OK...we're starting to look at wardrobe to take for Alaska. Mom has a lovely gold dress she wants to wear for both formal nights. She would wear a gold bugle beaded/rhinstoned throw over it the 1st time and a colorful shawl the 2nd time. Do you think it's OK for her to wear the same dress for both formal nights on a 7 day cruise to Alaska? It sure would help with packing.

Of course it is. If anyone should ask  she merely needs to declare there were many requests that she show it off again. ;)

Hey that is just what we are planning on doing. We are going to travel light on our trip up to the US this year and on our 10 day cruise I will only be packing one formal wear, I have decided that it is really quite ridiculous what I have packed in the past. I have come to the conclusion that nobody probably notices what I am wearing and that they probably don't really care either.

Sounds good to me. !
Ruth, your answers always make so much sense! Glad you got some chocolate. How does that fit into the classification of "soft food" on HAL?

Look at it this way- do you remember what anyone else wears and do you care? Of course not. ;)

I agree with everyone else. It sounds fine to me. Enjoy your cruise to Alaska.

From a guy point of view I don't see anything wrong with it either and I've been trying to tell my DW that. However, Mother's Day is coming up, if you're looking for something to buy for her. I think it's two weeks before you sail.

When we did our 7 day Alaska, and 10 day Carribean, I took one formal black dress(one that I purchased for our first cruise in 1999) and wore it to all the formal nights. There were two and three respectively. My personal feeling was I was nicely dressed and looked all right, so what was the big deal if I re-wore the same dress twice? I tend to bring a few more outfits for every other night and rotate them as well, since they are just a part of my regular wardrobe and do not require the extra expense assoc. with formal wear. Having said all that, for this 3 week cruise there are 5 formal nights, so I did go out and purchase a new outfit on sale that could be mix and matched with other pieces in my wardrobe to create a few more outfits. As well, I am borrowing a dress from a friend to add to my formal wear wardrobe. So the long winded answer is...there is nothing wrong with wearing an outfit more than once;)

She actually has other outfits to wear for formal, but she wants to just wear one dress with different accessories. I will happily tell her she has the CC'rs blessings!:D

Nathan, since your Mom already knows me tell I said that is perfectly fine:) Actually it sounds like an excellent idea especially since one tends to pack a bit more for Alaska with warmer clothes and layers.

Do the men ever agonize over having only one tux?
She should wear what she enjoys - the only thing people will remember is that she looks great and is having a good time. Nancy

I've worn the same outfit more than once. I never notice what people are wearing at home so why start on vacation?

I've learned over the years to re-use outfits and not pack so much. Sometimes I'll wear the dressier outfit for the first formal night and dress down with a pantsuit for the second one - or just wear the same outfit twice. Enjoy the cruise. Alaska is a bit more informal anyway.

Am doing the same dress for both formal nights on our upcoming Alaska cruise this Sept. I ALWAYS have overpacked for our cruises and just recently have started to pack a little lighter and repeat outfits. When we first started to cruise, I would bring a different outfit and shoes for each night and even have a few extra things in case I could not decided what to wear. I guess as we get older, and want to lighten our luggage a bit, I find that I can repeat an outfit and not worry about it. Remember, there is always drycleaning service on board, so you can always send something out to be cleaned. In Dec. on the Oosterdam we had a suite and this service was included, they do an ok job, I would not send an extremely expensive formal outfit to the onboard cleaners, just as I do at home, the more expensive items go to a specialty cleaners. As previous posters have stated, no one remembers or really cares what you wear. The only time people really take notice is if you are not in the proper attire for the evening, eg. jeans on formal night. Believe me these people stand out, not someone that repeated an appropriate outfit a second time.

I agree with everyone else. No problem with a repeat. AH, Ruth I love your answer...you're such a clever lady!!!

Absolutely, positively acceptable to wear same outfit twice, especially as she is accessorizing it differently each time. Best wishes for a wonderful cruise full of happy times for you and your mom.

By all means wear the formal twice, but don't make the mistake of telling everyone.
On one of our cruises one ladiy at our large table mentioned over and over that she was wearing the same gown that she wore for the first formal night. None of us had noticed it until she kept bringing it up again and again.
She didn't realize that a 7 night cruise had 2 formal nights she said.
Change the accessories and nobody will notice.

I've worn the same outfit more than once many times on cruises. On our upcoming cruise to Alaska (our third), I'm bringing only one formal outfit and it's a simple travel knit black dress with a jacket. I've found that in Alaska, it's good to have something with sleeves (jacket or shawl) and comfortable shoes. That way, I'm comfortable stepping out on deck to see the gorgeous scenery go by and I can enjoy the almost 24 hours of daylight in early June.

I think it would be wise to remember that you are going on an exciting, relaxing and enjoyable cruise and NOT to a fashion show..From a guy's view, it's OK and I only bring one suit and a couple of ties..They have not disbarred me from any activity on the ship after 19 cruises. Don't fret about it. Do whatever your comfortable with. ENJOY !

Spoken just like a man. Don't believe for one second that it's not a fashion show, too. Every place there are women wearing clothes there is a fashion show. ;)

I got a solid black long dress (with no bangles or beads or anything) on ebay for under 20 bucks. I'm going to wear it with different tops and jewelry and it'll look like two different outfits. And if it doesn't, who cares?

IMHO, a great dress deserves a second formal night. Besides, it's only fair to those fellow passengers who didn't get to see it the first time!;)

This post is somewhat superfluous since I agree with everyone who has posted so far. However, here's my take on the subject: I'm going to Alaska for the first time in 20 years and I am taking one black two-piece dress with me for however many formal nights there will be on the cruise. I'll wear the same shoes but take an assortment of jewellry to (hopefully) change "the look".
Your mom is going to look magnificent, both nights, and I'm sure that you will both have a wonderful cruise without any of the fashion police breathing down your necks.

You will see me in the same dress both formal nights on the Statendam in Sept. I bet no one will notice. With a cruise tour before, I really don't wnat to drag that much luggage around....

Absolutely! The whole reason I rented a tux on our last trip was I just didnt want to pack that stuff. Honestly I am an overpacker and can put my DW to shame there, but I was trying to cut down and not bring my tux. I think that if she has one lovely dress that she'll accessorize differently then more power to her..... leaves room in the luggage for more souvenirs and stuff :)

Well another male opinion Though some women treat it as a fashion show and dress accordingly, the reality is this. You are on a 7 night cruise, having dinner with passengers you just met and will probably never see again, despite that you might wish otherwise. So why should you care about how many times you wear that same dress with different accessories for dinner and socializing with fellow passengers who could care less. Unless they are fashion snobs - and yes, there are some of those. What you wear is of little consequence; how you conduct yourself and treat others is all that is remembered in the long run.

I agree. On my upcoming Christmas Holiday Adventure, I will be dressing and paring down on luggage, as my dear son will be traveling with my Dd and I and he is in a wheelchair. He works hard in therapy and we have church type attire, but nothing fancy as it is not feasible for him.
I am not purchasing any new clothes for next adventure. I have plenty and I am just going to dress up a little black dress and a red one and let go. being with him is way more important. But I do love seeing everyone all dressed up. My hope is to get him in a tuxedo and have a picture made as he missed his senior prom due to the accident.
Wear what is easiest and pack light (from someone who has lugged too much luggage and too many things, too many times through airports).
