We chose a cabin 1945 on Dolphin Deck at rear of Amsterdam because of proximity to open rear deck. Was this a good decision? Is there a lot of engine noise? HAL tells us it is a"quiet ship" but we want to be sure.

Although there is an open deck at the aft of Dolphin Deck, don't plan on going out there as it's closed at all times to passengers: That's where the aft-mooring machinery is located.

It's been a couple years since I've been aboard Amsterdam, but I was located at the stern on Deck 7 and there was quite a bit of vibration/rumble in the aft section even up there. Hopefully it's been addressed since then...

We were in 2669, one deck up and a few forward, and there were too many "mechanical" noises for my tastes. Bring ear plugs! :D

That's odd since I was in cabin 1941 for 49 days and don't remember hearing any mechanical noises with the exception of maybe hearing the stern thrusters a time or two. Maybe I have been on too many cruises and have just become used to the ships' noises!

Valerie:)And it was my first cruise ever, so maybe I was hyper-sensitive to strange noises that I might not even notice now! :D

Valerie--

I don't think noises like that would generally bother experienced cruisers like us...
(I know it doesn't bother me - no worse than sirens, etc. in downtown SF)

...but for a newbie asking the question - it's probably an issue.

We will be in cabin 2667 soon, how much motion do you well in this location. We are usually midship, but we were too late booking to get anything there. The cruise we are on is through the Panama Canal starting in Fort Lauderdale continuing to Vancouver, BC. So will be in some open sea.

I,

We were on Amsterdam 1/2/07. We had an inside cabin, aft under the Lido Cafe. Nice a quiet. But I did take a walk on one of the lower deck. There was too much vibration/rumble for my taste. I am use to the sounds of a ship. But this was too much.

The only time I've ever been bothered by motion was high up and very far forward on the Baltic, so maybe I'm not very sensitive to motion though.

Is the Amsterdam similar to the Volendam? I read the ship classes are the same.

My family just booked four cabins today (my first time on HAL) and we have a stern cabin on Deck 7. Is there access to the Navigation deck from the interior stern hallway.
Thanks.

Yes and Yes.
Have a look at the deckplans on the HAL site.

The biggest (& least obvious) difference between the two is that Volendam has the traditional screw & rudder propulsion & steering arrangement whereas Amsterdam is equipped w/ Azipods.

Thanks. I looked at the Volendam deck plans yesterday and saw the hallway goes to all the way aft, but couldn't tell if there was a door at the end.

Our TA suggested room F1928 on the Amsterdam for a fall cruise. Seems like there would be noise from the elevators and stairs. Any suggestions for getting a better location for close to the same money - or is this a keeper?

I specifically book a cabin near the staircases/elevator banks for the convenience. Never had a problem with noise. The elevators are in an alcove.
You may hear more traffic going by your cabin than you would if you were further aft, and I prefer being near the mid-ship elevators, but I don't think this is a bad location.

We too are booked in cabin 1945 on the Amsterdam. We are going on the Alaska cruise on June 1. When is your cruise? If you go first let me know how it was, otherwise I'll let you know.
