I am on AOL and have to use Explorer to get to this board to post. I keep having the same popup message when I use this procedure. Anyone else having this problem? Suggestions for getting rid of thelm?

Can you describe the popup that you're getting? In particular, does it look like a web page or have any graphics inside it, or is it just plain text on a grey background with a single "OK" or "Cancel" button to click at the bottom of it to get rid of it?

I use aol and have no problem with pop ups at all. Have you tried going to aol help and typing in pop up blocker, this should show you how to get rid of them....jean

Also, try downloading the free version of Ad Aware from lavasoftusa.com

You may have numerous tracking cookies -which prompt many popups...

My Mom's PC (she's in her late 70's) was a mess til we cleaned it up and have her run a virus scan and ad aware weekly - we also had a firewall installed to protect her information from theft.

She says the perfomance is now 100% times better and she no longer recives annoying pop-ups.

Another thing - be aware of hi-jacked home pages - installing software such as Spy Sweeper not only keeps the the computer free unwanted programs, tracking cookies and other dangerous stuff, it prevents many viruses, such as "about:blank" from changing the home page & messing with your registry keys.

I've recently installed the Google toolbar which blocks pop ups.

I have AOL and just sign on, no problem. Also, on the lower right hand side of the lower tool bar there is "Blocking Pop-ups" - it gives you choices, and I have selected to block pop-ups. Haven't had a problem with that and I do not receive any.

Amen! On my old pc, I had pop ups and every other thing known to man. I then tried to move over to two different new pc's and each time I would stay up for about one day, and then get taken down with the SASS (sp?) virus ... it gives you a countdown clock and tells you Windows will reboot in 30 seconds.

I finally got on the phone with the people I paid over $200 for the privilege of consulting with for two years when I bought the pc. They quickly diagnosed the problem, talked me through a complete system recovery, and told me what to do to prevent this SASS virus from raising its ugly head again ... installing Norton BEFORE getting on the internet (i.e., don't use the free version that comes preloaded), and install AdWare software. He also told me that as soon as I am online, I should run Norton's Live Update to get latest virus definitions and then run a full system scan.

While all this work was a pain in the you-know-what (especially having to reinstall my DSL connection after the system recovery), I am now running trouble free (and fast as lightening). I can't believe the difference between this and my old pc.

Pop ups will slow you down, as will the fact that you'd be surprised at how many of these websites "ping" your computer and leave their cookies behind. I get at least two to three informational warnings from Norton everytime I am online now ... telling me that some site is trying to get into my computer.

Amazing!

The best free popup disablers are: Popup Stopper, Spybot Search & Destroy and Ad Aware. All can be found and downloaded using Google.

Glad you were able to get it fixed. It is frustrating, no doubt. What amazes me the most is the amount of garbage that ends up on my fully protected pc. I also run a content filtering program at home which prevents any type of porn & gambling pages or sites to be viewed or accessed. My son accesses websites for gamers and we had tons of online casino cookies til I started the filtering - now, he can still go to gamer sites, but at least we don't get all the cookies associated with those sites anymore.
