View Full Version : HAL "Roll Calls" On Cruise Critic

WHAT ARE THEY?
Roll Calls were started for individual cruise lines so that our members could "meet up and chat with" others who they'lll be sailing with. This made it much easier to find others on your cruise instead of scrolling through all the threads here on the main Holland America Lines board.
HOW DO YOU FIND YOUR ROLL CALL?
There is a separate ROLL CALLS section on the main page of our BOARDS. Here is a link (http://boards.cruisecritic.com/forumdisplay.php?f=86) directly to the ROLL CALL area for Holland America. HAL Roll Calls (http://boards.cruisecritic.com/forumdisplay.php?f=86). Click here and then locate the ship on which you'll be cruising. You'll then have to scroll and search for your particular cruise. HAL's roll calls are very popular and you can usually find a roll call for sailings within four to six months of your cruise.
WHAT IF I CAN'T FIND A ROLL CALL FOR MY SAILING?
You can start one! In the thread title, be sure to include the name of your ship, your sail date and year. Some roll calls get started very early, others start closer to sailing dates; some are very active; some tend to be a bit more quiet. Regardless of how active a roll call is, this is a great opportunity to meet some folks sailing with you.
IF MY ROLL CALL IS SLOW, CAN I POST IT ON THE MAIN BOARD?
No. Please don't post threads looking for others cruising with you on the main boards. Roll calls became so popular that there was a need to set up a separate area for them. We ask that you keep roll call discussions to your roll call in the ROLL CALL area and keep the main board open for general Holland America cruise discussions.
If you need assistance with a roll call, please feel free to contact me or Host Joe and we'll be happy to help. hostwalt@cruisecritic.com or hostjoe@cruisecritic.com.

I do not really like to fly but I HATE TO DRIVE. DW knows that I probably am not going to drive over 5 hours in a day. 6 or 7 absolutely the max. Should we go to the western U.S. to visit a National Park we would definitely fly to nearest city and rent a vehicle to explore the area. Matter of fact about the only thing I dislike more than driveing is rideing.:D That is main reason I hope Houston will offer better cruises. However, I am not going to hold my breath. We will fly to Miami, Ft Lauderdale, New York, or other to enjoy our cruises. Of course if I HAD to drive in order to take a cruise, well now that is a different matter:p .

No, HAL, like Princess, does not do a CC meet and greet on their own. However, if someone from your roll call volunteers to organize one and gets in touch with Ship's Services (and then with the appropriate officers once on board), HAL will give you a space to hold one, and will provide coffee, tea, and cookies (and sometimes more).
If you want to organize one, you may want to peruse some recent, active roll calls, and you will likely get some hints as to how to proceed.

RCCL's is called "Meet & Greet" and Celebrity's is called "Celebrity Connections."
Carnival Corp., which owns Holland America and, indirectly, Princess, has chosen not to emulate the RCI programs but have been quite supportive of Cruise Critic members who arrange their own gatherings by providing space, hors d'ouvres, no host bars, etc.

Do you see the little triangle outlined in red, in the upper right hand corner of your post? You can click on that, and report what happened, stating the actual date of your departure. This notifies the moderators here that you wish to amend your post. They will change it for you. It might take a few hours before they have a chance to do so.

I know that I had posted to a roll-call for our cruise in December, but no longer see the thread listed! It seems to have disappeared! What's up with that?! And where did it go?!

This happened to me once also. In my case, it was because there had not been any activity in the thread for a while, and my display filters were set to only view threads that had new posts in the last X days. Try resetting your display filter to include older threads. Unfortunately, I have forgotten now to do that (sorry - senior moment), but I think if you poke around you'll find it. IIRC, the controls for it were at the bottom of the screen. Good luck - and enjoy your cruise!

I know there was a Roll call for the Eurodam Jan 17, 2009 other than the one started on Oct 10, 2008.
Where has it gone?
Thanks,

It's on page 2 of the E-dam roll-calls. It has three replies, but none in several months.
You could ask that it be combined with the newer thread.

Scroll to the bottom of the forum -- and on the left side you will see Display Options. Change the timeframe in the dropdown to show you more posts.

Hey, Walt...
I am a frequent cruiser and use the Roll Call for my own cruises and monitor those from other cruises before mine.
Is there any way to force some continuity to the thread titles? Some starter will omit the year, or the ship, or use the wrong date, or some funky date format.
If we could start all threads:
Ship Name, MM/DD/YY ...
... they'd be easier to find in a Search, and easier to identify in your Inbox when you receive notification.
Im just sayin'...

'My husband(age 52) mother(age 66),12-year old son and I(age 43) are on this cruise. It is our first Holland cruise, we have taken several MSC cruises in the past. My son loved the kid's club, does anyone have any experience with the kid's club on Holland? Is any one else taking children of comparative age? We have been to all of these port except Dominica and Half Moon Cay which both sound great. We are from Colorado and can't wait to get to the beach! We are sailing on the Maasdam on 2/13/09.
