cruise booked and have and will always purchase the insurance!
