What are their short comings? It's hard to tell from the deck plans. I have booked 5134 and 5136. Should I try to upgrade if possible later? Our cruise isn't until 12/19/04. Thanks.

Generally, the verandah cabins on the Vista ships, including the Westerdam, are about the same size.

However the verandah cabins in the "indented" section of the ship, where your cabins are, have somewhat smaller verandahs.

They are the same width as the other verandahs, but the depth is 12 to 18 inches less. Also, most of those verandahs overlook the lifeboats, as you can see on the deck plan. That does not obstruct your sea view, but you are obstructed from looking directly down to the sea aside the hull.

Neither of these factor are biggies, in my opinion, but you should know. Becauses of these factors, the prices are a bit lower for these cabins, despite the cabins being more midships, which generally is considered a good thing. There is less movement the lower you are and the closer to midships.

It's my first cruise so I need all the help available on this board. Many of you are so generous to take time to help the novices. Janis

Ted C's reply on this thread really made me nervous. We are booked in cabin 5101 on Westerdam for a 12-day European cruise in June. This cabin is definitely one in the indented middle of the ship. Ted, do you or anyone know what the depth of the verandah is on the other cabins, not in the indented section? 12 to 18 inches is a lot, and my husband is a pretty big guy. I don't want to pay for a verandah that we basically can't use. The only other cruise we've done with a balcony was on Norwegian Sky, and that was fine in size. Thanks for the help while I still may have time to do something about it!

I don't know the exact measurements but I've never seen any HAL verandah that could not be used because it was too small. I am sure you will be able to use. it. IMO....there are some verandahs on some Carnvial ships and ships such as Crown Princess that really are Very, Very small.
