First, let me make it very clear that I am not the least bit familiar with the different types of wines so I need your help. All I know is that I enjoy a white white that most people consider sweet. Maybe this would be a dessert wine. Not dry definitely. I enjoy Reislings and Piesporter whenever I have sampled them. I enjoy most champagne; however, did not like the one that Zuiderdam had in the Suite last November. Any suggestions? I know most of you wine connoisseurs are laughing about now but you have to start somewhere. What would be good to order on the ship?

We did not know what to order either, but our Wine Steward, after asking a few questions, suggested a Chateau St Michelle Reisling - a Washington State wine. It was so delicious that, when we got home, we got some and make sure we keep a stock of it.

I love dry, oaky wines and many times ask the waiter or wine steward to suggest something when I do not recognize a wine I know I will like. Describe the qualities you like in wine. We have had restaurants bring us samples for us to try prior to our selection! That is probably more than you can expect on a ship, where they would typically sell mostly bottles, but I would definitely ask for help! Let them do their jobs! It will give you a reason to tip them!

I agree that Rieslings are a good choice, but order one that doesn't say "troken" on the label. They're usually dry and highly acidic. An "off-dry" Chenin Blanc or Orvieto may be something to try as well.
With Champagne or other sparkling wines, look for one that's "demi-sec" or "sec" if you want something that's a little sweeter, more fruity, and less yeasty than traditional "brut" or "extra dry" wines. Also, you may enjoy Moscato (sometimes labeled "Moscato d'Asti" or "Asti Spumate") as an alternative to Champagne. My BF and I love its lightly effervescent, naturally sweet flavor on a hot night or after a big meal. It's also low in alcohol, so we don't feel guilty about having an extra glass.
From the wine lists I've seen posted on these boards, you should be able to find a few bottles that will be your style. Your wine steward will be able to help you choose. Cheers!
