Why are there pop up ads in recent posts? I've been away from my computer for two days and now that I'm back on I've seen several ads. I don't like it one bit.

I just noticed that right now - I think it's totally tacky.
Also, wouldn't having ads tacked onto recent posts just slow down the already touchy CC servers?

Prior to the current ads that are imbedded in the first post, there was an ad after the first post, and I think possibly at intervals down the page. It really isn't much of a change, IMO.

I understand that the owners of CC need the Ads to survive, but, can you please talk to them about the "talking" Ads?
Some of us are at work and what a shock to click on a thread and find a talking Advertisement. I know I am going to get responses to turn off the sound but...still.

my vote is to get rid of the ads all together.

my vote is to get rid of the ads all together.since the board is provided to us at no charge and the considerable operating expense is paid by the advertisers, how do you propose that the board continue to operate if they remove the ads?

I NEVER have the sound turned on on my computer, unless I am specifically looking at something that I WANT to hear. There's just too much junk sound out there.
We live in a world of annoying ads, like it or not, they are a necessary evil for sites like this who no doubt have HUGE server costs. I'd much rather just keep my sound off, ignore the ads, and have the boards RUN without glitches.

When something this valuable is free, then (IMO) the ads are not annoying. Especially the Dove ad with the beauuuuutiful young lady. It's a lot better than an ad showing me; take my word for it.

I'm all for the ads if they keep the service free.

And how much do you think people will be willing to pay for CC?
Everyone here carps on and on about the speed of the boards and then when they sell advertising to pay for the boards, you carp about that. The only solution to this is for users to pay for the boards and I'm pretty sure there would be loud discussion about that and indignant stomping out as people left to go to other boards.
Sorry for the venting but this comment struck me as ridiculous.

Jade 13, would you please put your armpit down? Or am I the only one seeing a Dove ad in your post?

I've been researching/participating in this board for over seven years now. Most of the other boards I used to enjoy have gone by the wayside....either to a pay format or have disappeared somewhere into cyberspace.
As the years roll along, my motto has ultimately become: "Whatever it takes." If something is worthwhile to me, I do "whatever it takes" to make the most of it. If that means skipping over a few ads, so be it. I still find it less annoying than cell phones!

I don't mind it at all- but then I haven't gotten a talking one yet! I like the cruise advertising, actually.

It's a great board with great service. A few ads to keep it running and free aren't going to bother me.

I just checked with Laura and the rates aren't bad. Watch for mine, as a sign of support for the CC boards:
Single guy, broadcaster with incredible voice, sounds better than he looks, wants to meet single gal who, like him, gets senior discount. Must like watching "The Daily Show," "The Colbert Report" and be Catholic. All else negotiable. Send photo of latest bank statement.

OK I've got a few friends who almost meet your criteria. But please, please....what is the Colbert report?

Gail...
If you watch The Daily Show with Jon Stewart on Comedy Central, The Colbert Report with Stephen Colbert follows right after.
TDS was supposed to be fake news, but has ended up as a dead-on satire on the day's events. It's a go-to place for authors, serious authors, and sells books as if they're going out of style. The Colbert Report is a parody of the Bill O'Reilly show (and others similar), and is a go-to place for politicians who wish to reach the younger voters.
Check your local newspaper for time and dial setting. (Eastern: 11/11:30, with reruns at 10/10:30, 2/2:30 and 8/8:30.) I think they do an overnight feed at 1/1:30

tomc....you make me laugh! You're the only one I know of on these boards who has funny "edits." It's nice to know that tongue-in-cheek is not a lost art.

TomC, you are in luck...please forward SS# and name of financial advisor. Several names will pop up, take your pick. All kidding aside, I remember when you checked out the Zuiderdam when we planned the maiden voyage in Dec. 02. That was my first intro to the wonders of CC. I have always appreciated you help and do enjoy your posts.
BTW, I am not on the list. However in the name of the game, when is your next cruise? We could invite a friend along. After all if they don't cruise....they lose! Right?
Blessings,
Gail

I hope my next cruise is not on the Noordam, April 11, Eastern Caribbean. Strange way of putting it. I booked that trip as a protection in case a group thing with some friends in the Fall didn't work out.
It didn't.
I'd much rather go in the Fall, Noordam 11-day, and have asked HAL to put me on their "bump" list. I'm willing to be bumped up to a week before sailing if we can work out a deal for an Oct/Nov/Dec cruise. I have three dates when I can go then.
The Upgrade Fairy can take a walk; I want the Bump Fairy this time.

Anyone else out there with dial up? The ads really slowed it down especillay the ones with google in the site name.
Now I know people will give me a hard time about having dial up. I think that is what the majority of online people have at home. Plus alot of sites run fast enough on dialup. Only the ones that don't test for dial up run slow which I think CC is starting to fall in the category of. I can run two computers playing online poker (4 different sites) on dial up because they want the revenue from dial up users. I will send this to the link the host provided. Just thought I would share a reason for the ads to be less intrusive, you will have a bigger audience.

This morning things are definitely slower here at CC. I'm having a heck of a time opening up threads just to read them.

I can deal with the ads if the site remains free. What irritates me is that the screen freezes whenever you access a different thread until the two ads pop up.
