On Celebrity, no one ate at their assigned table on the first night. That didn't happen until night two. Does everyone eat at their assigned table on the first night on HAL?
Thanks once again for all the help!

Yes, you do eat at your assigned table the first night on HAL.
Hope you enjoy your cruise.

:) Hi Trail46:
From our experience cruising with HAL, yes, everyone ate at their assigned table on the first night.
Contrary to your dining experience with Celebrity, we also ate at our assigned table on the first night on Millennium in April, 2006!

By eating at your assigned table on the first evening, you can decide if you like the table, location, people, etc. If you don't, you can always see the maitre'd and ask to be moved. We have seen quite a few people change tables over the years - including ourselves.

On Constellation in Sept/Oct we went to the Welcome Buffet for lunch, but then went to our assigned table for dinner, with casual attire.:p

Thaqt only happens on Celebrity when you're late leaving port - and it's possible that everyone at first seating isn't yet on board. Certainly on the Infinity last year everyone ate at their assigned table on first night. I'm sure HAL would do the same should sailaway be later than 6 o'clock....

Thanks, everyone. We were late leaving port on the Constellation, so I guess that's why we were all mixed up that first night.

All the times we have left Seward at 8 - 8:30, we were still assigned tables and seating times. No adjustments were made.

We left Puerto Rico on Constellation at 10 and I wondered why we were given open seating. That makes sense as the reason, since people (who might want early seating for the week) were arriving onto the ship in the late afternoon and into into the evening and they would want to eat late that night. I disliked that they did that, since our server could have cared less and was so slow we missed the show so I'm glad someone finally explained to me why they do that. When I asked the waiter, he just shrugged. I guess when they know they're not waiting on the people who will be tipping them at the end of the week, why bother.
