View Full Version : Why the Goofy Prices When a Category is Closed?

This is something I've wondered about for a long time.
On the HAL website, when a category of cabin is closed (I'm assuming sold out) why do they put in those outlandish fares? Why not simply indicate that's it's closed, and possibly just omit the fare? Anyone know the answer?

Good question Roz, I've wondered the same thing. Perhaps they're saying, "the category is closed, but if you want to pay this ridiculous then we'll upgrade someone and find out an empty cabin".

:)
HAL's website is showing you the rack rate - the rate that nobody pays. If you look at a brochure, you will see 2 prices for cruises. One is the rack rate and the other is the discount price. And then there are other discounts that people get. I don't know of anyone who has paid the rack rate for a cruise in years.

:)KK,
Are you saying that HAL changes the prices from their discounted rate back to the rack rate when the category closes?

YES - guess they want people to think some fool paid that ridiculous rate.
Hoe many of us actually look at the prices in a brochure anymore since we all use the web?

I remember seeing that a while ago.
Forget which cruise exactly, but the prices made me jump out of my boots!
When I checked the availability for some specific cabins, they ALL said
'available' , but at really overblown fares.
I think cat E on Main deck was around $101,569!!
And this was just a 14 day Caribbean cruise!
What Seattle is up to, who knows.......
