Technically it's a deck and not a balcony for the aft cabins. I think you are correct that it is not available to passengers but I can't speak to the crew being out there. I assume their open area aft is not right outside passenger cabins but I'm not sure of that.

I believe that that deck IS accessible to passengers, and not generally used as a work deck. Usually any decks/areas restricted to crew only are white on the deck plans, not "hashed" like that deck. I haven't been on the Volendam, but it was that way on the Veendam. I believe that there will be few people, passengers or crew, out there most of the time.

I've been out on that rear deck on a couple other HAL ships and it is not a work area. Immediately below it is a work area and there will be steps roped off that go down to that. The possible negatives for you are that there will be people at times outside your cabin and that lower part of your view might be cut off by the rear railing (right word?). There usually aren't many people that go out there and they don't generally stay long. Don't go out when the ship is leaving a port as you'll get hit by huge fumes.

That deck can be traversed by passengers. The deck below is used fro line handling and not a public space.

LoL, it was supposed to be "for" :D . Sorry for the mid life spelling moment:eek: the sentance should read "The deck below is used for line handling and not a public space."

We had cabin 2715 on the Volendam a few years ago. (It is BTW a Handicapped accessible in that it has a shower and has a wide entry hall which makes the whole room a bit bigger. Also you can have a closet door open and your cabinmate can walk past you) There was a sign on the door leading out to the deck outside that indicated that you weren't supposed to use that deck and I believe the stairs that led to it from the lower promenade were roped off. (However some people in our area would go out there despite the sign) The only time we saw crew working there was in the early morning when they would hose off the windows.

2715 is not a HC cabin. It is shower only. The HC one is 2702.
