A friend of mine went on a cruise and an experienced elderly gentleman told her of a way he deals with motion sickness. This is what he does: on a piece of paper he draws a stick figure with a light bulb around it and then he stares at it for a few minutes and then closes his eyes and gets the image in his mind and it recenters his balance or gravity in his brain therefore the nausea goes away. He carries the drawing with him all the time so that when he needs it he has it close at hand. My friend tried it and she said it worked! I am going to try it when I go on my cruise in May!:p

Never heard of that one! As strange as it sounds, it seems there is more than just the inner ear that causes motion sickness. According to a medical website, video games, flight simulators, and looking through a microscope also can cause motion sickness; in these cases, the eyes see motion, but the body does not sense it.
So, I guess if you can focus on non-movement you can ease the symptoms.
Interesting. Thanks for posting.

I haven't heard that one either! My mom swears by placing a band-aid over her belly-button. My girlfriend uses it to combat sea sickness as well, and it works for her, too. She even recommended it to some of the crew who were seasick on our last cruise, and they started using it too.
The best recommendation I've had for sea sickness came from one of the dining room stewards on the World Renaissance back in 2000. We were in a storm in the Agean Sea with over 30 foot waves. He told us only to eat heavy food - bacon, sausage, toast etc, and to not drink water because it wasn't as heavy as liquids like coffee. Same thing goes for the food - the grease keeps your stomache settled. It worked!

I watched an episode on Mythbusters on Motion Sickness
and the best thing was ginger, HOWEVER, one man was able to "think" he was getting a medication (not a sugar pill ) and he didnt get sick. The mind is a very power tool and maybe some people can unthink themselves sick??
thanks for the interesting ideas to try.

And is a very real part of science.
The mind is a VERY powerful tool! Use it!
Personally, I just keep a cocktail in my hand at all time...I'm not sure why this one works..... guess my body just figures I'm tipsy!:D

I'd have a back up plan...just in case.

BINGO!
As a sailor I can attest that I've gotten sea sick from time to time. The best solution that I have found is (drumm roll please) Quaker Instant Oat meal. These typically come in a variety of flavors, like Apples and Cinemon, brown sugar and spice, etc. The trick is to mix it thick and not to wash it down. It will stick to your insides like glue, soak up any digestive juices and the sugar will help you feel much better. Once I take some of this, I feel 100% better with no queezyness at all.
I am going to pack a box of this when we do our cruise coming up in March.
Hope that helps,
Sailordude.

Interesting suggestions - I hope that I don't have to try them on my first cruise in September.
