OK - the heading should read YEARS there's no tears involved in the making of this story...
Martin just discovered that 10 years ago this week he was enjoying his very first cruise - on Fair Princess.

I was on the Fair Princess in 1999, a couple of years after you Martin.
She wasnt around that long was she? As I had only been on the Fairstar before her I thought she was great......till i went on the Sky:D

I think we were lucky with our cruises on Fair Princess. (and yes, she was the old Fairsea, and just last year scrapped in India as China Sea Discovery)
The cruise before my first one had some trouble I think, and it went into Garden Islands dry dock for repairs. The only trouble we had though was the weather was too rough to stop at Amedee Island, so we went on to Noumea and stayed there longer.
It was a nice ship - I remember the Seaward Lounge (or Seaweed Lounge as some people called it!) was always really cold. And the pianist in the South Seas Lounge was always wearing a yellow cardigan, and whenever he wasn't at the piano he would put on a tape that seemed to just play Baker Street continuously!
Funny the things we remember...
Now I feel old though - 10 years ago! Wow - where did the time go??

While we're reminiscing about first cruises, here's a picture of my first ship, the SS Australis, as she looks today:(

My mum and her friends were on the Fair Princess 10 years ago this year. I can remember her saying to me that it was one of the best holidays that she had ever had. I suppose that stayed with me, as since she told me that I had always wanted to take a cruise. As they say, mum's always right, as I have enjoyed every cruise that I have been on, and they beat all the other holidays I have taken in the passed.
I'm still trying to talk my mum into come along with us on a cruise, but it's taking a little time to persuade her.

:( What a sad end for the poor old Australis! I hate to think of them ending up this way after all their years of service and all the pleasure they've given people:(

It certainly is sad. I was 14 when I sailed on Australis and it was such a memorable 5 week trip. I met my "first love" on her and it was on that trip that I decided I was going to cruise when I got older. She was old but she was a beauty.

She didnt quite make her way to the breakers. From memory, she broke loose from her tow and drifted ashore at the Canary Islands. Over the past years she has been broken up by the constant battering of waves.
Also, you can see whats left of her with google earth

I've done lots of research on her over the last few years & yes, you are right Star-Man.
