View Full Version : Advantage of a Vista ship

I was looking at some of the specials on the Vista class ships. Compared to the other classes of ships, a larger percentage of their cabins are verandahs. To step up from an inside to an outside was $100 extra, and then another $100 to go to a Verandah. So it's only about $200 extra pp to go from an inside to a verandah. However, on my Maasdam cruise, with a much smaller percentage of verandahs, it's about a $500 pp increase.

:)

One other thing to consider on the Vista class ships - the cabins are smaller and most of the verandahs are smaller (only aft ones are larger).

As for pricing, never paid any attention to it as we always book suites.

And we have seen the prices vary many times for the same cruise.

For example, our back-to-back cruises in January on the Westerdam for our suite just dropped a little over $1900.

:D

You have to remember they are 2 different types of ships. Vistas are newer ships and have more verandahs but they are not equal to the verandah cabins on an S Class.

A and B cabins on the S class ships are larger than the typical A,B cabins on the Vista Class.

I look at it differently. In my view, the "A"s and "B"s of the S class ships have been replaced by the "SS" cabins on the V class ships (SS cabins are bigger, with bigger balconeys than the old "A"s and "B"s). The new "A"s and "B"s on the V class ships are just S class "C"s and "D"s with balconeys added; justifying the upgraded name.

You all make very good points that I was not familiar with. But you have to keep in mind that from my perspective I can choose an inside, pay a little more for an outside or a large premium for a verandah on the Maasdam. However on the Vista ships I have the option of paying a little extra for the 'smaller' verandah room or more money for the larger one.

BTW, this is not a complaint, just an observation. Really, I'm trying to look at our budget and justify an upgrade to a verandah. DW would also love it, but she's even cheaper than me.:D

I don't know when you are sailing, but if you are outside the penalty period you can always change to a Vista ship.

The odds of the price of the Verandahs on the Maasdam dropping to only 100 PP more than your cabin are not very good, but miracles do happen.

I was actually just trying to point out that with the greater percentage of balconies one can upgrade to one with less of a cost. We live about 20 minutes from the Norfolk pier so we'll be sticking with the Maasdam. I also doubt that a verandah will drop that much. In fact it wouldn't have to drop nearly that much for me to jump on it like it were a buffet after fasting all day.:D

The biggest advantage to the VISTA class is that it is less expensive to book a cabin with a balcony. We usually travel in inside cabins. A few years ago we had a mini suite on the Amsterdam. WHile it was nice, we could have cruised twice inside for what it cost. So we went back to steerage. Then along came the VISTA class and some incredible pricing and we booked the SS class for the price of a low outside. Not a bad deal.
One recent observation is that although the VISTA class carries a lot more people, it never feels crowded. Having spent a week in Alaska, I came to the conclusion that many people must be spending a heck of a lot of time in their cabins and on their balconies because often dining rooms and the LIDO felt empty.

The Zuiderdam, Westerdam, Oosterdam and the soon to be launched Noordam.

The Vista class ships are the largest in the HAL fleet - named for the four points of the compass.

another point to consider is that the vista class ships tend to target a younger crowd and that inevitably means more children... give me an outside E on an S class with 10 kids aboard, over a verandah on a vista with 100 kids... just MY curmudgeonly view of the world
