For this itinerary, I don't think it matters at all. Either side of the ship will give you an awesome view of the canal (or being out on the foreward deck.)

Also...you won't know which lane of the Canal Volendam will be transiting in until you get there.

We have transitted in both lanes and the best (for us) was when we were in the right lane, we had a port side suite with veranda and we transited beside a Princess ship at the same time.

That was terrfic. Great views.

:) I assume that you are doing only a partial transit since you mentioned that you will be on the Volendam in April.

OR are you doing a repositioning cruise?

If you are doing a repositioning cruise from the Caribbean to the west coast, then you want to be on the port side.

:D

Why would you suggest port side? If they are in the left lane of the canal and are port side on the ship, they see only to land /foward and aft ...depending how far forward or aft their cabin is they could have limited views. If they are port side with a right lane transit, it is much better but there is no way to know in advance.

The Only answer to your question IMO is.....there is no predicting which side.
