What is the wave action like in eastern Caribbean (st. maarten and turtola) sailing out of Ft Lauderdale? Can the ship see alot of rolling action?

When are you going? what size ship? The bigger the ship the less roll. Stabilizers are really good now. The weather will play a big part hence my time of year question.

I have found that 99% of the time there is virtually no active motion to speak of in the eastern Caribbean EXCEPT in the unlikely event you cross paths with a major storm during the fall. Even that is highly unlikely because the cruise lines are careful to alter the itineraries if need be to keep the ships and passengers out of harms way. I've cruised the Caribbean since 1967 and never been in any really rough weather. Have fun! DFD1

We hit a storm in 1970 between Miami and Nassau-the dreaded Bermuda Triangle. As teens, we LOVED it! That ship was smaller than most today also.

I am looking at the Dec 19 cruise on the Oosterdam. Rocking doesn't bother me, but when I was in the Med with my daughter last summer, she had a problem 1 day heading west from Naples to Malta. My husband has NO sea legs whatsoever, so before I book the trip (or allow them to go) I thought I better check!

You will be sailing after hurricane season ( June -Nov) so will likely have no trouble. We did the western last Aug and had gorgeous weather and smooth sailing throughout. We'll be on the Westerdam in the eastern Dec 12. Can't wait!

It all depends on the weather, but the further south you go, the better your chances are of finding calmer waters. Sometimes a vigorous cold front can stir up a bit of wave action, but that is usually closer to home.

We have sailed out of Ft Lauderdale many, many times. And during every month of the year.

In spite of stabilizers, we have experienced a rolling of the ship as we turned south. In fact a couple of times we watched people run from the dining room. Within a few hours we were in calm waters.

I believe that would be due to crossing the Florida Straights.

You are right there, Sage.

If you had a motion problem in the Med I would plan on bringing some bonine. That tends to be like cruising in a pond in the summer months.

In the winter months the Atlantic can be a bit rough and cold. Once you leave the VI you are heading into the Atlantic. I would definitely use an anti motion med. if I were you.....jean

On our recent eastern caribbean cruise we had 15 foot swells and 50 mph winds the whole cruise. We have never had a problem with this on the western caribbean cruises we have taken.

This past winter was a little rough on Eastern cruise ships.

We have sailed other winters, but thought this to be a little rougher than normal.

I agree KK, we did BtoBs on the Maasdam in Dec, Eastern and Western and the Eastern was pretty rough at times....jean
