Deilmann does not include the price of onshore excursions. Are the shore excursions reasonably priced? Also, what is the smoking policy on Deilmann?

hcross888,

You can find the Deilmann shore tours on their website (go to the specific boat and then it´s the last link on the left side), as an example here are the shore tours of the MS Mozart

http://www.deilmann-************/fleet/mozart/excursions.htm

Smoking policy: No smoking in cabins and aisles and the dining room. Smoking is allowed in parts of the lounge and the lobby area and of course on all outer deck space. On the MS Mozart there were signs in the indoor smoking areas asking passengers who wants to smoke a cigar or pipe to do so on the outside deckspace.

What do you mean "OF COURSE"?

There are numerous lines that curtail smoking (or at the least, the very most malodorous—i.e Cigar and Pipe smoking) on deck.

Why should the vast majority of passengers, non-smokers, have to be subjected to that foul odor on deck? Even the vast majority of Germans are non-smokers.

Steamboats, thanks for the information.

Gilianrose, I understand how you feel about smoking. I also prefer not to be around smoke, but things are still different in Europe. I spend last summer in Switzerland where people smoke much more; nonsmoking areas do not exist in restaurants there. However, in the past couple years they have outlawed smoking on trains, which is a huge step.

Gillianrose,

No need picking on me! I´m a non smoker and I´ve never tried it over the 40 years of my life. And believe me, I´m one of those who are reacting more and more allergic to smoke. I do have a nice neighbor living under me who - after her husband stopped smoking - is now smoking on her terrace preferably at 6 am and 7 pm. Unfortunately the smoke is getting right into my condo and I have to close my windows because of her. But according to German laws I can´t forbid her smoking in her own home even if she´s bothering me.

Any outdoor places are still regarded as the areas where smoking is still accepted. And even many US cruise lines do allow smoking on all outer decks.

BTW we´ve cruised RCCL this spring and they even allow smoking in the cabins (and you´re not able to request a non-smoking cabin). The whole starboard area (where our cabin was located) was smoking area in the Centrum. Each time we wanted to go to the restaurant we had to cross this area.

One thing I like in the US is being not confronted with smoke. That´s why I´ve been totally surprised by the smoking policy of RCCL.

Laws (state laws) are on their way over here and you will find smoke free restaurants by the end of this year in Germany. The federal laws will ban smoking from all public buildings including train stations (trains are smoke free since a couple of months, train station still have designated smoking areas).

But anyway this it not a thread about smoking or non smoking. hcross888 did ask about Deilmann´s smoking policy and that´s what I´ve answered to.

I'm sorry you felt I was picking on you. It was the "OF COURSE" regarding smoking on deck that just got under my skin, as if the stench of smoke can't be perceived outside. As you have stated yourself, it certainly can.

I have enjoyed so many of your posts regarding river cruises and would love to meet you on a cruise one of these days and I'm sure we would have much to talk about. Although American, I have lived and studied in Germany and travelled all over Central and Western Europe, and I know that, like you, Europeans don't all "smoke like chimneys," which is a very common misperception voiced by so many Americans even to this day.
However, I'm curious, and I haven't Googled it yet, but does the German Chancellor Angela Merkel smoke? Germany (as a state, not as a nation of individuals) does not seem to be going the way of most other nations with regards to secondhand smoke protection for their citizens.

gillianrose,

I don´t think she´s smoking. At least I never saw her smoking. I know that Gerhard Schroeder did enjoy cigars.

As far as I remember the federal law will be effective by Sep 1st. But this is only valid for all federal organisations and offices (which includes train station, I´m not sure about airports). The states have to make laws regarding all state organisations and also restaurants, museums and a public areas.

I decided to Google this and found the following article:

http://www.dw-world.de/dw/article/0,2144,2114769,00.html

In the article, Chancellor Merkel is said to be an ex-smoker who used to smoke a pack a day. Now she is backing the ban on smoking in public buildings. it's a start.

Gillanrose,

At least the smoking issue with Deilmann is solved. See the other thread I´ve started. Deilmann is to ban smoking in 2008 in all inside areas. Outside areas are still smoking areas.

I'm going to request a Deilmann brochure and take a look at what will be offered after the smoking ban goes into effect. Thanks again for alerting us to the ban on smoking (indoors, at least) on Deilmann.
