View Full Version : Check Your Credit Card Bill

I made final payment last week for a September cruise, and when I checked my credit card account online the charge by HAL was $5.92 more than the charge ticket I signed at my travel agency. An inconsequential amount of money; but HAL didn't bother to notify me or my TA of the additional charge. My TA called and was told it was some sort of additional tax that "came up." No matter the amount, it seems they should provide notification before they increase the dollar amount acknowledged by the customer.

:( I ordered ten bottles of wine at $14.00USD and when I received my VISA, HAL had charged me $18.50USD pb. I called and they said they would put it on my ship credit and fax me. This they still have not done.

I would ask for it to be put back to my credit card and inform HAL you will file a grievance with the card company if it is not done. Then follow thru if they do not correct the problem. Good luck.

Thanks for the heads up on double-checking credit cards.

As a side note, thinking of straight-forward honesty with HAL... You might have seen another post recently about the last five Zuiderdam eastern itineraries being switched at the 'last minute' - swapping Tortola and St Thomas - causing people to lose the extra long port time of St Thomas (originally 8A-11:30P now 7A-6P). Many people booked that itinerary so they could go to St John and enjoy without rushing back, yet HAL won't change the official itinerary but rather announce the 'new change' on board. (Not to mention what it causes people who book excursions independently, such as excursions not even offered by HAL). Maybe the credit card things are "accidental" though....

:)

Do you have anything in writing about the wine costing $14 a bottle? Or was this a telephone conversation?

:)

:o Hello KK,
The second week of May I ordered from the GIFT ORDER FORM #199. I called HAL and said please, I would like to order ten bottles of your #199 at $14.00US and she said, would you like that in your cabin or dinning room. I also ordered flowers. She gave me the price for wine then the flowers.
On receiving my VISA it showed a charge of $18.50USD pb. This was the second week of June. I have called HAL and they say they will make a credit of $40.00US and put it on my ship board account. I asked that they fax me this so I would have it for my records. I have put in two calls plus one e-mail and NOTHING. My VISA gets paid by my bank as soon as they receive it.

Leslie,

The beauty of credit cards it their dispute resolution. I would print out a copy of the order form showing $14.00 per bottle. I just checked it and it still shows that amount on HAL's website. I would mail that, along with an explanation to the dispute resolution department and let them handle it.

;) Thank-you very much Marc. Since my phone calls plus the e-mail got me know where, I will take the time and write.
Thanks again Marc.

Have you check with your credit card company? It is possible they may have issued the credit but did not send you the fax you requested?

Or, it is possible they intend to give a shipboard credit for the amount they owe you and that coupon would be included with your documents when they arrive.

I agree it should be a credit against your credit card and should be issued immediately. If they can put a charge onto Visa immediately, they certainly can put a credit on immediately as well.....if they choose to. I never accept the line of this can "take a few billing cycles to appear". Why?? It only takes until my next bill for the charge to appear.

Leslie,

Let us know if and when you get some resolution.

As an aside, we've read on these boards for a few weeks now that the wine cost has increased to $18.00 per bottle. I find it amazing that they have a beverage order form on line that still lists the old price. You would think they'd update it at the same time as the increase and save themselves some hassles.

Leslie - do take the time to write to your credit card company. They will probably send you a form to fill out about the disputed claim. It may take a while, but hang in there.

Hope everything works out.

There seem to be a numer of "disconnects" between the Seattle Office and the website. Makes one wonder if the right hand talks to the left?

:D Thanks s7s, Orcone and KK,

I did as you said and called my VISA through the bank. I had a reply in less than ten minutes.:D Even HAL (Eric) called and apologized. They did put a $40.00USD ship board credit. It was not the money, but the principal of the whole thing. I NOW FEEL SO MUCH BETTER.:D

THANKS ALL:D

Glad you got such a fast, postive response. It's good that HAL responded to you, even if it took some prompting.;)

I have a different question. I also ordered some items, wine and beer, some souvineers, etc from the gift order form and faxed them my order with CC information. I have not received a reply, nor has it been charged to my cc. I emailed them to check into it, but didn't receive a response to the inquiry. What is going on??

 Dear Stillfrantic,

The person you will want and talk with is K. Merriam at HAL. Her e-mail is as follows KMerriam2@HollandAmerica.com. Let me know if you have a problem please.:D

When I went to my TA to make the final payment, I, too, had an extra charge of about $4-6. Turns out that I had taken advantage of a special offer to pay for an I (we had reserved a J) and get upgraded to a DD several months after we had first booked our cruise. We paid the "extra" at the time we made the change--but did not pay the "extra" for the insurance. Could this be what happened to you?

It wasn't insurance in my case because I purchase it independently of the cruise line. I've e-mailed HAL to see what they will say about it.

This happened to us, just ten days ago on The Amsterdam. Small charge, too small for me to worry about? I wonder how often this happens.

lesliewiger.....So happy the situation has resolved for you.

Thank you for coming back here to tell us your result....often folks leave us hanging and I wonder how things worked out.

OK all, HELP---it appears that HAL charged me about $100 over what my final statement read. Somewhere in this forum a while ago someone posted a website where you could check your shipboard account on the HAL site IF you were booked directly thru HAL. Can someone please tell me what this site is, I cannot find it and I've searched using 50 different terms. I'd like to see if it gives me a breakdown. I had a problem with a charge for one of my shore excursions and they placed a hand-corrected final bill in my cabin. Called accounting and the proper person is, of course, out of the office. Like to try on my own before I call back tomorrow.

Thanks!
Nikki
