I have friends (two couples) from Salzburg, Austria. They have just completed the Alaska cruise on the Statendam. I know the two ladies are very FUSSY.
They had tried to get staterooms in "A" and could only get "C" I believe. They are now on the way back home and I will let you know what they thought and about the "SOE" for the Statendam.;) They now have completed twenty-six cruises with HAL.:D

Leslie, keep us posted. We have never been on the Statendam and would like to know what they think of her. We will be on her in October.

My first cruise (2001) was on the Statendam, so of course I had no basis for comparison. My cruise expectations were exceeded, and I would sail her again. Having since sailed on the Maasdam, I prefer that ship in terms of decor. The layouts are pretty much identical.
The Statendam was done in earth tones, which kind of dates her. By comparison, the Maasdam was decorated with cool greens and blues, which I thought gave the ship a more elegant feel.

Guess we have to wait until October to see if we like the "earth" tones.

I was on the Statendam when they 1st built her back in 1992.
Sailed on one of the maiden Caribbean cruises from New York, and I enjoyed
every day of it. The most 'recent' cruise was back in '98 from FLL.
Have to say, loved my time on board both times. As mentioned before, she has 'earth tones'. The only exception is the Crows Nest and main show lounge. Altho the CN was toned down a bit (new furniture and some potted palms) I'm not kidding! :-)
Palms do help to kill off some color, and that room needed it.
Some trivia for you ....... the original plan was to name that room the
Mondriaan Lounge, as stated in the 1st deck plan.
That's why the room has those abstract colored panels in the ceiling.
Ask rev neal, he was on her most recently (2002?)
He can tell you if the feel is the same thru-out the ship.
cheers

The Crows Nest and the Main Show Lounge (The "Van Gogh Lounge") are all quite colorful. Check out my photos of the Statendam, which are indexed from the page linked bellow. Except for the Crows Nest and the Van Gogh Lounge the rest of the ship is far more traditional ... "earth" tones, yes, but also woods and stone-like colors. It's lovely.
I loved the Statendam, and would cruise again on her in an instant.
