After following Grenowoods thread on the Carnival board-and read mine on that board, too.
His trip on the Glory has turned into bad news because of sunburn-what a miserable and painfull time.
Take heed all.

:)
Wise people who know that they burn easily in the sun always wear an old t-shirt.

Actually, I just read some warnings about vacation health problems and I believe it said it was not helpful to wear a tee shirt while swimming. It was in a pamphlet from my health insurance carrier.

You can buy a RIT product to add SPF to your t-shirts and other summer clothing. It will be in the laundry aisle at the supermarket. I can't remember the SPF # it adds, but it will stay in the specially laundered items through repeated washings. Just an idea for those particularly prone to burning.

Hi..... doctor time...
You guys are right that plain T shirts don't offer much in terms of sun protection.. The worst are light colored shirts. Dark colored shirts block more sun.... but BOY are they hot. There are some shirts (and pants, AND hats) available at outdoors stores (REI and campmor.com are online sources, Dick's Sporting goods and REI are good brick and mortar sources) that have special coatings and treatments to block UV.
Wear a waterproof, sweatproof sunscreen (buy it BEFORE you go... it's expensive at your destination) and apply it frequently (every 30 minutes if you are highly active or soaking in the water).

As a Red Head with fair skin.. T-shirts are a must for snorkling. I've never been burned in areas covered by T-shirt so I don't think I need the special or treated clothing. As far as type of sunscreen.. Doc is right with waterproof/sweatproof. I find the type for Babies works the best for me.. SPF50.

My brother has albinism, so he always has long sleeved, sun blocking shirts and hats on.
