Smoking Areas on the Maasdam - May 19

Direct quote from the Daily:
"Please be advised that due to the inclement weather conditions, we have created an alternative smoking area by the Lido Bar counter and surrounding tables. We thank you for your cooperation and understanding."

Also the four /five tables on the deck outside the Lido, a few tables on the side of the aft pool deck, the bar by the Casino, the Casino except for one night that was smoke-free (and I saw very few people smoking in the Casino on most nights) plus a small portion of the Crow's Nest.

What kind of inclement weather?

Was it cold ... snowy ...

For one thing, they had temperatures as low as 39 degrees. That could be downright chilly for the smokers to be banished to outside on a moving ship to have their cigarette. Northern New England and Nova Scotia, Quebec had not very good weather last week.

Yes. At least cold.
Until the last few days it's been very cold on most of the Maasdam's itinerary.

Cold rain didn't phase me, either .... I just smoked real fast, and jumped back inside. :D

On the recent Noordam, there was a pax circulating a petition demanding that a smoking area be opened in the Casino. According to her, the policy was implemented by the Hot Man and his wifey, independent of HAL corporate. I recall reading something similar on this board. My take is that this is onboard folk lore and the Hot Man was the one charged with implementing the change, in corporate policy.

Most of the officers are smokers and were smoking in the Sportsbar and by the aft pool.

It seems that often when we like something, we don't mention it on our comment cards. Then HAL only hears from those who don't like the change. On our recent cruise we should have commented on how much we liked the more restricted smoking and that we would very much like a ban on all indoor and most outdoor smoking on HAL ships. I'm very disappointed to hear that concessions are made for smokers due to weather.
