Carnival to build terminal here.
Just got our Cruise Travel magazine today. There is an article in it about Carnival Corporation and plc signing an agreement to build and operate a cruise terminal on the island of Roatan. Development of the facility is to be called Mahogany Bay - Roatan and work is expected to be started in the fall of 2007 and to be completed by the summer of 2009 at a cost of $50 M.
The cruise facility will be situated on 20 acres on the waterfront. It will consist of a 2 birth cruise terminal capable of accommodating the largest post-Panamax vessels and up to 7000 passengers.
Adjacent to the facility will be a 35,000 square foot Welcome Center. There will be shops, restaurants and bars. There will also be a 60 foot high lighthouse, a lagoon cascading waterfalls and a nature trail.
A transportation hub with the ability to accommodate taxis, rental cars and tour buses is also being planned. A variety of shore excursions to be provided by local tours operators is also being developed.

That is good news.
Roatan was a nice stop, but that pier area was scary.

What makes you say that?
Was it the Coxen Hole Cemetary that scared you?

It has been years since we were there -- really enjoyed the port. Maybe someday we will be on a cruise that will stop there again.

Like one other poster said , it's dumpy and just a lot of shady looking people around , moreso than other ports I have been too.
I am the grandson of funeral directors , cemetaries don't scare me in the least. Those poor souls in there can't hurt anyone anymore.
Its the living ones that will kill you!

That is good news. We enjoyed Roatan more than any other port on our recent cruise. :)

Frankly, that's one reason I'd avoid going to Grand Turk again - it's just too Corporate/Generic. It looks like they brushed off the plans for Costa Maya and applied a veneer of "Caribbean-Island-Color"
I'd rather stop someplace that may be a little "dumpy" but genuine rather than another pre-packaged & over-developed "Tourist Mall".

Does anyone know where "Mahogany Bay" is located? Will it be near Coxen Hole?

I don't think its a "real" location - just the name of CCL's retail/cruise development.

The one time we were in Roatan, we were told by the cruise staff to not go beyond a certain point, unless a bonified excursion was being taken. Yes, it was OK to walk around for a short distance, but to not go off the beaten path and to be VERY aware of where we were and who was around us.
Can only say that somebody is spending a lot of money to improve Roatan...and it would be nice if a lot of the employment went to the country itself. Goodness, but it is a poverty stricken port for a cruise line.

They could justifiably say the same thing in New York or New Orleans, Istanbul or Barcelona, Rio or Rome.
Just because it's a "relatively" poor country and doesn't have a major cruise terminal doesn't make it any more unsafe or unattractive to visit.

I went there for a diving trip a few years ago. It wasnt that bad. Yes, poor people, but nice for the most part. There are parts of Puerto Rico and Jamaica that are FAR worse

Sad but true, NYC, Rome and New Orleans all have their seedy side, never been to Istanbul or Barcelona so I cant comment there. Heck there are parts of Oakland that I'd rather not venture into but came upon searching for the airport! ;)

Speaking of which, How has getting around been since that piece of highway collapsed after the tanker truck fire? Looked like a real mess on the news.

Hehe - another good reason no to go to the East Bay!
;)
It's apparently not as bad as the media make it out to be - but since I live 18 blocks from my office in SF, it doesn't affect me at all...

Glad to hear it. :) A few years back and large portion of I-95 was closed for a few weeks due to the exact same thing around here. Traffic was just a pain in the neck and detouring through the city streets was a nightmare

I loved Roatan. Personally, building a terminal would make it too commercial in my opinion. I believe in the KISS method (keep it simple stupid). There is no need for a tourist trap with Diamonds International, etc.
