I checked the Carnival web site last night and did not find Aruba or Curacao listed in any itinerary. I'd be curious to know when and what ship your staffer was on! Maybe it is a seasonal escursion to that part of the Caribbean and not within our timeframe. RCL has it on a full-time basis and I think that'll be the one we take -- if we do a cruise again next year. We'll see -- Vegas is calling louder and louder!!!

Carnival did do 7 day cruises to Aruba/Barbados/Dominica/St.Thomas/San Juan...my cousin has done that itinerary on the Destiny...I think it was in 2005, and I think they also went to Curacao with Carnival ??
I'll be bringing some books too, mainly for the 10 hour flight  !! I recommend Michael Connelly, if you like thrillers..

I do not envy your 10 hour flight. Mine's 2 1/2 hours and seems like forever.

To me, reading on a cruise is like doing your taxes in a strip club. There is nothing wrong with it, I just feel there is a better time and place to do it. :D
No offense but you will not see me reading "War and Peace" at any time during the cruise. I am more entertained by talking to strangers and comparing other peoples back hair. To each his own.
On a side note, my nips just got hard thinking that we are only one month away tomorrow. :D:D:D
Jim after seeing your MYSPACE page I can't see you cracking open "War and Peace" anywhere....maybe an "Archie Comic's" :D hehe actually I found your page very funny.
I am bringing along both of James Patterson's new books, "Sail" and "The Dangerous Days of Daniel X". LUVMEX~ you will like "You've Been Warned", I couldn't put it down.

I'll have to ask him about it. It's been a couple of years since he did the cruise. I suppose they could have canceled the route.

Hi all --
Greetings from Boston! Just booked this cruise and are looking forward to it. It's been a long winter! One thing we are hoping is that compared to our other cruises in the summer, there won't be as many kids running all over the ship raising hell at night! Anyone else from the Boston/New England area here yet?
Best regards --
Steve & Jill
My wife and I will be making our first cruise on this trip and will be celebrating our first anniversary on day 2. We're from Framingham.
I just stumbled over this site doing some trip prep.

Welcome Ryan & wife to the world of CRUISING! You will be like a kid in a candy store... so much to do... so little time. I hope you and your wife will be joining us on Monday (first sea day) at 2:00 for our meet n greet! We are all bringing a small ($5-10) gift bag to trade to others at the MnG. Some have suggested something symbolic of where you are from. In either case I look forward to meeting both of you as well as everyone else I have chatted with on this 'ROLL CALL'.
If you have any questions about the cruise..these folks here are good sources of info for your cruise. DON'T hesitate to ask.
See you in around 30 days!

Welcome Ryan!
You will love it. My husband and I will be celebrating our 5th anniversary on the 6th. He wanted to make sure that we sailed away on our actual anniversary.... :o
As for length of flights, ours is l o o o n g too. Plus with lovely Delta, we now stop 2 times and have long layovers at each stop..... I am a terrible flyer (getting better) but usually I am too wound up to read or watch the movie.

lol, kinda true actually. The last two books I read front cover to cover was Dennis Rodman's autobiography and a book by Sylvia Browne. I just don't like the solitude that reading a long book puts you in. I like conversation, action, instant gratification. That might change when I get older, but for now I prefer the company of others. Especially on a cruise with so many different people from different places all on one ship. Eat, Drink and be merry.

Jim--I read on the plane ride and the short while wating at the hotel for transfer to port. Rarely read on the ship!!!!!
Deb-I have a 10 hour flight, which includes a layover in Toronto....joy of joys....Alas, if my TA would have done his job right I would be flying out at 3:45 on United and able to do a tour post cruise....nope, he didn't call to say yes to the deviation.....so red eye to Miami and a early flight home (even though the United flight gets me home at 10:30 instead if the 9:15ish Air Canada flight).

Hi Ryan!
Welcome aboard and to the group! Congratulations on your anniversary! We were originally hoping to celebrate ours again at sea on 8/24 but I got bumped out of the week and had to settle on this week. No complaints though!!! It'll be nice to be at sea without the hoards of kids running all over the ship as we've experienced during our past cruises. BTW, you'll LOVE the cruise experience! We're flying out on Delta (I think it's DL 1421 leaving Logan at 0700) the day we sail and flying non-stop into FLL. I hope we run into each other!

Hi Elaine --
Looking forward to hearing the report from him. A ten hour flight is long, no doubt about it. My longest flight was in 1979 flying from JFK to Tokyo, a 14+ hour non-stop on a Pan Am 747-SP. Tokyo was our intermediate stop en route to Peking where we spent a week shooting a concert with members of the the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Peking Central Philharmonic Orchestra. It ws the first time in more than 25 years that the PCPO played Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, and what a trip! It was Christmas week and it was bloody cold, especially when we took a trip to the Great Wall. Not even five or six layers would shield us from the biting winds. But at least we did not have any issues with the cameras and we shot some excellent video. Coming back to reality was 30 hours in transit, on two hours sleep after a 20-hour day, flying Peking-Shanghai-Tokyo-New York-Boston. I hopped a taxi at Logan Airport, told the driver where to take me, and fell fast asleep in the back of his cab before we left airport property. I couldn't wait to take a real shower when I got back home that New Year's Eve. But seeing the video from Beijing now brings back so many fond memories. I can't wait to get back there -- as a tourist this time!
Three weeks later I had to fly to San Francisco and the person sitting next to me was whining for about an hour on how long the flight was. After I couldn't take it much longer, I shut her up real fast when I told her of my China trip and how long those flights were!!! She didn't make another peep about the flight times!:D

My birthday was back in May and I just finally ordered my present...
Hopefully it will get here before we leave...
I have been wanting a new camera for a long time now and after doing months of research, I finally decided on a Canon Powershot SD 1100IS. Hopefully it was a good choice. My old camera is 1st generation digital, a Kodak 3.1 megapixel. The thing is HUGE! Thought it was finally time to upgrade. Anyone else have this camera? What do you think?

I bought a Canon S5-IS last fall and Love it! My old A70 quit on me and I just replaced it with a Canon A590-IS. Both are 8 Mpxls and serve different purposes. Just make sure you have enough hi-capacity/high speed memory cards for it. If you receive it in time I'd love to compare it with the S5.

My first digital camera was a Pentax Optio 30 3.1 MP in July 2004. I upgraded to a Canon A540 5MP in October 2006 and upgraded it to a 8MP Canon A720IS a few months ago. I also bought a Olympus Stylus 770SW (shockproof, crushproof, freezeproof, and WATERPROOF!) 7MP in July of last year (no plans to upgrade that for a while yet). Yes, I know, two digital cameras and four digital cameras in a four year period...yup.....I also just bought a Canon HG10 HD hard drive videocamera (40GB). I still have my Canon ZR800 miniDV still too......

Hey everyone!
This is my first cruise and I am known to seriously overpack for every trip I go on, so can you guys give me some advice? What things do we really not need? Teresa thinks that we need to bring beach towels, do we? They take up a lot of room. Are there things that you have found that we should bring? I am trying to finish packing for this trip, and I have another trip the weekend before this one, so I am a little stressed out right now.

You can use the ships towels...what do you like to do during the day? If you spend all day by the pool...alll you need for that day is a swimmy suit. There are washing machines on board, so you can always do a load mid-cruise, I have found its better to underpack, leaves more room for all the stuff you buy shopping. I always say pack half the clothes you think you need and twice the amount of money. Always bring : sunscreen, sunglasses, at least 2 swimsuits, a couple of dressy outfits, a couple of casual outfits, and a lets party attitude:D

SandyToes--you should have smacked your hubby upside the head and said BUY THIS ONE!!! I love it, it is awesome. It takes great underwater pics and above water too!!!!!
GCL-It is rated for up to 33 feet of water and for 60 minutes. The only downside to the camera is the 60 minutes, but I am going to test it at Half Moon Cay to see if it can go for longer if you take it out and just rinse it and check the contact points. It says to let it dry for a few hours, but if you dry it with a towel it is good enough!!!!!

Is anyone here going to the Captains party and the past guest party? I was wondering what the dress code was for the two events. And who in their right mind would not go and not get the free drinks?
NIPPLE UPDATE: Today I got 3 pairs of swim trunks on sale and immediately thought about just floating in Half Moon Cay. Needless to say, my nipples promptly responded by standing at full attention. I even tested them out by hanging a hat on the right one, and a hoodie on the left one. It was a complete success. :D:D:D:D:D

I definitely plan on going to both parties! The dress code I have used is formal for Captain's Party, since I think it is same night as first formal night anyways. The return guest party is more for jeans and dress shirt, but dress up if you like. FYI, the drinks they bring around are only a few different types (2 types of wine, whisky sours, screwdrivers, etc.), but you may go up to the bar and ask for a drink to be made of your choice (Capt & Coke or whatever you like). I know they do not serve anything you want, but it's more of a selection than what comes on the trays.

I know I'm definitely not one to be of much help....I already plan on over packing. LoL. I have a beach towel set out. Whether I pack it will depend on how much room I have in my suitcase. Comfy shoes go without saying as well as swimsuits. I'm bringing three suits to give them plenty of drying time between wear. The rest really depends on what you're doing and what you're comfortable with.
I'm bringing my flat iron but not a blow dryer, as the cabin has one of them. Since you're staying in a cabin with your friends, you guys can share shampoo, etc. So that will ease up some space.
Is it down to 28 days now?!? Holy moly it's getting close!!!!

Okay are we talking formal as in a formal GOWN or formal as in just a really nice dress? I’m really not wanting to have to pack a long gown for me to pull out of my bag just to have a stroke because of all the wrinkles (remember I’m the one with OCD when it comes to wrinkles!) lol
Holy crud!!!! Did that counter just say 28 DAYS???? Wow….yea…at this point I will politely decline to comment on my “nips” (we’ll leave that topic for my lil brother Jimmy) but I did just get goose bumps which all girls know grows hair in a freggin INSTANT!!! Sheesh…if this keeps up, shaving will be a moot point the morning of the cruise because I’ll have an inch on my legs by the time I board the dang ship!!!
Okay back to the Captain Party…ohhh I’m crossing my fingers that Capt and Coke is one of the options….it’s one of my favorite drinks (Parrot Bay is the BEST)!!! Second favorite is a Long Island but one (or three) too many of those and Tina will be bumping into those big hand pillars in the disco! Is it just me or did they seem to pop up everyone in that place??? LOL Oh I can see it now…”who’s that poor girl with the bruised nose/forehead and extremely hairy legs out there on that light up dance floor doin’ the Staying Alive John Travolta dance??? Past guest party--always go to that!!! Free booze, even though the drinks are smaller, it's free!!!!!!
Captain's party--my dressiest clothes aren't good enough for the captains party..I usually pass on the Captain's party.....
I think having the Olympics on until late August will make time go faster, which is good.....I want time to pass faster.
Is anyone ready to go now, or do you still have some last minute things to get...I got em all and am just waiting to pack it in bags and go!!!!!
As for checking and rechecking--oh ya, I have a checklist for my checklist!!!!!
I still managed to forget one very important item last February---the case for my glasses. I ended up using my toothbrush case to keep em safe!!!

Carnival has seriously relaxed their dress code, ballgowns are few and far between on formal nites. You can wear a nice dress and be just fine. I HATE to dress up....not that I am a bum, but I am on vacation:p I wear a cocktail dress, but change after parties, pictures and dinner:cool:
Yes.... I'm one of those running around informally dressed on formal nights!
One tip I do have is bring those super large zip lock bags. Pack your dirty clothes in them, if your luggage is to heavy you can just pull them out and carry them on. They have great handles, and if your luggage isn't over weight, your dirties are all together:eek:
Are you talkin John Travolta "pick the apple...put it in the basket type dancin? I may just have to stay up late to join ya!!!!!!!

Hmm...I'm not really sure what it's called...lol...but you may join me if you like...picking apples....put them in the basket...do whatever you wish...it's VACATION BABY!!!! :-D Woooo hooo!!!!

This will be our eight Carnival cruise and I just wanted to tell all the newbie ladies out their that they will feel comfortable in whatever they choose to wear as you will see everything from black slacks with a nice tank to dressy gowns on older women and prom dresses on the oldest teens. Don't skip the Captain's party because you don't feel dressed up enough, it is held not held in a grand ballroom, just the same room where all the shows are held. You can trust me, you will have fun. If you are worried about wrinkles, some of those stretchy mico fiber type dresses will not wrinkle at all or any of the jersey type fabrics. Our daughter just got married in June, so I've recently had enough opportunites to dress up formal so I am taking cocktail length this cruise, nothing long at all and one isn't very dressy at all but will be fun enough for formal night because it fits well and is comfortable for dancing. Hope this helps a little with packing.
Also, we never bring towels even when we have driven to the port. We've had no towel problem whatsoever and always have nice, fresh clean beach towels when we need them. There is usually a whole group of blue
Carnival towels on whatever beach you end up. Makes you feel like less of a stranger there.

I like to dress up, it's kinda fun and I don't get to do it at home very often. Last year I wore a red dress, the kind that's made out of the guazy type material that doesn't wrinkle so it rolled into my suitcase. I plan on bringing that one again for the second formal night. For the captains party this time, I got this awesome dress at Ross of all places for $27. It's a turquoise halter dress and made out of the same material but with a satin accent in the same color, just like this one only turquoise.

Also as for the time and place of everything, you will get a copy of Carnival's newspaper the Capers in your cabin every day. On that will be a list of every single activity that day as well as the time and place. And of course there will be announcements I am sure about the Captains party and the really big stuff like the midnite buffet. OMG I can't wait!

Oh, I love your dress! The color and cut is fantastic! I bet you look great in it!
Right now, I have a black dress with a red shawl for the fanciest of what I deem to be the fancy nights. I too have several of the dresses that don't wrinkle. Talk about a God send! :)
And who was I telling about being done with my shopping... Yeah, I hit JC Penney and it's 70% off sale today and bought two more pairs of shorts and a few tanks. Sheeesh!
Speaking of the Olympics...did anyone catch the Opening Ceremonies? What a spectacular event. The technology involved was just breathtaking! And to watch it in HD...fantastic!

Ohh that’s just Tina…give her another long island and she’ll forget about how bad she looks!” LOL
Yipppeeee….I can’t wait guys!!! Oh…time to shop…so much to do in so little time!!! :-)
Hi Tina!!!
Loved your self-assessment of the party!! Just watch out for supporting columns on the dance floor! Thay can give you a nasty welt on your forehead! They hurt like hell too!
FYI, we both brought formal wear on our first cruise in '05 and we were definitley in the minority although we did see a few others in tuxes and gowns. Since then I've just brought a suit preferring to leave my tux at home, and Jill has brought a cocktail dress. Last year on the Triumph, even suits and cocktail dresses were not that popular and most just wore dockers and regular short-sleeved shirts. I may have seen a half-dozen tuxes last year, if that. I'm probably going to take a suit or just a sports jacket and slacks, and Jill will be in a lightweight cocktail dress. Packing LIGHT is the name of the game these days!
I'm not going to comment on anyone's "nips," Sheesh! This thread is going to hell in a handbasket thanks to Jim! But I will admit to secretly packing a half-dozen or so nip bottles in my suitcase. Now those nips are perfect!!! They'll pass thru thre airport xrays without problems. Nothing like a good "nip" before hitting the sack at oh-dark-thirty!!!:D
The Captain's party is one NOT to be missed! There's usually some pretty good entertainment and sometimes there's finger-food, and as one mentioned earlier, free booze!!! (But they're usually real sweet drinks in small glasses)
Gee --four weeks and counting!!!
As for the Olympics -- yes, it was a spectacular opening. Probably one of the nicest I've seen in many years. I've loved the video shot from around the city. It brought back so many fond memories -- smog included -- even from 29 years ago!
OH! One more thing folks -- Bring a couple of those small bottles of Purel or other hand-sanitizers. Only Royal Caribbean had that stuff almost everywhere your turned. We were surprised last year that the Triumph had nothing and we were glad we brought our own. You never know...!

Hi Elaine....
A while back, around the holidays, we bought a steam iron called "ItalSteam." It is made of a sturdy plastic and only blows steam. It has no heating element as a regular iron does and you don't need a flat surface to use it to remove wrinkles. It removes wrinkles while still on a hangar. We picked it up at a kiosk at one of our local shopping malls and works on any fabric and does not burn! I think we paid less than $50.00 for it and it is quite lightweight. They've got a web site for information at www.italsteam.com (http://www.italsteam.com). It works similar to the "Tobi" steam wrinkle remover that is advertised on TV infomercials. We plan on taking it with us this year.
You're going to bring a beach towel? I thought Carnival provided two in each stateroom? They're very soft and comfortable. BTW, we've found our bathing suits dry quite nicely overnight, but it could be material-dependent. We only bring one each to save space and weight. We've started to put our packing list together -- we've generally overpacked for each trip we've taken over the years, but these are different times and we're going to "try" to pack light.

I forgot to comment on the Olympics. I watched the ceremonies with my 3 year old son and it was truly amazing!! He ran around the living room saying Limpis Limpis Mom Limpis! It was really cute. I can't belive how perfect the Tai Chi and drummer guys were. Then during the nations parade I couldn't believe how many I have never heard of. Yes, I agree with Misguided that I am glad they are on to pass the time. By the time they are done, we are almost there!!
Hope everyone's having a great weekend! I think we're going shopping again tomorrow.....

I know, I thought I was done for tonight....
That steam thing sounds like a good idea. I use Downy Wrinkle Release and it comes in a travel size bottle and works REALLY well especially when you hang your stuff in the bathroom during showers...
Also, they give you towels everyday and you can take them ashore with you. I am not bringing any this time. Take up too much room....

Steve - Thanks for the steamer info. I'll pass it on to Tina as she is the one with OCD and wrinkles. ;)
As for the beach towel, I set it out when I first started packing because I couldn't remember if Carnival provided towels on the excursions...of course now that I discovered CC, I know that they do and probably won't bring it.
And yes, I am wide awake at 4:30 a.m. I just re-watched Phelps and his individual medley. Man, can that guy swim!

By the way, Ladies, the gift shop on board sells pashmina type wraps and evening bags in tons of colors for $10 each. (at least they have on the last 5 or so cruises I've been on) so if you need accessories, just wait until you get on the ship and match up your clothes. I think by now I have every color I could possibly need but you never know. It is usually freezing while watching the show in the evening and I have seen people wearing towels, bathrobes and blankets in the afternoon during tour talks, etc. so the wraps definitely come in handy especially since alot of evening wear has bare shoulders.

OK... you all may think I am nutz to bring this up, and I certainly don't want to rush through the actual cruise ... but I have 2 foolproof methods to extend the cruise. It always seems at the end of a cruise I wish it could last another week. Nothing beats the escape a cruise offers. OK..here are the 2 ways to extend your cruise;
1- stowaway! Hide in the cabin bathroom, then sneak into one of the public restrooms and then make your way to the Lido for lunch. Now you may end up in a 'special' cabin Carnival saves for stowaways, but .... think
of all the attention (from Security) you will get!
2- Upon return to your home, make sure to do the following:
a- place a chocolate treat on your pillow,
you can also take a towel and roll it up and pretend
your cabin steward made a snake for you!
b- take all your cereal boxes, fruit and plates (forks , spoons too)
and leave them out on the kitchen counter... your morning
buffet.!
c- get dressed for dinner, go to your table and sit and wait for your
server. Once you realize there is no server, tell yourself you
chose to eat at the self cook n serve buffet for dinner!
d- when you leave your home the next day, tell yourself you are
taking the 'work' excursion!
*** Danger ***
Be aware that as you haven't had to do laundry in a week, this could be a dangerous habit to break! Same with making the bed & cleaning the home!
Also, the cabin card does not work at the grocery store!
See you all onboard!

Doc,
I like the stowaway idea, B2B for free. Do you think the cruise line would mind? LOL:D
All this talk about the parties and dresses, here's my take. I like dressing up for formal night. It's really nice to see everyone looking elegant. Yeah it's my vacation and I do change after all the hoopla is over, but I think it's fun. Call me crazy.
And you've convinced me to leave the beach towel at home. We booked our flight before the checked baggage charge came about so I don't have to worry about that but I am trying to get a handle on packing for the future trips. We're thinking next year about doing a short cruise out of Mobile coz thats only a 10 hour drive for us.
LESS THAN 4 WEEKS TO GO!!!!!!!:D :D :D

Kathy--I sure hope they do sell the pashminas. I bought two on the Conquest and the one I brought to work (it has come in very handy!) suddenly grew legs and walked away close to two weeks ago...One day it was on the back of my chair, the next day it was gone....DANG!!!!
Olympics--I am watching CBC's (cuz I'm Canadian and CBC is the one who's showing it) and they are on from 4am-10am, and then from 4pm-1am (3am on four of the days). I won't have to worry about not having anything to watch...CBC is really good, they show anything and everything (sports wise) regardless if there is a Canadian participating or not...Heck, they showed the China/US basketball game earlier today. We have TSN (the sports network) that is showing additional Olympic team sports (soccer, basketball, soft/baseball.....)....Since I upgraded my 27" tv and standard digital box for a 52" LCD and a HD cable box I can watch the Olympics on in HD....woohoo!!!!!!

Color me officially excited.
Last September when my wife and I were on our honeymoon, I started to go through scuba certification. I was able to complete all the open water and confined water dives but wasn't able to do much of the book work.
Then when we got back, between all the traveling I did for work from October thru January, plus buying a new house, I wasn't able to follow up on all the course work I needed to do.
Until this weekend that is. This morning I finished all my practical exams and got my temporary certification card! I'm looking forward to logging a dive or two on this trip.

Speaking of laundry...
I always find it best to bring a travel pack of Tide and a few dryer sheets when cruising. The ones on the ship aren't a bad price but why create the hassle of having to go to the Purser's Desk to get detergent if the machine is broke in the Laundry Room (which has been the case the first cruise I went on) or you don't have quarters to begin with. It is always nice to pack lighter with the intention to wash some clothes for an additional wear on the second half of the cruise. This will make getting to the cruise and your week a lot less hectic.

So, i'm officially a jerk. Cherie and I are still coming to the MhG on Monday afternoon but I live in Massachusetts and my sister is from Conneticutt, not Massachusetts. (Try convincing her that she can just bring the CT gift and say that her brother is a jerk is OK rather than me updating the guest list is impossible)
So Tom is from Massachusetts and Cherie is from Conneticut!
So any good plans on excursions? We're think about just hanging out and drinking (heavily) at HMC and then doing either "Dune Buggy Adventure" or "Reefs and Rays" in Grand Turk and still trying to think of what to do in Puerto Rico and St THomas.... In St THomas we're thinking of doing the Paradise POint Tramway and then heading to Red Hook to go to Duffy's Love Shack (gotta get a fishtank drink (or 2...or three)...
Does this mean that Cherie and I will have the superlative of "Most likely to be Drunk and miss the tenders back to the Boat?"

How many are flying in a day early and what hotel are you staying at?
Kathy0418
August 11th, 2008, 11:33 AM
We are flying in Friday. We always go in a day early so it is stress free and adds a day to our vacation and we can get on the ship early. We are probably staying at a Hampton in Aventura (N. Miami Beach) because my mom lives nearby and I can see her that afternoon and again the next morning. Plus there is a great little Italian restaurant that I have to go to even if I am only in Miami a few hours. They have garlic rolls, dripping in oil and garlic that I can't get in Texas so I have to get my fix whenever I am there. I noticed some really good deals at the Miami airport on Hotwire but I don't want to drive back and forth.

Uggggh... I hear ya. That's similar to the problem we were having with Delta. We had a red eye that connected in LAX from Reno and then flew non stop to FLL and got us in early friday morning. Well, Delta's little connection airline Express Jet from Reno stops flying from Reno on Sept. 2nd. (Couldn't they wait two more days????) So now we leave Reno first thing Friday morning (just in time to watch the hot air balloons take off just like they did the morning we left on our honeymoon) and we are flying into Miami now. Our rental car was booked in FLL so that got cancelled. Luckily I wanted to be in Miami to see the ships come into port in the morning so that's where we booked our precruise hotel. We are staying at the Courtyard Miami Downtown. Now that we don't get in till after 7:00 pm we will probably just go to dinner and to bed!
We are keeping our fingers crossed that Delta doesn't cancel or change our coming home flights, we are renting a car and going to FLL for 2 days post cruise and flying out of FLL to come home.... This is the last time for us for a while unless we sail out of LA or San Diego. Too much stress!!! I am going to need a vacation after this vacation!! :p

LuvMex--you may have a plethera of airlines, but they all seem to be chargin more or cancelling flights....I feel a little safer living in Canada and having a limited choice, at least where I live, for flights to Florida.....I pretty well have two choices to get to Miami quick...United or Air Canada...I'd fly with Air Canada as they have a safe record and Pearson is a big airport, but Air Canada has a terminal to itself. Alas, I wanted a United flight that left here at 12:45 and connected to Miami through Chicago, sadly, I had one of those TA's who had more important clients and he FORGOT to call Carnival back and say YES to the flight deviation....I told him excitedly and emphatically YES!, but he didn't do it....Hence, I fly out at 12:20am to Toronto where I have 3.5 hours to kill before a 9:30 flight to Miami....I'll be pretty tired, but I am travelling alone, so I can't curl up and sleep for a hour or two (without all my belongings disappearing on me while I snooze...)....

did anyone use hotwire for their hotel room the night before. Once, a couple of years ago I did a search for hotwire and found out somebody had just gotten the ft lauderdale embassy suites for $57 and went there immediately and found the $57 rate and took my chances and we got the embassy suites as well. that is at least $100 off the regular rate. It was great for a family of four.
I was trying to use search but it went down. I'll try again later. I'd like to stay near North Miami Beach but if I can get a really awesome deal, I'll drive back and forth Saturday morning.

$57 is a great deal! Congrats! I actually used all three sites. We need a place to stay here in Reno the night before we fly so we don't have to pay parking at the airport and I got the Grand Sierra Resort for $22 on hotwire. Then pre cruise in Miami Downtown I got Courtyard Marriot for $68 on EasyClick Travel then for post cruise I got the Bahia Mar in FLL for $72 so not too bad. :p

Hi everyone!
I found out something over the weekend that I didn't even think about....a friend of mine went to Puerto Rico last August and she told me that when she was there that they had HUGE mosquitoes. So I am now packing some of the OFF toweletts (sp?) for all the islands just in case.
Time is moving so slow right now! We are flying in on the 5th and it is only 24 days away, but not soon enough...I need a vacation!!!!
Thank you for all the suggestions on what to bring, keep them coming :) I am already overpacked and I haven't even started packing yet :D

Oh gotta have the shoes!! Seriously half of my suitcase is shoes. Gotta have a different pair for each dress and what not.
Anyway, enjoy the following story about shoes and packing.....:p
Two years ago before the airlines started charging for extra bags and stuff, my cousin, aunt grandma and I went on a 3 dayer to Ensenada. My aunt and cousin had never cruised before and my aunt brought I kid you not 30 pairs of shoes! For 3 days!!! Plus all four of us were in one room together and it wasn't a suite either. Her suitcases took up the entire room.... Thank goodness it was only 3 days. So she finds this pottery in Mexico she just has to have and when we get back to LAX to come home, her suitcases are overweight, imagine that. So there we are on the floor at LAX re arranging her entire suitcases into mine and my grandma's just so she wouldn't be over weight. We managed to get the one suitcase down to 49# and the other one was at 57#. I think the SW people felt sorry for her and let it slide with out paying the overweight charge.....
Happy packing everyone!!

Hi Tina --
I'll have to show this post to Jill -- You and her will be able to see 'eye-to-eye'!!!:D As for the iron, yes, it was a bit steep, but when we're travelling it's nice to be able to steam out wrinkles quickly. BTW, we're up on the 10th deck somewhere in the center on the starboard side. We've never been up this high in the past and hopefully we won't experience the pendulum effect.
I have been told I have excellent distraction skills. :p
ROTFL!!! Too much information Elaine!!! ;)
The past week I've been busier than a one-armed paper hanger. There just aren't enough hours in a day lately and 3-1/2 weeks to go before we sail and I have at least five weeks worth of work to get done, with a good percentage of it outside. Unfortunately, we've had too much rain which just further backs everything up.
We've printed out our packing lists and are trying to cut back on the non-essentials. Not an easy thing to do these days. We'll start packing a few days prior to departure and hopefully, with the lists, we'll get everything we need and not leave anything out.
Here's a tip for anyone who wants it -- If you have your daily newspaper wrapped in a plastic sleeve to protect it from weather, keep a bunch of those sleeves and put your shoes in them. Stuff your shoes with cotton socks first to save space. This way, if your favorite shoes are, shall I say, 'aromatic' the plastic sleeves will not allow the 'flavor' to permiate to any adjacent clothing.
Ahhh, 3-1/2 weeks... can't wait!! I'm already fried and desperately need to decompress.

Don't know if this is true of every Wal-mart or not but I saw a steamer in the luggage section. I'm fairly sure it was under $20. You might want to take a look coz I'd hate to see a girl fight on the Verandah deck. Of course most of the men would enjoy that.....they're just sick:D

I tried our Wal-Mart here in Ohio and they had one, but it looked very similar to a regular iron and I thought with the “no irons” rule, they might snatch it from me. But yea…you’re right…it was in the low $20’s…it sure would have been nice. :-) If all else fails, I’ve been looking at some of the other threads and the consensus is the “Jiffy” Steam Travel Iron works wonderfully. It runs for $69 which is a bit steep but I’m thinking that once I get home, I can always eBay it! ORRRR it might make a nice Christmas gift for one lil brother who I’m sure wants to take his favorite 2 year old niece for at least one weekend a month for his loving sister so she can have a dating life….(hint nudge hint) lol MUAH!!!!

Deb--you'll have to post the info on the MnG a Set 2 or 3 to remind us all!!!! As for the bartender, I will be brining me DOD cup to get me something cold and fruity!!!!!
Shoes--I prefer going barefoot...I can't for the life of me find a nice pair of shoes that fit--thanks granny Soucy (I inherited her wonderfully wide feet, and mine are wider!!!). If I need shoes I need to buy them 1.5 sizes larger and usually that means one of the shoes is too long and floppy....can't help having one wider foot and one longer foot....UGH!!! However, I can usually get sandals or flip flips one size larger and they work out well, but all other shoes, I go to size 11's......
Suitcases-I'm bringing em out next weekend and won't toss clothes in until the next weekend 29-31 when I do colored laundry. I've only got two days at work so I will end up wearing anything from my closet that isn't going with me. I'll have most of my carry on health/beauty stuff packed on that weekend too and just have the stuff I use on a daily basis to pack the afternoon of the 4th (I leave for the airport at 9:30pm for a 12:20am flight).....My cat tends to take over and bed down in my suitcases. He loves them, so I don't mind it when all my clothes have brown tabby persian for all over em.....

Hi Elaine....
Not having checked the electronic paperwork on Carnival's web site, I cannot comment on it -- yet. I'll take a look at it over the weekend. But it is the same package we've received for past cruises with all the tickets, baggage ID tags, legal stuff, and any excursion tix you may have pre-purchased. We still have to decide how we're going to get from FLL to the pier, and may use the Carnival shuttle busses again as we did last year. We'll decide sometime next week I guess.
Are we still going to meet up with Doc under the Jumbotron at the bar on Saturday? Whaddya say Doc?
I'll take a walk over there after the buffet lunch.
BTW, we're going to be on the Panorama Deck, Cat 8E balcony. Our TA got us a nice upgrade this year as this will be our third Carnival cruise in the past four years.
Now, as for the party at the MnG, why not? Isn't that part of why we're all there anyway?
Three weeks and counting!

Steve, YES.. I plan on heading over to the bar under the jumbotron after lunch. I will need to make sure my Mom is settled and ok before I abandon her! LOL! I HOPE SEVERAL OF YOU SHOW UP THERE...
I will be traveling a very long distance, and will be exhausted when I get onboard since I am coming from West Palm Beach. That's an hour and a half drive!!!!
My upgrade was given to Mom so she gets the balcony (yes I am a good son, hehehe) and I have an outside cabin all the way in the back (aft) of the ship *7204. This works out fine for me as there is an exit door right outside my cabin and I can go right to the back of the ship to chill.
I decided to bring the poker chip set and have already arranged them for 10 to play a mini tournament with 5000 chips each as well as cash game chips for possible $1 - $2 game. I am not bringing my copaq cards (professional grade) as the need really isn't there. But when we play, we have 2 decks of cards, so 1 can be shuffled while the other is dealt. Maybe we will get 10 to play?? I guess we can schedule games when we meet.
Does anyone play volleyball? I saw they have a vball court and really enjoy the game??? Otherwise, I will chill at the pool (jacuzzi) most days.
Ok, see you all soon! (3 weeks or so)

My daughter and I wear the same size shoe so usually we have twice as many to choose from and we decide who is wearing which pair on what night so we don't have to double up. This is actually what Angie and I are doing, we wear the same size. It comes in very handy on trips like this and when we have something where we don't want to buy something new that we would only wear one time. :)
as for cats...I used to have 8 Persians and I was constantly covered in fur....I just learned to shut the suitcase after I put something in it...you just have to be fast than them (it is hard, but with practice, it is achievable :p )

Hi rjw0211 -- It's essentially the only card you'll need on the cruise. It will be given to you when you first check in with the hoards of people at the Miami pier. It's your boarding pass, ID card, and credit card all rolled up into one. The first time you enter the ship, they'll take your picture and it will pop up on the computer display every time you card out or card in from a port, which you will always have to do. This way they know exactly who is off the ship and who is still on it. Also, every time you buy something anywhere aboard the ship, at the bar, coffee shop or in any of the stores, you'll show the SnS card and your purchase will be billed to your account. So, don't lose the card!!! You'll keep the card at the end of the cruise for your memories. Hope this helps!

A Sign and Sail card is your "lifeline" on the ship. It's attached to your credit card information and it's your room key and it's the only way to get on and off the ship.
Sorry Steve. Hadn't refreshed my page when I posted so I wasn't aware that you had answered the question. Therefore, ignore my answer, Steve explained it much better anyway

Elaine,
About the docs, usually they only give you one or the other. Looks like Steve opted for paper docs. If you can see your docs online and print them off, most likely you opted for e-docs and will not get a set in the mail. This is the first time we got e-docs instead of paper docs, and I kind of like being able to print off the docs as soon as final payment is made, but on the other hand, I like getting them in the mail too. It makes it that much more real......

So, don't lose the card!!! You'll keep the card at the end of the cruise for your memories. Hope this helps!

Elaine,
About the docs, usually they only give you one or the other.
Time for panic mode to start setting in.... 3 weeks to go!!!:D :D :D
Thanks SandyToes! I kinda figured that, but it's been five years since I cruised so I wanted to make sure.
Misguided, what's a DOD cup?
Steve, I agree on the partying I'm just a tad bitter over the fact that they couldn't at least give us T-shirts or keychains. Just a bartender so we can rack up our bill. But hey!! I'm still ready to party!
Deb - I think it's the Drink of the Day cup? It is kinda chitnzy that they couldn't give us anything but provide us a way to make them money. LoL!
So we don't have to have our passports or anything else with us to leave or reboard the ship? I don't want to screw this up...I can see me being the one being thrown into the Puerto Rican jail needing to be bailed out or something :D
Beckie (?) (I'm sorry...I'm usually much better with names.) - there is much discussion on whether you need to bring your passport off the ship in the general cruise question threads. From what I've read, it's favored toward bringing your passports with you off the ship. The theory being that if you missed the boat, you'll need it. I can't remember what we did the last cruise I took.
What's everyone's thought on that issue in here?

Will bars accept that as proof of age for drinks? Hopefully I look 35 (I can't believe I actually just said that) and wouldn't get carded anyway. It is amazing the things I hadn't thought of regarding this trip, and I thought I over analyzed everything :p

I booked this cruise back in December of last year. It is finally here. My husband and I will be joining all of you, and we are looking forward to a wonderful cruise. This will be our third Carnival cruise. Did the Triumph 2 months after 9/11, and did the Valor in 2005 with our daughter. This year we will be celebrating our 19th anniversary. I joined the forum a little late, so I look forward to reading all the exciting conversations going on. See Ya Soon!!!

Hey welcome dslizzy!
About passports, we usually take the copies with us and leave the actual passports in the safes in the cabins. We do bring our driver's licenses with us though in port because sometimes you need both the S&S card and a form of ID. I would much rather lose a DL than a passport. Never had any problems doing it that way, plus 2 of our ports are US anyway... As of now passports arent needed in the Caribbean to get back home if you get left there somehow.... I would just worry way too much taking the actual passports with us especially if we were doing a lot of activity or swimming.... Just a thought.;) Now getting back on the ship in Puerto Vallarta was a bit scary though, they had dudes with assult rifles there at the gangplank

I've never been carded on a cruise before and I look way young for my age, I get carded here at home at the grocery stores all the time! Nick never does, and he's younger than me. The S&S cards come up with your age when the Bartenders scan them so unless they really have a question, you shouldn't be asked to see ID. But like Tina said they would get a heck of a tip!:p

Passports are essential if your flying to another country. I do think they would expect americans to have a passport to fly to and from the Caribbean...It's happening everywhere....
DOD cup-drink of the day cup. You get more in there, so I tend to bring it and get it refilled a few times a day...I don't drink much, so a few drinks a day is all I need....

Hi Elaine and the gang....
Heck, it looks like we're having a virtual party already!!! Nothing like starting EARLY!!!
I'll throw in my two cents worth on the passport issue.... We always keep it with us when we're off the ship. Keep it well secured on your person at all times. First, there have been ports where you need to show it after you've carded yourself off the ship and before you enter their country. We've had to do that in Jamaica (Ochos Rios) and I believe we had to do it in one or two of the Mexican ports we visited, one was Cozumel, but the other one(s) escape me at the moment. As for San Juan, a passport should NOT be necessary as it is already a U.S. posession and there is unrestricted travel between Puerto Rico and the mainland. We always keep a color copy of our passports in the room safe just in case. A color copy has no legal value but -- it will verify via the code number on the bottom of the PP that a valid PP was issued and the Customs folks can punch in that number and verify you are who you say you are. You (Elaine) are probably better able to quote the chapter and verse of the DHS/ICE regulations if necessary. And as a few folks have already alluded to, if you miss the ship at least you've got a legal form of ID with you that verifies your citizenship besides just a driver's license. A DL does not do that.
Oh -- if you're looking to have your PP stamped as you enter and leave each non US port, fuggedabout it. In three previous cruises, we have a grand total of.....ZERO stamps on ours!!! I asked about a stamp in Cozumel and the agent looked at me as though I had two heads!
So, there's my two cents worth, now, let's get back to the parrrtyyy!

LV2Snorkle--I'm stay there Friday night as well. My plane is scheduled to land just before 1pm local time! I'll be at the hotel by 2pm!
I'd like to say I'll be free of glasses and contacts, but since I'll be frolicking in the sea it was advised to wait until after I got back...so late September me eyes are getting zapped by a laser so me no need glasses or contacts. Hi again folks....
I just saw a warning on the Delta Air Lines web site, posted Saturday afternoon, about fraudulent email purporting to be from Delta saying a ticket has been purchased by you and your credit card has been charged with the receipt is attached. Do not open any attachment if you happen to receive email, allegedly from Delta, concerning your tickets. More information can be obtained from the Delta website at www.delta.com (http://www.delta.com) and click on the Advisory on the home page. Considering the closeness of this fraud to our cruise and that some folks may have recently purchased tickets to MIA or FLL, you may be tempted to open this email. Don't! If in doubt, call Delta directly!

Hi all,
Just to clarify something.... I was in Puerto Rico and St Thomas a few months ago. Port rules may be different even if these are US territories.
In Puerto Rico, THEY WILL NOT LET YOU BACK ON THE SHIP... ( I have seen many that were prevented from entering the port due to not having picture ID), if you don't have BOTH your sign and sail card AND a valid govt picture ID (your driver's license is fine). Too many try to stowaway or sneak onboard so you MUST have your sign n sail card AND a picture ID.
In St Thomas it is the same, although they seem to be friendlier about this.
The private Island (Half Moon Cay) is just that. Have your S&S card and you'll be fine. (If you want to purchase drinks there I believe they accept your S&S card).
I have never been to GT but since it is not US territory, I assume we will need to bring both again.
The ship will make announcements over their PA system before they dock. Also, you can always ask the Security folks ONBOARD before you leave the ship. *Don't forget water while onshore*
PASSPORTS are generally NOT required to get off ship and return. BUT.. if you miss the ship, and have to catch a flight back (warning: very expensive and a pain in the ass) you will be required to have your passport to enter USA.
I hope that helped...
BTW.... Walmart has several travel steamers available under $30.
Ohh and Jim.... what were you doing with a razor on your nips??? Haven't you heard of Nair?? LOLOL

CallDoc-GT has security guards posted outside the duty free store (just off the pier) and you have to pass through the duty free store, which is absoutely HUGE!!!) to get into the main part of the cruise center......If anyone has a early excursion you'll have to go into the cruise center and they will be waiting there with signs. There is a smaller pier right next to the main pier where all the boating excursions depart from.....
For all of you who want to hit Margaritaville ASAP take a left at the exit of duty free and its steps away!!!!! Me, I am on the hunt for the giant flip flops for a photo ops. I missed it last year, so I need to find it.....I'll likely have to wander around the pool to find it, luckily, my excursion ins't until 1:45. I can shop for an hour and a half (plenty time), hit Margaritaville, call home (to brag bout how hot it is...) and then head back to the ship at 1 to drop my goodies off and watch the Miracle pull up into port!!!!!!
I won't be in the massive throng of people who are waiting at 11am to get off, I'll wait until 11:30 and get off then instead of getting that sardine in a can feeling while trying to get off at 11am...

We stayed out of the facility in Cozumel both times we were there, but with what appears to be a limited variety of excursions on G-T, eh, what the heck! I'll probably go in and at least buy a shirt!
We're looking forward to seeing the Miracle again. That was our first "real" cruise back in '05 and we loved that ship.

Today at the Manager's Weekly Staff Meeting the G.M. three times said that he'll need me there on Sunday at 8a.m. to help with the Database loading to which I replied "Can they run a cable to Half Moon Cay?" Then needs me another day later in the week and appearently when I asked if it was possible to get the cables run to Half Moon Cay and Puerto Rico would it be ok for me to do the programming while drinking a Margarita and wearing a funny hat....To which he replied, "Tom, what will we do without you?" and i replied "Have a very quiet and boring week."
Who knew that cruising could get me out of a whole bunch of boring database loading!? YAY

Cyndi -- We have nothing packed either BUT -- we have at least dug out our packing lists from previous cruises and started checking to ensure we do bring what we need and not forget anything. Of course it's easier said than done! The list also helps when repacking at the end of the cruise to ensure you haven't forgotten anything in the room! We'll probably get our stuff together and pack up on the 5th.

I am in West Palm Beach in Florida and just went through what was a surprise to all of us. Went to bed Monday hearing that 'FAY' was headed up the WEST coast of Florida. Woke up to find out the storm had changed directions and was headed just north of West Palm! I cancelled all my appts and stayed home Tuesday. We had sporadic power outages and lots of flooding. 40 mph winds with gusts of 60 mph or so. No biggie. Some tornados touched down but no one hurt. I was more angry that our power company had not prepared the area (after 5 yrs since the last ones hit us) and could not withstand 40mph winds????
I was on a cruise when Katrina was moving into the Gulf of Mexico and ended up in New Orleans. We just shifted away from rough seas.
As to the Atlantic, I looked it up on the NOAA website and the next storm is falling apart. I am a believer in positive thinking... all of us need to repeat the following... "THERE WILL BE NO STORMS". Say that three times while jumping up n down three times! (my version of the American Indian rain dance).
Here is pic of the Atlantic. Even if a storm comes close, the ship will re-route to avoid any storms. Their ship is worth more to them than our trip. A few lucky souls ended up having their cruise extended for a few more days! Hmmmm?

Not one post since 8 this morning?!? Come on people 17 days!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Has anyone heard of Flat Stanley? It's a project that apparently is very common in elementary school. Stanley gets sent around and is put in pictures and a little story is told about what Stanley did. Well, I'm bringing two Stanleys (or is that Stanlies? lol) with me on the cruise to make Stanley international!!
My sister-in-law called me today because she just knew I would be going someplace fabulous soon....little did she know how fabulous it's going to be. My 7 year old niece went berserk when I said that Stanley would be on a boat and out on all our excursions. She's so excited!
Yes, I have had my share of Flat Stanley too! My kids have sent them to my aunts in Massachussetts and my brother took one to Japan with him on a business trip. They are cute, but can be such a pain for the parents
I have started to pack and have not even filled my big suitcase (of course there are only 3 pairs of shoes in there :p ) so I think I will have plenty of room for shopping. I only have this weekend to shop/pack, when I get the chance, because I am flying out next weekend to Baltimore for my brother's wedding and then we fly out the following Friday for the cruise. I am actually starting to freak out a little!!!!!!

So yesterday i did have my suitcases out intending to pack some but when i got home my closet rack had broke and my clothes were on the ground..... so i put off packing for another day. My cats love the fact i have not started packing yet because that gives them a nice place to lay, on my suitcases lol. WOW! its coming so fast, people here at work keep telling me how much they don't want to hear about the cruise lol not sure why:D

OMG it's getting close!! :D
THERE WILL BE NO STORMS.....
I thought it was just me and my slow dial up yesterday. Couldn't get on all day!!
Anyway, my camera came yesterday and I LOVE it! It's soooooo awesome. Can't wait to see what kind of pics it takes of the ocean.
Two weeks and one day until we drop our son & dogs off........ :p
Haven't officially started packing yet, but everything's washed, ironed, drycleaned etc.... Nick works at night so I will be packing over the next few nights. Also have not got goodie bags yet, but have some awesome ideas! See you all soon!

I'm a very positive person so my mantra will be Beautiful Calm Seas and Wonderful Weather that way I won't even have the thought of a storm on my mind.
Does anyone have anything wonderful planned for San Juan? We haven't decided what we want to do yet,
We've been to St. John and Sapphire Beach and loved them both for snorkeling. We don't know if there is another wonderful snorkeling beach or if we should just go back to one we've been before. Any suggestions?

NIPPLE UPDATE: My nips have been very lazy lately. I think about the cruise, nothing. I think about college football, nothing. I think about washing the sand out of my butt at Half Moon Cay, nothing. They just sit there and don't react to anything. Out of desperation I got an ice cube and ran it in a circular motion around each nip to get a reaction. Finally they came to life. Come to find out, the bumps around each nip spell out "Carnival Liberty September 6th, Party freakin time!!" in braille. Turns out they were excited the whole time and I didn't even know it! Nipples are real tricksters.
Why do I get the feeling that half of you are gonna take pictures of my nipples on the ship?

GCL-The birds are residents at the Miami Airport Hilton. I can assume these parrots/macaws were unwanted pets and the hotel is their home and they are cared for by the staff. The birds were outside last September as it was still hot and humid. I think the birds get moved around a little more Nov-April when the weather "cools" in Florida because I never saw the birds outside when we were there in January 07
As for Vista--I had no choice in the matter. My Emachine's motherboard went and left me computerless, so I opted for a Toshiba laptop. At least the computer makers are now realizing Vista needs a minimium of 2GB to run ok and 3-4GB for it to run faster and work better....I still CAN'T change my office assistant in Microsoft Office Suite 2007 because there isn't enough memory to run it...sheesh....I wish my old Emachine would have been cheaper to fix, but a motherboard is not cheap.....
16 days!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Packing will commence on August 30/31 and be done Sept 4th a few hours before I leave for the airport at 9pm!!!!! I can only hope my pink pashmina shows up at work so I can bring it and see if that extra cushioning will allow me to sleep on the plane (by covering my head and making it all dark!!!

So here's a idea on a freebie to do in Puerto Rico that I just read about while trying to research some excursion ideas.
DON Q Rum Factory
So pretty much it's a giftshop/bar that keeps giving you free samples of DONQ Rums (trying to entice you to buy). It's right across from teh cruise terminals so it's a nice freebie right off teh boat. (And DONQ is the most popular rum in PR.)
(Go figure, Tom is obviously teh one looking at booze booze and more booze...who knew??)

I've seen some of those "Flat Stanley" pics floating around the station a while back. One of the people has a doll of "Big Boy" that's been taken on various trips and the pics posted on one of the bulletin boards.
Dumbwaiterboy -- We did essentially the same thing in Grand Cayman four years ago and I had one hellofa buzz going at 10:30 AM from sampling the rum at the Tortoga Rum Factory. I was a bit tipsy and probably would have flunked the breathalyzer test! But it was soooo goood! Maybe Elaine will take notice and get buzzed here too!!!
Misguided -- Okay on the birds at the MIA Hilton. Since we're flying in the day we sail, I doubt we'll get over there:). But it's something to know for any future trips we take, and if we can get a direct flight into MIA. Thanks for the tip! Having your motherboard crap out is no fun! It's made worse in a notebook or laptop machine with the tight confines. My "notebook" is a real old Toshiba Libretto with a Pentium 1 processor still running Windows 98SE. It doesn't have enough oomph to run XP, let alone Vista, but it still does what I need it to do, and that's all that matters to me at the moment.
Elaine--I can just see it now -- Jim's shaved nips in full color in the capers!!! <ROTFL!!!> It's a good thing most kids will be in school except of course the "Devonator!" Speaking of the little one, He's been awfully quite the past few weeks!
JimMoFo -- I concur with the majority -- full color hi-res photos of your nips (shaved, of course) are in order! Now if we can only get one printed aboard the ship and posted somewhere ... wait -- there's a photo lab on board.....:D Lemme see... 11x17 enlargement? Hmmmmm! Better yet, a digital pic displayed on the Jumbotron??? Hmmmmm!!!!
(This is going down hill fast... I'll change the subject!)
BuffaloGirl -- Jill and I are with you jumping up and down praying for no storms.
Deb -- we used to start packing days in advance and still worried if we took what we needed and usually wound up taking way too much. This year will be different thanks to the airlines. OH! BTW, in case you didn't know, you can have laundry sent out mid-cruise to be cleaned, and you may be given a laundry bag at some point towards the end of the cruise to fill with as much as you can for a flat fee -- I think it was less than $20.00 -- well worth it! That makes it much easier when you get home, or for the end of the cruise if you really pack light. But after three cruises and seven or so trips out to Las Vegas plus other annual travels, we just pull out the list and pack from it. It takes much less time and and a little less worrying.
SandyToes -- Congratulations on getting your camera! Now you've got two weeks to learn how to operate it! Make sure you have enough digital "film" (large capacity memory cards). I'm still bringing the manuals with me in case I forget how something works with mine.
DOC, I monitor the same NHC sites for the same reasons, plus we have three meteorologists on staff, whom I'll be in touch with the week before we set sail. I have relatives in the Boca Raton area and will be in touch with them later today. But as storms go, this one didn't seem as powerful as the ones in '05. We lucked out in '05 cruising in between storms that year aboard the Miracle.
16 days.... I'm already starting to wind down and get ready for the trip.

The meet and Greet is on the first full sea day, which is Monday at 2:00 pm in the Stage bar, which is the karaoke bar. The goodie bags are optional. We are swapping items that are from your state, since we have such a variety on here. Putting a $10 limit on it, but you can still attend the meet and greet even if you don't want to do the bags.

My motto has always been "If its free, it's For me!"
A few (lot) shots (big ones) of rum (free, of course) getting us tipsy (drunk out of our minds) doesn't make us bad people...it makes us be conservatist....anything to conserve our money to be able to waste on other drinks that aren't free.
If it's free...have two...or three...or the whole dang bottle!

hi all....is the lifeboat drill before we actually leave port?
Hi Smile -- yes, it's a Coast Guard requirement and a pain in the butt, especially if you're one of the first ones down there. You get squished against the back wall and it's no fun, especially if you're "vertically challenged!" If that applies to you, wait a while before you walk down the stairs to your muster area. The ship cannot sail until the drill's concluded, and once it has been, we're usually underway in about 20 - 30 minutes.
Dumbwaiterboy -- I know we're docked in San Juan and St. Thomas, and from what I remember from way earlier in these posts, that Grand Turk is a docked port too -- they've built a new dock there. BTW, we did the "Stingray City" tour last year in Grand Cayman and the stingrays were quite docile and easily handled. Why not -- they're getting free food!!! It really was a great experience and if you can, go for it. Just watch where you step!!!
Misguided -- just don't bring any snow!!! We have enough of that crap here in Bos... er ahh 'Baahstin!!!'
I'm all for the rum factory and the free samples." Maybe there'll be a "contest" with Elaine to see who can get the fastest buzzz on!!! :D We really haven't found much to do in San Juan anyway. We've got a few tour books and they don't list all that much to do there except for maybe a tour of Old San Juan. Anyone got any good ideas?

Just a quick note to skip the barcardi rum factory tour in San Juan - did it a few years ago and it was a complete waste of time - think you'll be very disappointed. Better to go to the Don Q shop by the dock in Old San Juan and enjoy some free beverages. You'll waste a whole bunch of time on the bacardi tour and there are so many other great sights to see / ways to spend your time in San Juan. Just my humble opinion....

Happy friday everyone!
WOW, 15 days... I can remember when it was 6 months left!
Here is a shot of HMC I took last year, enjoy and think about it the next 2 weeks bc it's going to be here soon enough.

*Who all wants to meet up and go to the rum factory together?
*Is anyone besides me doing the Ocean Race in St Thomas?
*Jim we have to register www.nippleupdate.com (http://www.nippleupdate.com) for you, so classic and you are the man!
*Elaine, trust me you aren't the cruise drunk bc we are definitely going to have some drunk stories to take home with us after the cruise. I think between my group and your group it's going to be a CRAZY!
*Doc and other see you all at the pool bar before we set off!
*Oh and also think about the team events (red, white and blue teams). You may want to bring at least one of each of these colors to get your team some points. I hope a majority of us will be on the same team so that we can dominate the events! Time to win those 24k Gold plastic ships on a stick :D
Tony
That water is just gorgeous. It looks like it's right off a postcard!
I think we might be up for a rum factory. We don't have any set plans for San Juan yet. We'll have to see what the best options are...
Thanks for the support Tony! I think you're right...sounds like we're going to have a great group of people that it's going to be beyond ridiculous!
Cruise Olympics??? I'm in!
two new systems now forming just in time to blossom into category 5 hurricanes over the next two weeks as they arrive in the caribbean.
if the first one misses us, the second one will still have a shot at the area.
Okay, enough with the doom and gloom. Whatever happens will happen. We can't control it. What we can control are happy and positive thoughts that our cruise will be wonderful and peaceful.
I survived Andrew in '92. We didn't think it was going to be bad and it was horrendous. But nothing would have changed that. If a storm is going to be in our path, they'll divert us. We'll just see different ports. Either way, we won't be at work and we'll be surrounded by friends and family and having a great time.
What will be will be. I'm not focusing on it.
15 days party people!!!

these hurricanes haven't formed yet. they are still somewhat disorganized as tropical depressions over the atlantic ocean. so right now they have the potential to strengthen over the next two weeks in warm waters and mature into full blown hurricane status. the ships crew will deviate their path and avoid these storms which means we will miss out on the scheduled ports, and may not see perfect weather that week. especially if there are 2 live systems raging in the area. this will leave very few safe waters for the ship to navigate around. no pool, no tanning on the decks, just drinking games in the bars. free vomit bags and dramamine tablets for everyone. I hate it when your elevator arrives and there is fresh vomit all over the buttons and hand rails.

Tony - Meeting up to go to DonQ sounds like fun. Right now Cherie and I are just planning on relaxing (and drinking) in Puerto Rico (unless some sort of excursion pops up that isn't just a walking tour)....
Steve - Thanks for the great news on Tendering. Last cruise we tendered into Belize and I didn't enjoy that too much...The water was pretty choppy and I thought I was gonna kill myself trying to get back off the tender onto the cruise ship.
As for the rest of the days:
HMC - BEACH DAY...Cherie, you need to remind me to use sunscreen...and lots of it...no need to come back like I did from Miami (Whoever let me fall asleep on South Beach from noon-3pm without any sunblock is dumb...ok, I'm dumb)
St Thomas - Skyride to Paradise Point to have a few Bushwackers and enjoy the Parror Show...and get pictures with the Parrots for my dear sister's Million Parrot Project...Then head to Red Hook to have lunch and beverages (non-alcoholic or course) at Duffy's Love Shack...Then head back to the Cruise Ship area are check out some of the other bars and shops
Grand Turk - Reefs and Rays...Most likely doing the eaerliest one so we can get back to the port and hit up Maragaritaville and some shopping. Maybe more parrot pictures if we're lucky :::crossing fingers:::
SanJuan - see above
Two weeks until I have a Mojito in my hand laying on the beach in Fort Laudedale the day prior to the CRUISE!!!

Tony….you have officially given me goose bumps (nuts…here comes the stubble lol)!!! The pic of HMC was the most gorgeous sight these baby blues have seen all week!!! I absolutely can’t freggin wait!!! It’s been a heck of a week and I’m sooo ready to get gone!!! lol Is there anyway to photo shop me into that pic??? Just to get the appropriate visual ya know! Lol
Goodness…I think Tony (officially nicknamed Dimples) may be right!!! This group is going to have a great time together! And for some reason I can’t wait to meet Deb! She sounds like the kind of mom that can hang! Deb…will you be joining us on the tables (dancing)???? LOL I’ve also nicknamed her mom and Steve is kinda like dad (for his excellent advice) and Smiles is the cat girl and Angie is the one I’m gonna duke it out for the iron and Doc is the poker guy! Lol
Oh and for the ladies (since you are probably the only ones that will appreciate my enthusiasm) I received my new bathing suit yesterday (ordered it via website…dangerous…yea…I know…I must have been on crack or something!) lol anyway..it TOTALLY matches my FABULOUS hat that I recently bought for my vacation!!!! I’m soooo excited! Lol
Come on guys…the fact that we are actually having not only a conversation but also updates on my little brother’s nipples is enough to make me puke a little in my mouth! Lol Don’t get me wrong…I can tell him all about my juicy life (trust me…he’s heard plenty) and that’s fine…but I soooooo don’t want to even think about his!!! Lol I diapered his little butt dang it! It’s like your parent’s doin’ it…you know it happens…but you don’t want to hear about it! Lol Can we say heeee-beeee-geee-beeeeeesssss!!!!! Lol
Hey Buena Hoja….enough with the negativity!!!! Holy cow….you’re gonna freak cat girl out!!! lol Think positive my friend! For me…my cup is half full (preferable with rum if you wouldn’t mind)!!!! lol
Only 15 more days left!!!! Whew….I can almost hear sound of the horn, waves and the calypso music now….”sir may I please have a frosty drink with one of those cute little umbrellas… oh and do you like how I’ve coordinated my hat and suit???” LOL
I don’t know about any of you but my boss isn’t going to get a decent day’s work out of me for the next two weeks!!! Lol Wooo-hooo!

(i would pay money to see her table dance though:D) She claims she is gonna party like she is 25 again. lets see what happens....I have faith in her lol

Buena Hoja....I'm with Elaine, Tina and Beckie.....enough with the negative thoughts!!! We're too close to spoil the mood with scary thoughts and we don't want any negative people on our fun message board!
Tony-that picutres is so gorgeous, it doesn't even look real. Beckie and I work with a gal that was at HMC a few years back and she told me her ideal vacation is to dock there and not leave for 7 days! Ahhhhh, I can't wait!!!
Tina-you crack me up! Love the nicknames! Don't worry, you aren't the only one who ordered something online.....Beckie and I have ordered so much over the last couple of months that the receptionist is getting tired of bringing us our packages. :)
I'm curious........who all is meeting Doc under the Jumbotron?

Ok I have to admit I am a little freaked.....
Gotta remember I come from Nevada where we have no weird or wild weather, just lots of sun either hot or cold and wind. Guess I shoud stop looking at the circles out in the atlantic and quit reading No Bueno's posts. Who is this guy anyway? A troll?
I will admit also to ordering a bathing suit last year online (in the middle of winter when they're not in stores) and it is one of the best fitting ones I have ever bought!! :D
As for the Red/White/Blue color games, last I heard they had gotten rid of them as well as the singing in the dining rooms. Sure, take away our fun.... we'll make our own I guess, can I join the dancing table ladies? They still give out the 24 karat gold plastic ships on sticks though, my favorite!:p
Oh and if anyone wants a good read for the plane or sun deck, I ordered this book from Amazon called Cruise Confidential. It's real life story of an American who worked on Carnival. I was going to limit my self to the first chapter for now and save the rest but I can NOT put it down...... and I normally don't have time or desire to read...
Have a great weekend everyone, only 2 weekends left! I will be packing later on this weekend. ;)

maybe if we do it like a yankee swap?
we can write the numbers 1-?? on little pieces of paper...every draws a number...then number 1 picks a bag and opens it for all to see...then #2 picks a bag and unwraps it and can either keep it or steal #1's gift and continue. once all gifts are open, #1 gets the final pick to keep their gift or steal ANYONE's...
It's just a thought...but my banquet staff loves doing yankee swaps a couple of times a year...some says it's because they want gifts...some say cause then like the fact we go do the exchange while bowling...scorpion bowling that is!

Toronto Guy-I enjoyed the history of the rum factory, and no free booze. Well, you get two free sample drinks....The family history of Bacardi is interesting..I liked San Cristobal quite a bit...
GCL--No snow yet, so I won't bring it....besides, it would melt when it hit the Florida heat...
Buena Hoja-NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We all have think and pray that they peter out or go West! I do not Want to miss Half Moon Cay or Grand Turk!!!! Now, if it does hit and we go West that means I got to call Carnival and swap my Western cruise on the Valor for a ship that does the route were doing...heck, I needs me some HMC!!!!
One of the ladies from my office was in Orlando when Fay decided to stroll on in and hang around. They left to come home today....
E Heffa-what ship were you on when you did HMC last year? I went on the Triumph Sept 15-21st....

two new systems now forming just in time to blossom into category 5 hurricanes over the next two weeks as they arrive in the caribbean.
if the first one misses us, the second one will still have a shot at the area.
Welcome to the gang, Buena Hoja!
I just checked the NHC site and wouldn't get too worried on these two systems just yet. Only one has potential and it will probably have come and gone by the time we set sail. As for the other one, well, we'll just have to wait and see - and jump up and down to throw it off course! It's still way out there and the predictions are not favorable for intensification so far. As I mentioned earlier, I'll be checking with our "weather-guessers" towards the end of this coming week. But what the heck -- rjw's got the best attitude yet to just stay inside drinking! It's still better than being at work!!! [not to throw a wrench into the crowd, has anyone seen the pic of the Carnival Triumph plowing into a wave during a hurricane a few years ago? The damned wave broke over the bridge!!! Holy cow!!! Google it, and you too will say O-M-G!!!]
Cruise Olympics Elaine? Sounds like a plan at the Rum Factory, but with no disrespect to our USA Olympians, I'm sort of Olympic'd out right now. Fortunately I get to close them out Sunday night in Boston and get on with our "regular programming." I wish I could wind down and only talk about the cruise, but if that was all I thought about (it is getting close though) we would't stay on the air and I'd be out of a job. Not a good thing in these times.
We were lucky on our first cruise on the Miracle and won a ship-on-a-stick the very first day! It set the tone for a great experience. And the airport gorillas didn't break it either!!
Skyroadster -- what a beautiful pic! Nice job!!! I can't wait to get there!
We don't know what we're going to do yet in any of the ports. We did the St. Thomas island overview two years ago and frankly weren't that impressed. We are considering the catamaran over to St. John, maybe the skyline tram to the top of the mountain for a quick overview, a jaunt over to Megan's Bay, or just staying in Charlotte Amalie for shopping, or a combination of some of them. We still have time to get completely confused and discombobulated. We've found that if you're with a good group of people, it doesn't matter what the tours are like, you're still going to make it a good trip and we are all going to have fun regardless. That's the bottom line!
Misguided -- we were on the Triumph last June! We had just gotten accustomed to the funky layout of the ship -- you can't get there from here -- when we were on our way back to Miami. I understand the Liberty is laid out just as funky, so the Triumph was a good learning curve. But it was a great cruise and we had some great experiences. We're looking to repeat them this year.
Let me throw out a question for everyone -- what time have you all chosen for dinner? We've picked the 8:00 PM seating -- is anyone else in this dining room? Maybe we can try to sit together -- at a large table to accommodate all of us and keep the party going? What the heck -- we can try!!!
.....Steve (and Jill from the other room!)

as of this morning the national hurricane center has stated that system 1 has intensified while system 2 still remains disorganized, and not a great risk. we will have to wait and see if these develop qucikly and pass, or if they linger and wait for us. kinda like two sharks lingering in the perimiter and waiting for the victim to enter

"GO AWAY, YOU "DEMON"!
Had to get that out! First off, you all can track the storms yourself (if you really want to) at the NOAA website...*google NOAA. BUT...
The one storm is quite disorganised and is so far south it is tracking to South America... NOT THE CARIBBEAN. Timing places it to central America next weekend! The OTHER disturbance is also poorly organiised and tracks NORTH into open waters. STOP with the false info.
Also, what was that about a boss snooping on e-mails??? What concern is it of yours?
Don't "swift boat" my vacation! (for those politically aware).
Next... in St Thomas, someone mentioned going to the top of the hill by tram. That is just outside the port. DON'T Bother. The best view is DRAKE's Mountain. Ask the cabbie to take you there for the famous 'Banana Daquiris'. Your view is of the other side of the island and you can see Megans Bay, St John and the island I and some friends that were with me on another cruise fantasized buying. It's available for 12 million. Hmm, we could divide up who owns what concessions. I of course own the casino. Other concessions available... hotel, restaurants, shops, escort services (figure it out), transportation and other concessions for you all to choose! I have a feeling I know what Jim and his nipps will pick! LOL!
The last Carnival cruise I took was last November and they still had the red, white and blue contests. Actually it is designated by your dining table. My Mom and I are early dining.
I also just bought the grab bag gift. Had a couple in mind but figured Key Lime pie wouldn't hold up even though it's sealed and wrapped, ... same with chocolate covered coconut! Also considered salt n pepper shakers made out of pink flamingos, but nixed it due to the salesperson telling me most people already have a salt n pepper shaker! I settled on a nice ..........................! I figured since this is a drinking group, it would be more appreciated. Hope whoever gets it will like a .......................!
Ahh Paradise!
