We are going on a Holland American cruise Dec 23 - Jan 2 from Ft Lauderdale. Does anyone know the regulations for the different ports of call? I really don't want to take a "guided" tour.... Any help is appreciated. mt:)

Much depends on where you are going, but in all cases there are generally private fishing guides with boats & gear available at reasonable prices. Renting a boat without a guide just for yourself is really not an option, if that's what you're asking. I've gone fishing in a number of ports but have never seen where anyone has just rented a boat/gear etc for themselves to go out for a few hours. Even if it were available, which I doubt, it would be a pretty risky venture.

Welcome to the forum, Banjomark. If you are on the Volendam, stop by our roll call thread: http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=286411 .

No fishing off the pier?
I wonder how they'd take to someone fishing off the Promenade Deck?
;)

Brian,

You are probably kidding, but there is a thread going on right now, over in the Carnival board, in which the OP claims that her DH is insisting that he is going to fish from his balcony. Its hard to tell if the OP is serious or not.

Believe it or not I saw a prohibition against fishing off your balcony in my latest Know Before You Go booklet.
Either one of HAL's editors has a sick sense of humor :D (always a delightful quality ;) ), or it's been done.

I'll bet its been done, or at least attempted. I'd hate to be in a balcony below someone trying to fish. People don't realize how high above the water you are and how hard it is to throw something (casting) into the water without having it blow back onto the ship.

That must mean that it's entirely OKAY to fish for small children in the aft-pool off the fantail...

you might try using the same bait while fishing from a dam ship that Randy Quaid used at the damn dam (Vegas Vacation).

BanjoMark, obviously a newbie to this board, asked a simple question about fishing from various PORTS on his Holiday cruise and other than the first response from Duckman, he received sarcastic, condescending remarks about fishing off the ship. All you "veteran" cruisers need to take yourselves down a couple of pegs and realize that no one, even a "banjomark" comes here to be humiliated by asking a sincere question. Pretty common if you ask me.

Gee, did you create a whole new persona just to jump in here and insult people???

Or can you actually point to a posting where the OP was "humiliated" eiter directly or by implication?

The original question was answered completely and thoroughly in the first response. Too bad that the playful nature of some postings after that got your knickers in a twist.

Brian, old son, don't you mean that it's entirely OKAY to fish off the fantail (i.e. troll) WITH obnoxious/noisy/bratty children (as bait)? You'll be sure to catch a lot of swordfish with Jr. on the line.

I know ... I know ... I'm supposed to be reformed ... but, I can't help it ... I still have a naughty sense of humor :D ;) and this topic is just pregnant with the "old" joke!

I do believe that eBay has "Sense of Humor Gears" for auction. May I suggest the "Buy It Now" feature ... you need to get some AWFULLY fast and waiting for the bid to close might take too long.

As RuthC said, the "Know Before You Go" booklet says "Do not fish or crab from the ship at any time and do not fish ashore without a license from local authorities" ... but gives no hint about how you might obtain such a license. Maybe that's why "guides" are needed.
