Horseshoe Bay or Elbow Beach?
I like Horseshoe a lot better. I won't go back to Elbow. But that is just me.

I agree with Charles. They are very similar. But as Charles has pointed out before, if Horseshoe gets too crowded you can just keep walking to the right and find plenty of free space. It is a public beach with great facilities. The problem with Elbow beach is that I am never sure if I am on the public side or have inadvertedly infringed on the private Elbow Beach Hotel side. Nothing was ever said to me, but I felt like I was an intruder when I got close to the Hotel and was being watched by the attendents. Just an intangible but still felt uncomfortable. I won't go back to Elbow Beach either. Given a choice though, I would just go to John Smith's Bay and avoid the crowds.:)

Here's a really important thing to remember about Bermuda beaches - all beaches are public. If you are on it - they can't chuck you off it. It's the access rights that is controlled by part of the Elbow Beach Hotel - the beach, is a public beach.
Personally, I'd go to Warwick Long Bay.

So what's the best way to get to John Smith's Bay and is there a Swizzle Inn near it?

Not all beaches in Bermuda are public. If you check the Bermuda map from Bermuda tourism, you will find the Public Beaches listed thereon. Those beaches shown on the map (pink areas) that are not on the list of public beaches are private beaches exclusively for hotel guests. If you check the Bermuda beaches on the Bermuda Tourism website, you willl find many beaches listed as private.

Last August we were told by a local shop owner that as long as we ate lunch at the Elbow Beach Hotel Restaurant ( I think it was called Charlies?) right on the beach, that we could use their beach and facilities- it was pricey but well worth it- we took a taxi from Front Street (had to make a stop to take photos of a private home belonging to a client along the way, long story), right to the Hotel, walked down to the private beach, parked our stuff on the hotel's lovely chaise lounge chairs, enjoyed a day on their private beach and lunch at their restaurant, we got a few looks, but nobody ever questioned us directly....worked out perfectly!
