Has anyone tried to rent a car in Warnemunde lately? I just called Hertz International and the response I got was that the office in Rostock no longer delivers to the port. Which office in Rostock is the correct one? Any other rental agencies that might deliver?

Hi Heinblod:
Thank you for your response and also for all the information you have provided on these sites. I contacted Hertz but they need the address for the Warnemunde Cruise Terminal. It wasn't sufficient to just give the name of the ship (NCL Dream) and ask for car delivery to the cruise terminal. I haven't had any luck finding the address for the terminal. Would you have that info, by chance?
Thanks,
Janet

Good Morning,
of course:
Am Passagierkai
18119 Rostock
is the postal address.
Depending to the day of travel you should check on
http://www.rostock-port.de/Anlaeufe_2007.75+B6Jkw9MXJvYm90cy50eHQ_.0.html
If your ship is on P7 add
P7 - Großes Hauptterminal - Festgebäude
If your ship is on P8 add
P8 - Kleines Nebenterminal - Zeltgebäude
So they should find it!

IF YOU STILL HAVE PROBLEMS: ASK THEM FOR A BOOKING CONFIRMATION. FORWARD IT TO ME:

I WILL FORWARD IT WITH SOME GERMAN COMMENT TO THE STATION IN ROSTOCK WHO WILL DELIVER.
SO EVERYTHING SHOULD BE CLEAR.

Heinbloed,
You are the most helpful Cruise Critic. I just sent you a message because Hertz is insisting that I speak directly with the local rental agency in Rostock. Thank you in advance.

Please let me know what happens with your Hertz reservation. I just spoke with Hertz International today and they were going to put the request through to Rostock. Hertz told me I would hear back from them in 3 days. I hope they can take care of it.

It's very easy:
I got from the other cruiser the booking details.
I will make now a small fax in German and ask them for confirmation of the booking incl. delivery in Warnemünde.
And if they do not reply: I will call them myself.
It's exactly the same when I am trying to order a car for a cruise terminal in the United States: An underpaid call-center-agent who has never been on a cruise or in the US must find out how it works in a place he have never been.
Therefore it's easier to call locally and talk in German.
I can offer you the same support.

I, too, am trying to rent a car with Hertz in Warnemunde and was told the same thing (they didn't have any info about it and would have to contact the office in Rostock). They told me that they would call me back in 2-3 days and I never heard from them. So I am anxious to see if you can resolve this with them, Heinblood and if so, perhaps I may also impose on you to help as well.... although it seems that we should be able to do this without having to trouble you!

@zelker:
Just write me an e-mail with your booking refno. + name on reservation + ship and date of your stay in Warnemünde...
Once I will call Denver with a cruise and need some one to call a car rental station to deliver a car to the Colorado River I will ask you to do the same favour.

HeinBloed,
If you can find a cruise that sails anywhere even remotely CLOSE to Colorado, I will be MORE THAN HAPPY to drive you there myself!! ;) (you are too funny!!)
We are not sailing until September so I have not made a reservation yet. Should I just make it for pick-up and drop-off at the Rostock location (St. Petersburger Str. 50) and then you will handle the rest?

Ooops... is Colorado not just round the corner of California with all the cruise ships... and are not there any river cruises with great comfort on the Colorado River???
Just book - do not waste the time to discuss with a Call Center Agent who has no idea where Warnemünde is:
Send me the booking information.
I tell them in German and it's gone!!!
No need to waste time for larger discussion.
Life could be so easy if they would use their own website:

I will check the matter generally on Monday. When they are reopen.

Unfortunately Colorado is about 1,000 miles from California and nowhere near to any body of water that a cruise ship or river boat can navigate. The only kind of boat you will see on the Colorado River (which, by the way, flows through many states on its way to the ocean) are small boats, kayaks, canoes, and rafts. ;)
I'll make a reservation next week and send you the information.
Thank you again for your offer to help!!
Barb
(and if you ever come to Colorado, I will be happy to offer any kind of assistance you might need)

Hi, HeinBloed. Still haven't made that car reservation because we are trying to decide what to do.
How hard would it be and how long would it "typically" take to drive from Warnermunde to visit the Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp in Oranienburgr? It would be on Wednesday, September 5th so during the work week. The train looks to take close to 3 hours, seems fairly costly, and I think we would also have to take a bus for part of the trip (maybe from train station to the Camp?) so not very straightforward. But then again, maybe I wasn't looking at the correct stops for the train so perhaps you could check on that or tell me what to input on the Bahn web site.
Thanks,
Zelker

Moin, moin (North German Greeting!).
It's easy: check the threads going to Berlin.
http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showpost.php?p=10355616&postcount=54
Oranienburg is a station just ahead of Berlin.
So the different time for Oranienburg i/o Berlin are:
10.51 hrs is the arrival time in Oranienburg.
17.06 hrs is the departure time in Oranienburg.
From Oranienburg it's 20 minutes walk to the former Concentration Camp.
11.19 hrs Bus 804 - transit time 7 minutes. But you have already walked there if you wait for the bus.
16.15 hrs Bus 804 back...
Bus-Ticket 1 EUR pp/way - GroupDayPass for 3-5 5.70 EUR
(804 is not included in Länderticket Brandenburg-Berlin)
If you dislike to stay all the time in Oranienburg you can easily return directly every 2 hours back to Rostock.
Or you go every 20 minutes to Berlin before you return.
What about a sightseeing loop by train if some time is left???
train goes every 20 minutes but you must take latest at
14.12 hrs from Oranienburg (S1 to Wannsee)
14.46 hrs at Bornholmer Straße
train goes every 8-12 minutes but you must take lates at
14.53 hrs from Bornholmer Straße (S8 to Zeuthen)
15.07 hrs at Ostkreuz
train goes every 4-6 minutes but you must take latest at
15.30 hrs from Ostkreuz (S7 but also S5, S75 to Potsdam, Spandau, Westkreuz)
15.58 hrs at Westkreuz
train goes every 4-6 minutes but you must take latest at
16.13 hrs from Westkreuz (S41 line clockwise Ring to Gesundbrunnen)
16.29 hrs at Gesundbrunnen
16.46 hrs from Berlin-Gesundbrunnen to Rostock
It's really a sightseeing tour. If you start a little earlier you can just stop for the next trains at
Alexanderplatz (TV Tower)
Hackescher Markt (Hackerscher Höfe)
Friedrichstraße (Friedrichstraße)
Hauptbahnhof (Reichstag, Chancellors's Office)
Tiergarten (Siegesäule / Victory Monument)
Zoologischer Garten (Gedächtniskirche / Memorial Church)
to make some photos at the platform of sights around the stations without leaving the station building.
You can interrupt at any time but must be at Berlin Hbf (Central Station) at 16.41 hrs for leaving to Rostock.
50.00 EUR per 2-5 persons + 15.60 EUR for an add-on-ticket (incl. option to use public transport in Berlin):
Return fare
Standard Fare (without option going to Berlin): 56.60 EUR if you are alone
= 40.60 EUR pp if you are 2
= 32.27 EUR pp if you are 3
= 28.10 EUR pp if you are 4
= 25.60 EUR pp if you are 5

Wow! Thanks for this great information. Perhaps we will consider doing the loop on the train as you suggest.
The other option of course is to just rent the car and drive. What is your opinion about that please?

Well - it's also an option:
You drive yourself to Oranienburg which is directly connected to the "Autobahn" (Interstate).
After your visit in Sachsenhausen you just drive to Oranienburg, leave your car there.
Make the loop to Berlin by train and can just enjoy some Berlin sights out of the train.
Check here:
http://www.s-bahn-berlin.de/pdf/s-bahn_netz_1506_2007.pdf
You start in the North
From Oranienburg (S1 - pink line - every 20 minutes)
towards Wannsee
to Bornholmer Straße
Bornholmer Straße is where East met West
Formerly on the East Berlin side no trains stopped and the wall was just in the center of the tracks.
From Bornholmer Straße (S8 - S85 - light green line - every 6-14 minutes)
towards Schöneweide - Grünau - Zeuthen
to Ostkreuz
From Ostkreuz (S5 - S7 - S75 - S9 - orange/light violette/dark violette - every 3-7 minutes)
towards Westkreuz - Spandau - Potsdam
to Westkreuz
This section is part of the historic "Stadtbahn" (all surface traffic) and the attractions you would see enroute:
http://www.s-bahn-berlin.de/englisch/sehenswuerdig/index.htm
From Westkreuz (S41 - dark brown - every 4-6 minutes)
towards Ring (clockwise) - Gesundbrunnen
to Gesundbrunnen
If you use S42 it's anti-clockwise and you are riding 3/4 of the circle i/o 1/4 of the circle.
From Gesundbrunnen (S1 - pink - every 20 minutes)
towards Oranienburg (only every 2nd train goes to Oranienburg!!!)
to Oranienburg.
From Gesundbrunnen there are also faster RE-trains to Oranienburg which goes non-stop.
A day pass for Berlin Zone ABC is 6.30 EUR pp.
A day pass for 3-5 persons for Berlin Zone ABC is 15.70 EUR.
So you have the advantage of getting fast and comfortable by your car to/from Oranienburg (you can drive max. speed on some parts of the Autobahn - so book a fast car...)...
and the advantage to have a short relaxed Berlin scenic tour without driving yourself.
But book a car with GPS:
Cruise Terminal
Rostock, Am Passagierkai
Oranienburg Station
Oranienburg, Stralsunder Straße/Krebelstraße
Concentration Camp Sachsenhausen
Oranienburg, Straße der Nationen 22
More information on this sight:

Hope you have a great time in Oranienburg and Berlin
