OK, cruisers, from all indications many of you are very experienced cruisers. I noticed on another post, Lisa's friends had a GTY SY cabin and assigned a SS cabin...We too had the same cabin assignement from a GTY, SY to an SS on the Navigation deck for the March 17th cruise...Any comments, is Higher better, as you do pay a slightly higher price if you book a SS over a SY. with the only difference being a higher deck. I really don't know, I have been on about 8 cruises, and I could not tell you...Just thought it may be an interesting subject...

March 17th approaching fast.....cant wait....

Thanks

The advantage of a higher deck is often times you don't have to go as far to get to the common areas of the ship. The disadvantage is the higher price and if you hit rough seas the higher up you are (and further from the center of the ship you are) the more you'll notice it. Can make a big difference if you're prone ot getting seasick.

I chose an assigned SY vs. SS because the SY's are on a deck that is between 2 passenger decks. Therefore, no noise above or below from any public decks.

We use the stairs the majority of the time, and find walking to whatever deck absolutely no problem at all.

It al depends on what you prefer... I have been high up on balconies but prefer being down closer to the water... I like a window so that I can look out and see the water almost hitting my window! I like getting as close to the water as I can...much more exciting that way! I love knowing and feeling like I am at sea!

Well, on the Vistas the SS are all on the deck above the SAs, so height is not the only criteria for which is "better"! Personally, I like higher ... but obviously others do not. :)

Well, higher can be better if you mean you get a balcony and a larger room (generally speaking). But there is the tradeoff if you get seasick - it's easier! Generally I opt for a aft suite when given the option, so my deck preference would be higher up, much for the same reason as madelinerose gave - I take the stairs and I generally don't have far to go!

The best rides are lower-middle. Like in real estate, the higher the floor/deck, the more you usually pay on a per square foot basis. That higher deck inside cabins cost more than lower deck inside cabins is my personal favorite disconnect. This makes no sense beyond that most pax will pay more for a higher graded cabin, regardless of common sense.

Higher was not better for us. On our last cruise, which was this past Dec....we were upgraded from the veranda deck to the navigation deck....for us it was a big mistake. We spoke with our TA about this, he told us that if we were downgraded, we wouldn't know where we would be put....so we stayed. I'm prone to getting seasick, we hit a storm coming home from that cruise, & it was horrible. We both took Bonnine & it did help. This time we took a stateroom on a lower deck somewhat mid-ship. If you're not prone to getting seasick, then a higher deck is for you.
Happy cruising

Lynne Myrna - You can have your TA note on your reservation that you don't want an upgrade. This way you'll get the cabin you choose.

My wife sends me to the Lido for her breakfast on the balcony. Not only higher, but aft. If you are seasickness prone, probably a problem.:D

We've had 8010 and 7124, and aft was the smoother ride. Maybe it was just the smoother ocean. I like aft because it's closer to the dining room and the starting end of the Lido line, two places that I am more frequently than any other place. :p And I like high for the view, particularly when in or near ports.

Well....this was what he told us, & we believed him.....this next cruise we booked online & chose the stateroom we wanted, which is lower & mid ship.

Not necessarily. If you are prone to motion sickness, lower is better. Also, mid ship is better. But aft is better than forward. Hope this makes sense!

We booked and aft cabin on the Oosterdam, but as they are all stacked balconies, I chose the Navigation deck, was this a good choice?
I was worried about feeling like "a goldfish in a fish in a tank" on the balconies below that.
Can the pool deck above us look right into our balcony too, or do we have some covered area? I am on the Alaska cruise, so was hoping that level had a little more shelter from the weather, also.
Cheers :)

Hi, our TA booked us for a 7 day Alaskan cruise in Sept. on the Zuiderdam. We'll be in rooms 8096, 8092, 8094. After reading many of the postings, I'm wondering if this was a good choice for my dad (85 y.o.), brother and my two kids (21 & 22) - all whom are new to cruising. Opinions please! Should I contact my t.a. and ask for different rooms if available? Don't want their 1st cruising experience to be a seasick experience. Thanks for any suggestions.

Since 8092 and 8094 are SS, deck 8 is the only place they are located. To move lower you'd have to downgrade to SY at least, and they're only 2 decks lower.

With the size of the Vistas, and being that far from the bow, I don't think they're likely to have problems. My DW and I have spent 10 days in 8010 on the Baltic, and 10 days in 7124 on the Mediterranean. In those 20 days there were only a couple of hours, one night on the Baltic, when the motion bothered me enough that I had to move to a lower deck. DW wasn't bothered enough to leave the room.

I like the higher decks. I don't mind the movement of the ship. I prefer the aft cabins, but DH doesn't like the longer walks to things.

Aft you're closer to the dining room and the starting end of the Lido serving line ... two places where I am more often than any other place! :D

Tomorrow we go on our 96th cruise in ll years..... WE prefer DOWN LOW IN THE MIDDLE. Think about a fulcrum....your elbow is the low point, now move your arm (hand is UP on higher deck)....IF there is turbulance.... you DO rock & roll being higher. Mostly it is simply a personal preference. Find a room you like (we prefer down low in the middle). Remember you only SLEEP in the cabin - alll passengers have the run of the ship sooooo if you want tro go on deck for any reason --- it sooooo easy to do. Remember simply relax & ENJOY!!!!!! I have always stayed on highest level..but in all of them I always thought it might be nicer to be closer to water.. so on my next cruise.. I am about to try that.. !

All the "seafaring" men in the family have repeatedly told us that lower is better if you don't want to feel the brunt of the ship's motion.

We were just on the Oosterdam Feb 17-24. I can tell you that cabin 6071 on the Upper Promenade is a great room. It's an interior room (I only sleep there!) with a bit more room than the average room with 3 full length closets. Room under the bed for suitcases. Complete with makeup table, flat screen(?) tv & DVD player. I always travel with a couple of CDs & DVDs just in case.
