If interested in an upgrade (paid) is this possible with HAL and whom do u call like at NCL, is it done at the pier instead or both? If the answer is yes, do u know how much the upgrades are if they are firm prices like RCL has & when do u inquire? Looking forward to replies? Happy cruisin'! :-)

:)

If you are really interested in an upgrade, have your TA call HAL as soon as possible.

Most of the cruises we have been on are sold out a few weeks before the sailing date.

Most of the cruises we have been on, especially recently, have had signs when we were checking in that there would be no upgrades at boarding due to the ship being sold out. I agree with the earlier poster if you want to upgrade do so before your cruise.

Have a great next cruise.

Does HAL offer a different rate for upgrades on existing bookings versus what online travel agencies are showing on their websites for new bookings?

For example: on NCL, you could call their upgrade number, and we had people in our group upgrade from Outside to Suite for $75 each... which still made their overall total well below the advertised "new booking" rate on the various websites (BPC, Travelocity, etc).

I am the Queen of Upgrades done by us. Just ask my TA:eek: Every cruise with the except of our Alaskan cruise and the cruise last December we booked 10 days before sailing date we always move up several catagories from what we originally booked. For instance our next cruise on the Ryndam we orginally booked an Inside Cat. I, we are now a Cat. S Talk about Upgrading ourselves:cool:
Then I am suppose to call our TA today to upgrade our March Westerdam from our Cat. A Aft balcony to a SS Cat. How Much do you bet before we have to pay final payment we may even end up upgrading to an S?
I am so glad we have such a great TA:) I never allow the Upgrade Fairy to work for us Maybe I should:o

Laffinvegas,

Share, please!! :D If you don't mind, do you do this routinely because it winds up being much less than you would have paid booking the cabin you wanted initially? I'm in a BA and would upgrade to an S at the right price and the right level of effort--can only your TA tell you how much more, or can you do it thru HAL?

Thanks!

Here's what usually happens, we book a catagory we think we will like at a price we feel comfortable with very early, at least 6 months in advance or more. Then I set back and weekly keep checking prices if they start to go down I call my TA and see what she can get. A lot of the times we just decide we are willing to spend more money for a better cabin. Thus upgrading ourselves, I have even done this after final payment. They don't mind when you are going up and giving them more money. Some how it is easier to justify upgrading after final payment when you have already laid out the big bucks for the cruise. What's a few hundred dollars more!!!

I was able to upgrade from an A to an S for about $600 more pp on an upcoming Westerdam cruise, but not without having to contact HAL directly and go through two supervisors. They told me the new S price was only for new passengers. They said new customers could get the discounted rate for an S but not existing passengers. Amazing, but true!

I know - I tried upgrading on our upcoming Z cruise - I was willing to pay the difference in price between what I had paid and what several places were selling balcony cabins for a few weeks ago. But HAL told our TA no several times. They said we were booked under one promo - and those balconies are now under another promo. Makes no sense to me at all - given we were willing to pay the increased price difference

It is safest to choose the cabin you want when you book, although not always possible. On our last Celebrity cruise there were no balconies available when we booked in January for our May cruise. I was able to upgrade once to a larger outside at one point, but when a balcony finally came available, the price had gone up quite a bit and I just couldn't justify it. Oh well, at east I have my balcony on Westerdam in September. :D
