My husband and I are taking the Panama Canal cruise on the Zuiderdam 4/22 along with my sister (who will be celebrating her 40th birthday!!!:) ), my parents and my in-laws.
My husband, mom and sister have heard about chocolate and/or midnight buffets and are anxious to find out if we will have one. Does anyone know about this?
Thanks!

Well, if our own past experience is any indicator, then there will be a Dessert Extravaganza on your cruise, either in the Lido restaurant or by the Lido pool. The Executive Chef and his staff work very hard to put together an amazing display of ice sculptures, chocolate sculptures, highly decorated cakes, pastries, candy, chocolate fondue, you name it, it's there!! It's quite fantastic, and very popular. Look for it to take place in the later evening, starting around 10-10:30 pm or so.
Enjoy:)

There is a chocolate extravaganza on each cruise. It may not be at night, some ships have had theirs during the day. There is also a Royal Dutch High Tea on one afternoon.
There really isn't a true midnight buffet, more like a late night themed snack about 11 pm every night. Nothing special about these, especially for people who just finished eating at 9:30 or later. We seldom go to them as we have late dining.
It's good for people who have had late shorex on a day that the ship leaves port at 9 or later, but they do try to accomodate people in the lido on late port days....and there's always room service, but that isn't what you asked. The days of the really great giant midnight buffets, I'm afraid are gone.

Oh yea!! My mom will be so happy. She got her chocolate gene from my late grandfather who used to say "If the answer isn't choclate, you are asking the wrong question!"

We just got off the Westerdam and they had a Chocolate Extravaganza buffet. Just like others have said, it started at 10:30, it was set up at 10 for pictures, but they didn't let anyone dig in until 10:30, there was even a chocolate fountain. Oh and they were serving chocolate martini's!

All HAL ships do have a Dessert Extravaganza near the end of the cruise -- usually the last formal night. As a rule they will open it around 10:30 for picture taking. Then after a while you can enjoy chocolate desserts as well as other goodies.
