Help!! Cruise xcld - going to Playa del Carmen?

Hopefully you guys can one deeply disappointed 25th anniversary couple whose cruise (Seven Sea Voyager) was just cancelled. Going to Playa del Carmen on Monday - please help w/questions:

What are best 3 all inclusive beach resorts?
What is the crime situation in PDC - any?
Are the beaches sandy or pebbly?
Is a huge area - if so, what is the nicest part of PDC?

My DH AND I stayed at the Playacar Palace last January. It was very nice. No beach to speak of, but heard it is getting better, as it was still recovering from the hurricane. The resort is only steps away from 5th avenue which is a shopping, restaurant area. It is also next to the ferry dock to Cozumel. The service was great, the hotel very nice. I would go back any time. We are headed to Cozumel 12/16/06---can't wait.
