Barbados Turtle Encounter

Could anyone give me details on this excursion? I'm having such a hard time booking excursions bc the descriptions are vague..thanks

Basically it is about an 1/2-hour trip on a small boat to an area a couple of miles from the deep-water harbor in Bridgetown. When you get to the area the boat drops anchor and the crew throws some chum overboard to lure the turtles near the boat. The time we went about 6 - 10 small turtles came around the boat and peole then get off in about 12 - 15 feet of water to swim around the with turtles. The guides continue to feed the turtles to keep them around and this goes on for about an 1/2-hour.

My suggestion is to book a tour with Ocean Adventures on either of their Silver Moon ships. This tour includes the turtle encounter, the chance to snorkle at a wreck site and the chance to swim from a beach, plus lunch and open bar. The ship offers a simliar tour, but the ship's tour is a bit more expensive and considerabley more like a cattle call -- 50 - 100 people vs about 10 - 20 people.

This is a wonderful tour! We did this last fall on the "El Tigre" with Captain Nick. All I can say is WOW. There was a very short ride from the terminal to the dock where the catamaran was waiting for us. In a very short time we were all aboard and heading for the turtle site. Although we bring our own gear they provided gear for those that did not.

They took us to their "special" area. Apprarently they feed the turtles here on a daily basis. When we showed up and they began to feed them the turtles came from everywhere. There were a lot of them and it was easy to touch them and have them touch you.

After the turtle encounter we were taken to Paradise Beach. A lovely area where they had water toys available. There was a banana boat, something called a Big Bertha that was a lot of fun. There were supposed to be kayaks also but for some reason they weren't there.

I second the recommendation for the Silvermoon I or II. (www.oceanadventures.bb (http://www.oceanadventures.bb) ). Great ships. They only allow a max of 12 people on the 1, and 18 people on the II. Would be entirely appropriate for a 6 year old - we had one on our sailing that had a great time.
