Thank you for all the great advice! Still in panic mode about overpacking and wondering if there are other families on this cruise! Haven't read anything yet about other families going on this trip. HAL sounds wonderful....any tips or thoughts?

The Amsterdam has self service laundry rooms on most passenger decks so don't stress out trying to pack EVERYTHING. Plan to dress in layers for outdoors and DO take along rain gear, even if it's inexpensive ponchos.
If you're doing outdoor trips like whale watching and glaciers you will probably want a heavier jacket, maybe a stocking cap and gloves, warm socks and good walking shoes. You can always pick up an extra sweatshirt if you need it, either the ship's logowear or an Alaska souvenir shirt.
Take a power strip for extra outlets, camera-charging , cell phone, etc.
You didn't mention evening wear so I guess you have that under control.
Most people (me included) tend to over pack. I learned that I didn't need 6 pair of shoes and 4 purses.
If you ask more specific questions you'll get the answers you need.
Did you check for a roll call for your cruise? You'll probably find families there.

We are on this sailing too (my children are 15 & 12). I'm in the packing frenzy and trying to decide what to take. It looks like a rainy week in Alaska but we will have fun regardless. To save packing, I plan to throw in some laundry. Happy sailing.
