OK since we have our cabin assignment of 6063 on the Upper Verandah Deck I am wondering about picking up WiFi signals. We are right under cabin 7053 that is very close to the Neptune. I know that the Neptune is a hot spot and when ever we have had a cabin near the Neptune I have still had good reception in the cabin. Has anyone tried to pick up a signal on deck 6 under the Neptune? I never bring the laptop when we are on the Oosterdam because we always have our corner aft cabin which is no where near where we can get a signal. But since we will be mid ship I am thinking of bringing the lap top and do my "Live Reports":)

I still think the Crow's Nest is the best "hot spot" on the Oosterdam, but my opinion (and it's only that) is that the decking between your cabin and the hotspot would severely diminish if not totally block the signal.

This might be true although when we were in Grand Cayman and up in the Crow's Nest, I managed to pick up WiFi signals from all of the other ships that happened to be in port with us that day...Carnival and Royal Caribbean. A deck's difference on the same ship might not make it difficult at all to pick up a WiFi connection. Hard to say though.

The difference is that up in the crows nest you're picking up signals going through the air and glass from spots just like the crows nest on the other ships.
Radio waves don't travel all that well through the steel that makes up the interior deck of a ship.

I thought some of the cabins now have internet connections...was I mistaken? All of the cabins on Vista ships have dial-up ports, which usually perform at 40 kb/s or less.
Lisa, I too wouldn't expect you to be able pick up a signal from your cabin either, but sometimes strange things do happen and a signal will follow the ship a/c ductwork for a good distance.
I would encourage you to bring your laptop anyway, type up your reports off-line in Word wherever it's convenient, then take the laptop to a hotspot to paste them into email! :)

It's my understanding that all Vista cabins have Internet, but it's dial-up.
A few of the cabins near the Neptune Lounge can get wireless from the cabin, but that's just luck.

I saw people using their laptops on Promenade Deck outside the Explorations Cafe windows. They were happily sitting in the teak deck chairs with their laptops on Noordam.

OOooooo. How neat....sitting on the deck in a teak chair, gazing out at sea and typing away on your laptop.....ah, makes me smile:)

John, that is what I usually do anyway. I write up my report in word then paste it into a CC post as soon as I log on. What I like about doing it from my cabin and getting a signal there is that I can do it late at night when there are not as many people accessing the internet so it goes quicker and I can do it in the convience and comfort of my HAL robe:D
I am still planning on bringing it since I did not post on a daily basis when we were on our last cruise. I actually missed not doing my Laffnvegas LIVE Report:)

That's really most annoying when you're doing something that involves elaborate screens, so the first thing I do is change my home page to the very simple www.google.com (http://www.google.com) for the duration. That way I don't have to wait for my normal home page to load whether I'm using dial-up or wi-fi.

My favorite hotspot on the Vistas is the PG.

Pinnacle Grill is a hotspot? You go to Pinnacle Grill to use your laptop?

Yes, I do. It was great on the Oosterdam last month:). Since I generally start work early in the mornings, it allows me to have a private, quiet breakfast and also get some work done.

Now that is interesting but then again I think the whole atrium area from Main Deck on up is a hot spot so it would make sense that the Pinnacle Grill would be.
Actually in the long run this could save me money. When I had a signal in our cabin I would tend to sign on frequently there for using up a lot of minutes. It was nothing to go thru 2 $100 packages in a week. Maybe if I just spend my time writing in our cabin and only loggin on once a day I might save some money;)
