We are flying in to San Diego on Saturday for a great time on the O-Dam. We will arrive at about 11am.

Would it be better to take a cab to the pier or use the HAL bus.

Cruising is on the way!:D

Thanks in advance for the help!

Take a cab! It's a ten minute drive and much cheaper than the HAL bus. Be advised that the guards at the pier will not let you in prior to 11:30. Have a great cruise!!

Take a cab, you have more flexibility. It will be easier and faster to
get into the port.

We just got off the Oosterdam on Saturday. Take a cab. It is only $5 a person via taxi van to the pier.

San Diego is the easiest, most convienent airport / port we have traveled into and out of. Wish they were all like it. :D

...take a cab.....it is such a short ride ........the cabbie will probably be ticked to take such a small fare and have to come back and get in line.....:)

Taking a cab from the airport to the cruise terminal implys you'll be coming in when the ship is already there. Planes virtually always land at Lindbergh Field on runway 27 (270 degrees, i.e. due west). If you sit on the left (port) side of the plane you will be able to see the ship out of the window when your on final approach.

And you can wave to the people in the high rises as you pass them by also!

I'm laughing out loud on this one... because the plane had BETTER land on "runway 27"!

Lindbergh Field (aka San Diego International Airport), is THE smallest airport in the entire United States, and has only ONE runway for all incoming and outgoing flights. One. Uno. That's it. #27.

So look to the left folks..... there's your ship!

That is, unless you're landing to the east on runway 9 due to fog and/or Santa Ana's. Then you have a pretty descent view of Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego from the left side:cool:

To chime in....thanks for the information about the taxi. We sail 10/01 and the same question has been rolling 'round in my head.

FYI, the same is true in Ft. Lauderdale, the taxi ride is l0 minutes and only a few bucks.

Just make a point, the "other" runway at San Diego is runway 9.
When landing from the NW, thats the other end of 27.
Due to weather, or time of day (due to noise reduction), you can find yourself landing on 9.

Right- its almost always 27 but occasionally 9. Julia is also totally wrong about Lindbergh being the smallest airport in the U.S.

Waynesville/Fort Leonard Wood Airport (TBN) in Missouri is the smallest airport I've visited that has regularly scheduled commercial flights.

Compared to these and other small regional commercial airports SAN and FLL are huge.

Had I realized that it would be such a short drive from the San Diego airport to the dock we might have taken a taxi instead of using HAL's transportation. If we didn't have baggage in tow, I would be tempted to walk to the ship next time. With the heavy traffic and a less direct route to the pier, I don't think I'd try the same thing in Fort Lauderdale though.

HAL charges a rediculous price for their shuttles.

A little OT, but what's the easiest brand of rental car to get at the San Diego pier, to be turned in at the airport a few days later? Does any brand have a rental office within walking distance (leaving DW to mind the luggage), or does any brand have a shuttle that will pick you up at the pier?

Excuuuuuuse me, but I should have quantified that it is the SMALLEST when it comes to runway capacity for a city of this size (I believe we are the 7th largest in the nation). Trust me, I've been involved in airport relocation studies for the past 15 years. And, just because planes do occasionally take off and land in the reverse direction, they are still using the only runway there is... regardless of its number.

JTL513,
The pier is only 1 mile from the rental car locations. I have dropped off a car at Avis and then walked over to the pier. It is an easy 1 mile walk; there is a paved ,level walkway along the water front. Avis did offer to shuttle me over to the pier when the shuttle bus returned but I declined because I figuered I could walk it quicker.
