Trying to decide which cruise to take - We (couple in our 40's and parents young 70's) are planning an Alaska Inside Passage cruise for May 2008 and are considering the Mercury and Serenade. Both visit Hubbard Glacier and Juneau but Mercury goes to Ketchikan and Sitka vs. Serenade to Icy Strait Point and Skagway.
Does anybody have any advice or experience to share in comparing these two cruises?

Hello! My husband, myself and our 18 year old son sailed on the Mercury to Alaska last August, when she was still sailing out of Seattle. Our itinerary was Juneau, Skagway, Hubbard Glacier and Ketchikan. Ketchikan was my favorite! As you are approaching the city there are sea planes taking off and landing all around you, fishing boats coming and going; the city itself is very picturesque, and it just had a certain charm that I didn't think Juneau or Skagway had. That being said, they're all very, very interesting. Skagway, truthfully, was my least favorite, in terms of there not being much there, but Lynn Canal, which you sail up to get to Skagway, has some beautiful scenery! The Mercury, though not a newer ship, is fabulous -- great layout, comfortable, lots of neat little hideaways, good food, and a very, very gracious crew.
If you're interested, check out my pictures from this cruise at www.jenbo.smugmug.com (http://www.jenbo.smugmug.com). Just looking at them makes me want to go back, but we sail for Mexico a week from today! :)

Be prepared to be totally awed by the Hubbard Glacier and surrounding mountain range! We lucked out as far as the weather went (not a cloud in the sky, the sun was shining) and it was truly breathtaking!

You'll have such a wonderful time! We're planning on going back; probably flying to Sitka (because we didn't stop there on our cruise), renting a car and exploring that area for 4 or 5 days. And after seeing the St. Elias mountain range, I'd sure like to go to the national park up there. Aaahhhh, so many trips, so little time!

We did a 9 day on the Mercury from Vancouver to Alaska, then to Victoria & down to our homeport of San Francisco. We really enjoyed it. I'd highly recommend the Mysty Fjords floatplane excursion in Ketchikan (standing on the pylons & watching bears feed on salmon in the creek was amazing). Try the Alaska coupon book that does that outing as a 2 for 1. Whale watching in Juneau was great as was the glacier cruise. Saw tons of wildlife. Only downside was a glitch in shoretime at Skagway.
