Does anyone know if there is public transportation fron Leith boatdock to Edinburgh or is it best to use one of the offered tours?

Short answer:
There is no need to pay the exorbitantly inflated price of a shorex to get into the centre of Edinburgh from Leith. Leith is actually a suburb, if not a part of Edinburgh. From there to the city cente is just about a 10min bus ride (IIRC).

Long answer: Some options are

1) Just go to this website and type in "Leith" in the 2nd box down where it says "Area" and you'll find several buses that run from the Ocean Terminal in Leith to various locations in t the centre of Edinburgh (assuming your ship is docking at the Ocean Terminal).
http://www.lothianbuses.co.uk/

2) Take a look at the Edinburgh Ocean Terminal website - it includes information about public transit from their to the city centre under the heading "Getting Here" on it's menu.
http://www.oceanterminal.com

3) The Majestic Hop On/Hop Off bus tour runs from the city centre to Leith
(This is also mentioned on both websites above)

4) Go to the Europe Forum of the Ports of Call Message Board and choose the "British Isles and Western Europe sub-forum. Use the "Search this Forum" tool or post your question there.
Several of the regular posters on that board live near Edinburgh and can give you all the detailed information you need.

Also, if you're interested, the decommissioned Royal Yacht Britannia is docked right at the Ocean Terminal in Leith. Definitely see it on your own; shorexes don't allow enough time and, when you go on your own, you can get there before the crowds.

Hope this convinces you!

BTW - don't always believe what you read on HAL itineraries. On one of our British Isles cruises on HAL, the itinerary said we'd dock at Leith, but we ended up tendering in at South Queensferry. There's lots of info on the British Isles and Western Europe board about how to get into Edinburgh from there as well.

Thanks for the info, sure will help. We try to avoid the shorex from the ship when possible. This is our first cruise around the British Isles.
